Just 'completed' Ground Zeroes, but died a lot and got a shit rating. Will try doing it again (along with the side missions) and try to get the S rating. For essentially an extended demo it's pretty good. That bomb stuff with the Paz chick was awful though.

Can't wait for this, these games never let down (apart for that weird hack and slash one with Raiden in it).

What's Ground Zero? I haven't played a MGS game since 3, which I absolutely loved.

No MGS2 was brilliant i was referring to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Ground Zeroes is a teaser to the Phantom Pain, you get to play a couple of missions.

Didn't warrant being classified as a separate game tbh it was over in a flash, wasn't even worth the orginal £25 when it first came out.

Is it a free download then?

It was free on PS Plus the other month and is free on Xbox now i believe but it'll be dirt cheap now I reckon, It's basicaly a taster for this new open world & approach-missions-as-you-please style gameplay MGSV is going for but theres some storyline there too that acts as a prologue for the new main game, definitley give it a go and you'll have a better Idea what The Phantom Pain is going to be like. Those people who played the missions once then put it down will feel like it was a bit of a cash grab, but there's replay value there too for the handful of missions you get if you're someone who like to try missions more than once to get a better rank, I got over 20 hours gameplay out of it so I felt it was £25 well spent.

The reviews I have read of The Phantom Pain say that you have more freedom in how you approach each mission / objective. In Ground Zero, you could go in loud, but your score afterwards was heavily penalized for doing so. In PP, you can score equally highly for an aggressive approach as you can for a stealthy one - which I like. I always try and be stealthy, but never liked the fact that if things did go loud, then you felt you had failed the game.

Will be hard to resist getting this, even though I actually didn't much like GZ and downright hated its gory, immature narrative. I was a big fan of MGS2 but haven't been able to get into any of the other ones. This is tempting.

Absolute the games, my favourite gaming series of all time. I've read there are far less cut scenes which was always a critique of the game although I personally liked them.

I've been watching a few clips, I can't see why its picked up 10 scores across the board. Looks like another generic pseudo-open world stealth game.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it a generic stealth game, when MGS basically defined the genre (maybe not invented it, but certainly popularized it).

Well, once you've played it you can judge for yourself, but until then wouldn't it be better to trust the judgement of people who had more experience with it then "a few clips"?

lol calm your nerd-rage, I'm a big MGS fan, just not yet been captivated by anything so far in this.

I'll probably still pick this up when I'm done with the Witcher 3...that's if I'm done with it before Fallout 4 is released.

So I've never played Metal gear solid before but I've heard it's a series with a lot of cinematic aspirations and a huge fan following. And I'm very wary of Video game 'critics' (read paid reviewers, IGN looking at you) Should I consider getting it? Because the last time I heard people raving about a military game was Call of Duty which I loathed.

What has frustrated me about MGS games in the past are their never-ending cut scenes - I want to get on with actually playing the game.

By the sounds of it, this game moves away from forcing you to sit and watch the exposition. It seems as though much is delivered to you through your earpiece - so you can hear that as you are exploring the landscapes and environments.

I watched this video yesterday - it shows one mission being approached in 3 different ways:

Really like this openness and the freedom to try different approaches to achieve the objective.

Unless it's misdirection there is a spolier in this, so be warned.

I absolutely LOVED MGS on PS1 but unfortunately the rest came out during my uni/post graduate years so didnt play them... I really wish I had as this looks damn good but I cant play the older ones as I only have PS4 :(

you don't really need to play them. It's a prequel to I, II and IV. III is the only really relevant one but even then I'm not sure how much you need to know. There are probably a few videos online with all you need to know anyway.

Snake Eater & Peace Walker knowledge will really flesh out The Phantom Pain for newbies of the series. I'd suggest looking up a summary of both games if you haven't played them.

to be fair i'd nearly go back and play Snake Eater before V. Probably the best of the series.

It would be a fecking massive spoiler if it is, but it wouldn't make sense considering what happened in Ground Zeroes. I'd say it's more of a metaphorical use of imagery. Shows Big Boss' downfall from hero to villain.

Just pre-ordered this. Was going to give it a miss for a bit but seeing all the great reviews, it was probably worth getting next week. Gameplay footage looks awesome and looks better than MGS4.

Metal Gear Solid is the ultimate "wouldn't make sense" game though, its bonkers. But on second viewing, yes I would agree that it's a metaphorical use that's been conveniently placed by a master troll to get tongues wagging.

I'm still confused by the events of MGS2 to be fair. MGS4 seemed relatively 'normal'. I think I followed along nicely.

I never finished MGS3, but I bloody loved it when I played it.

You aren't the only one.

Basically, Big Boss, Major Zero, Ocelot, Eva and others set out to do what The Boss wanted and to put her ideals into place.

It goes tits up

Just read a few more reviews of this...counting down the minutes now!!

Love these comments (pasted from several reviews):

"However, the main aspect that elongates The Phantom Pain’s lifespan is the sheer amount of ways to tackle the game; you’ll want to try out different tactics with each playthrough, testing new equipment and weapons, as well as opting between a more rambo-esque approach to missions or remaining stealthy throughout. Aside from that, the game is just so bloody enjoyable you’ll want to go back for more."

"The Fulton system also allows you to call on asset drops out in the field. Low on ammo? No problem, just request some fresh stock and it’ll be delivered to you after about 30 seconds. Enemy vehicle giving you a headache? No worries, put out a call for a rocket launcher---problem solved. To put it more succinctly, the Mother Base and Fulton work in tandem to ensure you are able to adapt to any given situation when the need calls for it, which allows for a wealth of freedom from a gameplay perspective; it’s one of The Phantom Pain’s biggest strengths, and ensures you will never tire of trying out different tactics."

"While the core mechanics remain largely unchanged from Ground Zeroes, the sense of tactical freedom afforded in The Phantom Pain’s vast game world is unprecedented for a Metal Gear Solid title. More than any other game, Kojima-san’s latest makes you feel like a battle hardened soldier who is capable to adapt to almost any situation; and, while stealth is obviously Snake’s calling card, there’s no real punishment for adopting other strategies if you see fit. Every option has its pros and cons, and you’ll get a kick out of trying them all. If you fancy crawling through the mud and surreptitiously capping foes in the head with a tranquilizer gun like a stealth maestro, then go for it. On the other hand, I got a great kick out of setting up shop outside an enemy outpost and sniping them from afar, allowing me to then raid the camp for essential Mother Base supplies (more on that later) unmolested."

"Here’s the really clever thing: while you’re trying to adapt to The Phantom Pain, working out which approach or weapon is best for tackling each situation, The Phantom Pain is busy adapting to you. Enemy bases, for example, have day and night shifts. Keep attacking at night, and you’ll find more troops guarding outside of daylight hours. Focus too heavily on headshots and your foes may start donning helmets. Rely on the shotgun or assault rifle, and body armour becomes the hot new style."

I can see this game taking up all of my PS4 time. I get tired of games like COD where you feel you are being pushed or funnelled through a level, never really having the opportunity to pause and influence the route. Being able to scout out the objective and then tailor your approach is exactly the kind of game I like. Also the opportunity to mix it up between the main missions and the secondary objectives that you find across the map keeps it fresh.

I also don't think I will ever get bored of using the Fulton!

I seem to remember the Colonel bloke telling me to stop playing the game and then Snake running around naked. For a 14 year old kid this proved to be a very confusing time.
