I'm not going to use her now, just another excuse to keep using D Dog.

 where is that from in the game? IDroid?

Geez. This is why we should be given the option to create multiple save files. If the game auto saves after a bug, you're fecked.
Basic stuff really, anyone whos played fallout/elderscrolls/dragon age

Save often, think I usually have a 20 odd save games in rotation!

Sucks not to have the option

Finally got this. What's people's thoughts on reflex mode? When I used it in Ground Zeroes, it felt like I was cheating a bit.

Well I've finally got going with this over the last couple of days, wow is all I can say, but I'm finding myself really engrossed in it trying to work out my best form of attack. So far I've only just got to the Mother Base after trying to get through the missions as stealthy as possible; watching the routes the enemies take, sneaking up, taking them out and then disposing of the bodies isn't half time consuming.

How is everyone else going about this? Should I be a little more gung-ho about it?

Ive used her on ep 29 and was fine thankfully. Think its time to upload a save to the cloud just in case. Can't imagine losing all that progress. The thought of it gives me willies.

I'm hooked, played all the games and never been as invested in a MGS game as this. I have some bugs they need to sort out, but I don't know if its the game or the computer. But just as I am about it play it updates!

I am now utterly convinced from the fan rumours that Eli is Liquid Snake, he has the British accent and the blonde hair and arrogance and Miller mentioned that one of the clones of Big Boss was let loose. Makes sense, also that fight with Ocelot seems a bit prescient for them working together in the original game. Poor Master Miller :(

I'm just ahead of you. If I were you, I'd do a few side ops when you can. Allows you to upgrade a bit quicker which aids you in the main missions. I'd only kill if I had no choice, personally. Well so far at least.

I'm thinking about turning it off soon. It was useful at first as I was getting used to the game but now everything seems a bit too easy, you can line up head shots perfectly and basically never worry about getting caught.

Absolutely loving this game. I've not finished it yet - I have clocked up around 85 hours and am at mission 10, I think - but it's already a contender for the best of the series for me. Mechanically it is, as one would expect, so it's going to depend on how the story pans out, but it's good so far.

As a huge fan of the series, one thing I would say hasn't been so apparent in this instalment is what I'd describe as Kojima-isms - those neat little off-the-wall touches such as having to change the controller port to defeat Psycho Mantis and when he does the telekinesis thing and makes your controller move in MGS. Messing with the projectors in the assembly room on the tanker, getting told off for shooting seagulls on The Big Shell, getting peed on from above by a guard and random sneezes after coming in from the rain in MGS2. Being able to shoot the bees' nest to have them sting enemies and Big Boss' dream sequence in MGS3. Johnny Sasaki (who appears in all installments, in some form or another) taking a dump inside a barrel and later crapping himself in MGS4. The mice getting the "!" alert in the vents. Vulcan Raven's huge shadow turning out to be a figurine in front of a lamp which fires ball-bearings when you touch it. The crazy CODEC dialogue. The flashbacks and throw backs when returning to Shadow Moses in MGS4. There are many more I could mention. This game so far is seemingly devoid of these silly little touches and moments and if the rest of the game is the same then that, for me, is a shame.

That aside, though, I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

I tend to play as stealthily as is possible and then go full Rambo if it goes to shit. Rather than watching the guards' patrol routes, use the magazine to make them investigate a dark corner and grab them there. Even if there's a group of them, most of the time only one will go to investigate, so it's quite simple to split them up. Use this method in conjunction with the gas mines (once you've developed them) and it's really good fun, imo. Also, you can be more gung-ho in side missions, as there's no rating system on those. I tend to use them to attempt speedier, riskier, stealth runs to hone my skills, but mostly it goes tits-up and I have to start shooting folk in the face.

Finished the Gunsmith side-ops - fully customized loadout now
I've just got this also. It's nice to finally be able to suppress the tranquilliser rifle and change the horrible optic. Being able to put guards to sleep from a distance definitely gives you more options in how you approach stealth op's.

It definitely makes things easier but I'm pretty sure you have to have no reflex moments to get an S rating for a mission, though....which, having attained the Big Boss rank on all previous games barring Peace Walker, is the ultimate challenge for me and is what will keep me playing after the main story is finished. Of course that won't be the case for everyone.

You can use the reflex and get an S rating. I've found that speed is the key to the higher ratings - I spent ages on one mission memorising the patrols, waiting the right moment but only got an A, despite not being seen. Then I infiltrated a prison unseen before a big shoutout, where I killed 5 people using the reflex on a couple before running out with the prisoner - S ranking...I don't really get it.

Is anyone planning on get an S rank on every mission? Seems a lot of work, but then again, it is a couple of months until Fallout.

Finally hit my first bogey mission; #16 where you had to recover a transport. I kept trying fancy ways of doing it with roadblocks and stealth and rocket launchers. Finally after a minimum of a dozen+ tries I just busted in like the Kool-Aid man and got the hell out.

Still got a 'B' somehow, which is respectable for me...

Yeah, speed has always been a factor for a top rating. Still being able to get one without getting the 'No Reflex' bonus is crazy, though. Meh, well I'm setting personal rules. An S with reflex doesn't count as a real S. :)

Aye, I will give it a shot. I've got a few already and I'm on mission 18 - not 10, as I said earlier. The rest are A & B with one or two C.

Got the soundtrack for this today and its bloody good, only listened to the first CD but some of it really does have the same sort of vibe as the Deus Ex Human Revolution soundtrack which was great.

"V Has Come To" will get countless plays from me.

Pfft, you're on your own with that one...I need all the help I can get.

Is that the one with...
The Skull Unit guarding the truck?

First attempt I also tried to roadblock unsuccessfully, crapped myself when The Skulls appeared, but managed to ninja-C4 the armour then Fultoned the truck and jumped in my jeep but they were jumping onto the bonnet and whooped my ass. Tried again, C4'd the armour then lured the Skulls away from the truck and then kept having Quiet attack. She had to keep bouncing between vantage points but killed two before she was injured and extracted. I then Leroy'd the other two with rockets. That worked.
Quiet is still in Sickbay. :(

Yeah it feels a bit backwards to be honest. My S ratings have come in missions where I have more or less just rushed in without a care in the world (within reason), quickly grabbed the objective and got out in under 10 minutes without doing any serious planning or side tasks. When I was in a more careful and strategic mood on the missions that I'd plan to a tee and execute almost flawlessly including the side tasks,I'd only get a B because I spent more than half an hour on it. Even though really the execution was much better by stealth standards. It seems to me that time should be a minimal factor in the mission score, more important should be how stealthily executed the mission was and how many side tasks/ interrogations/blueprints were achieved.

Yeah
, I just barreled into a post they were stopped at with my cargo truck without stopping until the cutscene. Hopped into the blue truck and zig-zagged off into the hills!

And this was after hours of trying a clever way...

Mission 35 can fcuk off. The thoughts of trying to S rank that gives me cold sweats.

Can't say Im liking how chapter 2 is being handled mission structure wise.

I did that one last night, first I tried to rocket launch the armoured truck & tank from a vantage point after setting up a roadblock, I blew up the armoured truck, which in turn blew up my target, Plan 2. Next up I tried the same but lay in the grass by the roadside to run in and fulton the target truck away leaving me to deal with the other two, stalked in to fulton the truck and then shit got real, I was stuck lying in the grass right up close to the Skulls unit after the cut scene so I slowly backed away and tried to take them out with my rocket launcher but it was nowhere near as effective as the honeybee and the cover where I planned my attack was sparse, after a few retries and much chaos, one of which included me getting in one of the tanks and blowing up the target truck in a state of complete confusion.

I finally decided it was best to just get in and out as clean as possible, so I did my roadblock, got rid of D-Dog & parachuted in D-Horse and left him in a getaway spot, crawled as close to the road as possible and when the convoy stopped dashed in, triggered the cut scene, made it to the truck and held triangle 1...2...3...4 GO! (as I did this all of the skulls were alerted) sprinted to D-Horse and bolted to the mission border having to dodge the Skulls all the way only to hear Kaz saying: "BOSS, YOU'RE LEAVING MISSION AREA AND THE TARGET BEHIND" what the feck??...oh....I was too concerned with carrying out the steps of my plan to notice I didnt fulton the truck out properly. So I had to ride all the way back, dodging the skulls all the way, get to the truck, fulton it back and ride all the way to the mission border again with the skulls in hot pursuit.

somehow I also got a B :D

Cheers @Mr Anderson & @Brocky. I've kept to the stealth and not killing so it encourages me to get a move on.

Although I did mission 3 in less than 12 minutes, managed to put most of the guards on route to sleep and was only seen briefly from a watch tower once and walked away with a B, seems a bit of a low rank. At least the side missions are unlocked, pretty simple to do and provide nice rewards.

44 hours and only at mission 22!!! Wow!!!! Such a good game!

I've been playing this game stealth the whole time but seeing now as free mode and side ops don't count towards an S rank I've decided I'm going to go loud to speed things up a bit

think im on about 30hrs and on mission 13, this game takes over your life.

I'm still sloppy as hell. C rating on each of the first 3 missions, and I was surprised I even done that well!

Non-lethal stealth is great for main missions and fultoning soldiers to boost your ranks, but it prevents you from using the vast majority of weapons you can research. For the side ops I prefer to mix it up a little, using explosives, lethal sniper rifles or even the odd shotgun ambush when convenient. It's a bit annoying all of this also decreases your heroism, but how else do you get to utilize your entire arsenal? It would be such a shame to put all the effort in developing stuff only to never use it.
