Right, I'm wondering whether to restart this. Reason being that
on the first mission, A Hero's Way, I killed that Spetsnatz commander and I've just realised I could have sedated him and fultoned him back to MB. Kaz mentioned him being skilled so I suspect he might have good attributes...

So if I replay a mission, will people I've killed appear on Mother base if I extract them instead?

Not sure - I think so. I seem to remember reading that someone found one of their specialists had been killed by a troublemaker and that they redid the mission where they had previously gotten him, and were able to get him again. Not 100% sure though.

Completed the first Africa missions yesterday - really good one!
Managed to fulton the child soldiers out as well before sneaking around the chemical plant. The extraction was easier than I expected - managed to get out without any difficulty. I chose not to take on the walkers, so just avoided them.

I then did the first Legendary Gunsmith mission - found that a tough one to do stealthily - although that was probably down to the fact it was late and I was rushing it! I alerted a couple of guards, then they took the gunsmith and he hid in a wooden cabin down by the water's edge. I managed to snipe him through the doorway with the tranq sniper, then took care of the rest of the guards. There were several A's and A+'s in amongst them that I could then extract. I love that once alerted, they tried to find a safe place for him based on where they happened to be. In so many other games, alerting them would have triggered them magically leaving the area and escaping, causing you to fail. I love that here you are able to continue and adapt to the situation.

On that subject, I think if there was an instant save game feature, then I would not enjoy it as much. It would be too easy / tempting to reload a saved game if you alerted the enemies. It's much better that the game allows you to continue through these and doesn't make it too difficult to escape. So many other stealth games address this by making your character woefully underpowered when it comes to confrontations, so that if you are discovered, then you pretty much have no chance.

Want to get the next to gunsmith missions completed to open the weapon customization - think that will be epic and give another few levels of freedom in ways to complete objectives. I also still need to find someone who speaks Afrikaans - can't interrogate anyone yet.

Not really sure if I need to spoiler this, but I'm erring on the side of caution.

Anytime you are landing for a mission, check around for a puppy. Otherwise you might miss one of your potential recruits like I did. I don't know what the cutoff point is but I didn't know until mission 7-8 and now I cannot find him even while replaying mission 5 which I think is where he should show up.

I got this puppy, not even being sure that it's going to be of any use

I am now sat at work considering tactics for the evening play. I will try going over to the kitchen in stealth mode for practice. Not sure hiding behind the walls in a workplace is the best idea but there you go.

You'll be fine. If anyone does see you, then just shoot them.

Being stealthy becomes so much easier once you have DD, probably won't ever use any other buddy now.

Done a few missions in Angola now, it might be just me but i prefer the Afghanistan setting and base designs better.

I fultoned him already luckily enough. I stumbled across him when doing the extract the Russian interpreter first side ops. He was around the landing zone directly to the left of the zone where the interpreter is.

Aye it was the same for me

EDIT: And @ArmandTamzarian you're so right

Ok, so this v short video is nothing special - just two headshots...but the feel of the combat and the weapons in this game is soo well done. My first shot hit his arm, and the resulting animation is perfect. Really makes it feel as though there is real weight behind every bullet, and that the enemies are not simply bullet sponges that require x number of hits before they die.

I read that some people choose to play without the reflex time enabled - but I really like it. Not only does it help reduce the risk that your patient stealth is undone just by being spotted once, but it is also incredibly satisfying to shoot them in the face!

You don't half feel like a twat when you twitch and miss your first shot though

Love going into reflex mode sometimes do it on purpose :D no idea why someone would want to switch it off, i guess it makes the game a bit harder and less margin for error.

Also has anyone figured out what it means when you complete a side op but after on the list it's shown as highlighted and has a white dot next to it?

Things to do while waiting for extraction

Flying headbutt your horse....

Or try flying headbutting a sheep several times...I was doing this & it got fed up with this weirdo chasing it around and butted me back.

Has anyone setup their FOB yet? I know @DatIrishFella has...

From what I have read, it sounds like an annoying mode:
  • Your base can be invaded while you are on a mission and although you don't have to go back, am assuming going back would reduce the chance of your things being taken.
  • Your FOB can be raided when you are offline and you can lose unprocessed materials. Granted, they can't take your processed stuff, but any containers that you fulton-ed back to MB can be lost.
  • You can lose your best people. Unless you put a direct contract on someone, then there is a chance they could be assigned into the security team and potentially lost.
  • Some people have said that they are stuck on the screen where it asks you to build your FOB - as in they can't progress or go back, so they have to build one. Not exactly optional...
Has anyone done any infiltrations / defended their base?

No not done one yet, it sounds fecking stupid they way they have done it though. You should be able go offline and not have to worry about getting your shit stolen or Personnel killed. Having missions interrupted would piss me off too, they should make it that only people doing free-roam or side ops can get invaded.

Am also wondering about this myself

As soon as I read about it thought I might give it a wide berth, bedsides there's micro transactions for this I believe?

Go offline?

I can't even stay online for more than a few minutes pfff

Totally agree - even then I would prefer to continue what I was doing. Also, if you are infiltrating a base, and the owner joins to defend their base, then everything gets reset - as in you start back at the beginning! So even if you have gone through the whole FOB, eliminated all the guards, and are one step away from completing it...as soon as the host enters, then you go back to the beginning.

You get your first FOB fro free, then you can buy up to 3 more.

Oh, and although you can lock members of your team, you can only do that to a small number - not everyone. So you probably will lose good people.

I suppose the big advantage of them is that they gather resources, or process resources 24/7, which is why they can be invaded 24/7...but in my opinion, in a game about levelling up and unlocking things through building resources, you shouldn't be in a situation where you can lose these without you knowing about it - or being able to try and prevent it.

I know people were complaining when they read about the microtransactions in this part of the game - and Konami reassured them that there wasn't a paywall and that it would be free to play.

I actually wish there was a paywall. That way if you wanted to, you could unlock this mode. While those who have no interest do not have to get involved.

That sounds incredibly annoying, I might start utilising a tactic of seeing how long roughly it takes to complete an invasion, then whenever I get invaded to just wait however long it might take for someone to make some decent progress then join in. You wanna interrupt me on a mission? well im gonna do my best to piss you off too. Psycological Warfare.

Is that what it is for? I thought it was to make sure your staff doesnt get automatically transferred to another team.

In all the time I've played this game, I've still yet to connect online once on Xbox. Good job then, that you don't online for single player in this or there would be a huge kickoff over it.

One thing that surprised me a little about this game was that, it wasn't that hard. I mean I died a few times in missions at the end, but on the whole, I found Peace Walker tougher. Still, awesome game though.

I think I've been playing this like an imbecile. Every other vid I see is tranq pistol and slo-mo combo. I barely use either. Might have to go back and redo some missions.

I completed the Honey Bee one last night and (from the drop point onwards) that seemed impossible to go completely stealth on at times.

On the flip side of FOB negatives, I saw this:

I was worried about FOB invasions before, but then I just built one and realized how much of a benefit it is to have one. You can have a ton more staff with an FOB, so that's a huge benefit. I have 150 max staff for each department, which is probably unreachable without an FOB constructed. And you'll only lose around 10 staff per invasion and there's a cooldown that locks you down from being invaded repeatedly anyway.

As you go through the game you progressively get better ranked soldiers, so it's not a big loss to lose a random selection of older ones. Oh, and being able to deploy 4 combat teams at once is a big benefit too.

I guess it just depends how they play out, but its still wrong that you should be forced into using it.

One thing I noticed is when you unlock the animal reserve if you go into the pens there are a load of medicinal plants you can collect. Will go back later to see if they respawn.

Yeah, the benefits are nice plus I've being invaded 6 times, have 4 victories 2 defeats, zero material and soldier loss and I haven't done anything. This all happened offline.

Ah ok - good to know.

Do you know if the MP is purely PvP, or would there be some PvNotP?

When will that unlock?

When will that unlock?

Not sure exactly when it unlocks but Ocelot will mention it. You access the Zoo from the map on your iDroid by pressing triangle (PS4) to visit it, call a chopper and when on the map where you select a landing platform press triangle to visit it
