When can he sign a contract with another club?

It used to be from January, didn't it?

He can agree a pre contract agreement with any team not in England, if we was to ign him it would have to be in the summer when his contract ends.

If we go for Ozil we'll need to re-balance our midfield. Matic although positionally sound barely has the legs to cover for Pogba.

City can use this kind of setup because of their possession dominant gameplans. Would be surprised to see Jose ever lineup with a midfield 3 featuring two defensive liabilities and one anchor

I think Ozil's age is against him now. We already have Matic and Sanchez approaching thirty we shouldn't build a team solely around aging players. If we do bring in another midfielder this summer I hope its someone under 26-27. Ideally someone in their early twenties that can be around for years.

Whilst I agree generally I'd be shocked if Ozil isn't still an excellent player into his early to mid 30s

Wouldn't go as far as 'shock'. Not unusual to see attackers whose games are based around mobility have a sharp or sudden decline in their early to mid30s. The Zlatans and Carricks are the ones I'd be shocked to see fall off a cliff

He'd be a great signing for us. We need to fill the squad with winners and make players fight to play in the first team. Id go for him in a heartbeat. Half of winning is mentality and just think of the boost it would give our squad. Signing players like him Ozil, Sanchez and Pogba takes us to a different level and also is good for future signings. It shows the intent to improve and win things which is half the battle when trying to sign established top level pros.

Get him signed!

But that isn’t what his game is based around?

Don't mix pace with mobility. Nearly every attacker uses mobility. Point being a decline in athleticism could screw up their mobility and their effectiveness

Was Zlatan’s game not based around mobility and athleticism (poor example because he’s a freak of nature), Totti, Giggs, there are probably more examples but my brain is blergh
It seems to be players who’s main trait is athleticism and pace who drop off, Ozil isn’t that.

There are diferent aspects of athleticism yet everyone keeps thinking it only relates to pace. Zlatan's brand of athleticsm wasn't solely pace or agility based. But yes there's no science to age decline. It's often as random as genetics. Impossible to predict who will be effective in their mid30s. It's not a prediction you (or i) would put your mortgage on.

Certainly not as simple as assuming every skill based player is dead cert to be effective in their 30s. Even a turtle like Mata is utilising whatever athleticism his body is capable of. At best we make an educated guess

I’m surprised to hear you would be surprised at that, since we have predominantly played with Pogba in a deep pair with a no.10 during his and Mourinho’s time here.

Maybe I should have worded it better. If we get Ozil, Pogba will continue his role as a deep midfielder. He won't play both in advanced positions even with Matic as an anchor. Was referring to the people posting formations with both players further up.

Even with Pogba playing deep, we've had our #10s contributing their fair share defensively. Mkhi didn't always work hard but he isn't exactly a shining example of what Jose wanted from that position. Admittedly I never paid enough attention to Ozil's workrate to tell if he would be any better

@Greck I don't know what your definition of mobility is. When you look at David Silva, it counter every point you made. His game was every inch built around mobility. Same can be said about Iniesta for while when he got in his early 30s.

I don't think we need him any more; I think Lingard has earned the chance to cement first choice "RW"/rotating 2nd-line forward with Sanchez & Martial.

I'd rather we signed a young winger with potential as support for Lingard.

Why do we still having debate about pogba role when we sign ozil? We are not facing the likes of Real Madrid, Barca or City every week.

Having ozil in the squad will surely add creativity and option in midfield which is very usefull to unlock teams that park the bus against us.

True. I've said it's not a science. Three years ago I would have guessed wrong on silva's decline. He was 31 only 2 months ago so maybe there still time for that shite prediction to redeem itself ;). He isn't exactly in his mid30s. Don't see enough of both players(ini and silva) these days to know how they measure up to when they were in their primes

I don't want him at Utd. He is an upgrade on Juan Mata but with similar weaknesses. I would rather focus on bolstering our centre midfield options. I also would like to see us move to a 4-3-3 system next season.

This makes sense but when he's available on a free it seems sensible to get him and the central midfielders together. Fellaini (100k) is likely leaving, so is Carrick (100k) and Zlatan (200k) most likely won't stay another year.

Assuming my bracketed wages are close to the mark that's £400k pw cleared off the wage bill. This allows for Ozil and 1 other CM before we even start add to what the wage bill is at currently.

I was pleased to see that even with the second string playing against Yeovil we still stuck with the 4-3-3, hopefully this means Jose wants to bed it in throughout the squad and do away with a #10, thus making Ozil redundant to what we are building.

Why exactly aren't we in for him at this very moment in time? imo we need him more than we needed Sanchez.

Pehaps, Sanchez wanted to move more and we couldn't afford to see him at the other side of town. Ozil is doing fine. Perhaps he's cool waiting for summer or the report is true that he's still at crossroad yet to be certain about one decision

Anyone else think we've already agreed personal terms with him? The reason its so quiet is because it would obviously be tapping up. Also, we've recently had a decent working relationship with Arsenal and having this leaked would piss Arsenal off to no end.

Show GIF when he gave a ball away and then went on his knees moaning and watching Swansea play and score.

Don't think he meant it either.

Anyway...I still don't want him. Well, I keep changing my mind, but I desperately want us to change to a 433, which means they'll be no point in signing Ozil.

Instead, we should sign a top class centre midfielder who shares a similar style to Modric, Thiago, etc.

People might switch their votes but no for me still, never. Not only because i dont want us to play formation with number 10 but check Swansea 1st goal, would lose my shit to see something similar in United shirt.

Why don't you go and grab that? I'll be glad discuss about it

Those few minutes were peak Ozil. Brilliant creativity and technique to get his team a goal followed by weak, stroppy play to cost them one.

Mesut, mate, if you sign a contract with this bunch, it's career over. He could have his pick of clubs in the summer if he's available on a free. He needs to get out of this shithole while he can.

He is a fool if he signs a contract with Arsenal. He is wasting his world class talent.

Not convinced he meant that.

He did alright. I mean do you see some of his passes? The thingie he does that makes the ball bounce. He's a genius in the wrong team.

Also, it would give us a different dimension from 4-3-3. We could have a lot of different options which nothing short of excellent for a club like United.

Ozil on a free is a no brainer.
