Can someone answer me this question. If Messi is a failure at Barca(compared to Ronaldo) because he hasn't led Barcalona to a CL win since 2015 does the same apply to the fact that it took Ronaldo 6 years to get to a CL final and win at Real Madrid?

Pep even introduced Messi to the super but individualised style of Rijkaard's Ronaldinho & Eto'o Barcelona before ditching it for possession football too. As you said Barcelona was most often at the top & stayed at the top.

Sure its not like Ronaldo joined Villareal either but I remember how Barcelona were a team almost untouchable, how he & managers like Jose were hired to attempt to take that giant of a club down & that's why I find myself personally idolising him more than Messi - the tests, the challenges and the results.

If others appreciate Messi - I totally get why. However I feel that Messi could have & should have stepped up a clear level of ease over C. Ronaldo's career due to his god given technical ability but ultimately he didn't & now we sit here talking about wondering who is better with a player who matched him (some may say better), for me; due to his legendary mental capabilities.

If Messi won every ballon D'or since 2009 he would be in a completely different stratosphere even to Pele and maradonna.

That's probably the last thing he needs to be honest & I'm sure he will win another one or two in the up and coming years as well.

Reports saying Messi rightfully wins ballon d’or.

ronaldo is crying that he only came in third when even him being third may be a stretch

Remember when people said you could put Ronaldo in any team in the world and he would be able to perform?

Oof

What they are saying about Ronaldo now goes completely against the narrative. But anyway Ronaldo is 35. He cant be in his prime forever.

I'm just having fun. I still think Ronaldo has a big UCL match left in him, but Sarri and this current squad don't seem to fit with what he wants to do.

Aye because Messi can sure do that hence why he hangs around at the same club all his life.

That's Loyalty

Better than bouncing around to the most celebrated team in other countries isn't it? It's not like Ronaldo went to Bournemouth, or Udinese, or BIlbao

Put Messi in City or Juventus and he'd do just fine

Yes keep dreaming whilst you day sleeping :) Messi plays the same standard he did all his life in the La Liga & yet the trophies have dropped post Iniesta & Xavi. Ronaldo scores the same amount in the La liga as Messi always has done because its a very poor league which acres and acres of space for attacking players. Ronaldo if he stuck about at Real Madrid like Messi sticks around at Barcelona - Ronaldo would still be doing what he always done because its just way too easy..

Only time Messi had to adapt to a team that he didn't grew up from the age of 13 and with growth hormone injections - he failed with Argentina except for Olympic medals. So I highly doubt why Messi would be doing wonders for Juventus (especially when he can't play with his partner Higuaín in a national team anyway), never mind teams like Bournemouth or Udinese

Would he still be good? For sure. But absolutely no way would he have the ease of playing for Barcelona and playing with the legendary Barcelona players and those la liga teams where he gets 59+ goals per season.

You were proven wrong time and time again about the "acres and acres" of space. Messi was the leading CL goal scorer last season and Ronaldo several years in a row before that.

Ronaldo is declining, it hurts for you to see it but it's true.

Enjoy seeing Messi continue to win ballon d'or's after xavi/iniesta as Ronaldo declines.

Messi in City or Liverpool or Juventus would be fine. He would score as many goals as Salah and Kane.

Bouncing around to a team in Italy that won the league EIGHT years in a row is nothing to write home about. Great "challenge" let me tell you

Jumping the gun a bit there. How reliable are those reports anyway?

VVD won player of the year at the most recent award festival when rumours were that Messi was going to win it. So I'm still waiting till Monday.

But Messi apparently had the photoshoot with the award and everything.

Still though - it hurts for you to point out that this is nothing but a theory and far from a proven truth

Messi definitely wouldn't put up the same numbers he does now playing for Juventus. You'd be speaking of his "decline" too if he was playing for the Old Lady.

It's a bit like saying that Giggs and Scholes were cowards for not transfering to Juventus or Inter to prove they could cut in Seria A. They were academy products, fans of their own club and played for the biggest club in britain and in the top 3-5 in the world. They had no real reason to want to out. Same with Messi. He's been with Barcalona since he was 14 and Barca and Real Madrid are the dream clubs for latin players. What possible club could Messi transfer to that would be a step up? He destroyed fergies united in 2 CL finals. He destroyed Bayern. Him and Barcalona have reguarly destroyed Real madrid in the CL and classsico's. He has more goals against the top PL clubs than the best PL strikers have.

He's the all time top scorer for Argentina, despite often playing as a Nr 10 who drops deep to dictate the build up play. 4 international silver medals is better than no medals at all. If Higuain hadn't botched his one vs one in the WC final, then Messi would be a world cup winner as well. Its all about fine margins isnt it? If a nothing player like Eder hadn't scored a worldie against France in the final, they most likely would have won feck all. With regards to Messi's growth hormone treatments, you seem to know feck all about hormone replacement therapy. His treatments that he has the same lvls of growth hormones that healthy people have. No more and no less. It's not doping.

Ronaldo Major Finals

2008 cl final: Good performance scored our only goal. fecked up his penalty in the shootout and what would have been scapegoated for losing the shootout if Terry hadn't slipped
2009: CL final. Barely saw the ball. Took ridicoulous potshots from a distance. Meanwhile the midget messi scored a lobbed header against Vidic, Ferdinand and VDS.
2014 CL Final: Mainly invisible. Bale bailed them out and Ronaldo scored a penalty in the 120 minute to take it to 1-4 and proceeded to celebrate like he won the final one his own.
2016 CL final: Invisible mainly. Scored the last goal in the pentaly shootout.
2017 CL Final: His best CL final performance. Scored a fine brace against juventus.
2018 CL final: Completely invisible. Karius gifted them 2 goals and Bale scored a worldie that is probably the best CL final of all time.
Euro Final: Went off injured early in the game. Then basicly tried to outdo to the coach on the touchline to make it all about him. Eder scored a worldie that bailed them out.

he would fare far better under Sarri than Ronaldo

He'd still be the best player in the field, can't say the same about Ronaldo.
You all ought to make up your mind, either Ronaldo is really phenomenally great and has spent 10 years neck and neck with Messi, or both players aren't phenomenal. Really simple.

2-0 up and Messi dives to try and get a pen but ref rightfully calls it and gives him a yellow.
I'm just here to stoke the flames

Does everyone at least agree Messi is better at this moment in time?! Dive aside he was fecking amazing.

Before the last month, Ronaldo more often than not was the best player on the pitch for Juve whenever he did play, scoring or not scoring.

Sure he's definitely been since the start of the season.

But it's what we have right now. We also had 2 great Ronaldo seasons before Messi started being world class consistently. Time shifts and twists and it's likely we'll see 2 Messi seasons where Ronaldo isn't on the same level as him anymore, regardless of when the latter decides to retire. It's just the way it is.

In my perfect world they would both play godlike until they retire, but I believe they'll both drop to mere world class humans before they go off and fade away into retirement.

The romancing (spelling?) and fantasizing and status these 2 guys have while they are still playing is just ridiculous, in a good way, and it'll become even greater one they are not playing anymore.

Winning the CL final (even without scoring a goal) isn’t a failure, you still get the trophy, (especially when you still end up being the top scorer/best player of tournament). Maradona didn’t score in 86 WC final match either, and has relatively quiet match (not his best game) No one call him failure in 86 WC because of that though, so it’s really strange argument.
However, losing the final is. It applies to everyone. Messi has loss 4 major final. His overall impact at CL knockout stage is also not quite up there to match with Ronaldo.

Mental strength is all about delivering when it matters. When your team is winning anyway, whether winning by 3-0 or 4-0 doesn’t really matter. You still win the match/trophy regardless. However when your team is losing, it matters.
This is a ridiculous argument. You're saying that because Real Madrid won, Ronaldo's average performances in those finals don't count? How biased are you? This whole discussion is to point out that Ronaldo is not perfect in big game situations and when evidence shows Ronaldo isn't a perfect 10/10, it doesn't count. Jesus christ.

Don't know why I bothered to engage with you. I'm out.

Perhaps to you they are neck and neck, but to me they are not as messi is just better by a considerable margin, I watch the games themselves, not just stats thank you

Bouncing to Juventus is more like running away from the la liga and so getting guaranteed league trophies. And he still had the gall to challenge messi to follow him to SerieA when he was already in Juventus

So we giving ronaldo a pass for only winning 2 league titles in 10 years or are we discounting the league all together as "big/decisive" moments

Or the fact that Ronaldo only won two league titles in Spain to Messi's 6 while they were together in Spain?

I'll seriously never understand how casually it's brushed under the rug that Messi dragged mediocre Barcelona sides to league titles in 2012/13, 2015/16, 2017/18 and 2018/19. His achievements in La Liga are unbelievably underappreciated.

Luiz Ronaldo 47 goals season for Barca was highest ever in a single season for Barcalona player.

Messi equalled that once and outscored that record 6 times. Assisting more as well.

We discount anything that's not in Ronaldo's favour, that's how we roll here. They even stopped talking about taxes here. Imagine that, and it was well known and repeated here that Ronaldo is far better when it comes to cheating the countries he is living in. Well, until they accused him of doing the same as Messi, then we stopped mentioning it on every page. On football forum.

Mediocre? I came in here for a laugh but thats a good one.

12/13 had most of the spain squad that won the euros. Plus sanchez and alves. What a baffling claim. That was a really strong if slightly aging squad.

15/16 was an msn year. The greatest attack of all time (tm)

17/18 was the season they spent over 100 million twice on players.

Maybe last year was a mediocre squad and only by their standards.

In short, messi is good enough to talk up without spouting nonsense.

As it stands right now Ronaldo isn’t even as good as Dybala
