Lovely moments - the first time I see Ronaldo so positive about Messi and their battle.

Yeh I think the fact that both are near to the end of their career, they would start to appreciate each other more. There's nothing else left for them to proof, you cant have more successful players than these two, and better rivalry in football history.

Yes and also the fact they do not play vs each other on a weekly basis made them a little bit more friendly.

Such a shame messi doesn't speak english (or me spanish) as it would be nice to hear him speak without a translation.

Throw every kind of goal together -- open play, set pieces, penalties -- and he has scored 177 since 2014, 19 more than Ronaldo in second place. Messi has added 32.6 goals worth of value on his 900 attempts, and Valencia's Dani Parejo earns a distant silver medal at 12.53. (In case you're wondering, Ronaldo has attempted more shots (1,005) than anyone else since 2014, but he has actually subtracted 3.07 goals with wayward finishing.)

I can get Messi being more efficient and deadlier than Ronaldo and Ronaldo being wasteful, but to this extent? Surely something doesn't quite add up. It's almost as though they are at two different ends of the spectrum here.

Ronaldo has gone tiring in phases where he gets up tons and tons of shots but can’t finish for jack squat. Doesn’t he isn’t one of the greatest scorers the game has ever seen but even right now he’s already the second worst FK taker in Serie A history and I remember there was a time in one of his final La Liga seasons where he had one of the worst conversion rates in all of Europe:

https://www.joe.co.uk/sport/cristia...ter-question-about-awful-la-liga-stats-147733

“The reigning Ballon d'Or holder has just one goal to his name in six league appearances and, unfortunately for Ronaldo, he has the worst conversion rate of all goalscorers in Europe's top five leagues”

And again, I’m not saying he is one of the worst finishers at all, just that he has had phases in his career where he has these dips where he can’t hit the broadside of a barn. But to his credit he had amazing CL campaigns and even in domestic would always turn it up out of an early slump as the season went on.

Literally any stat that says Messi is good gets spread around through social media like there’s no tomorrow regardless of how irrelevant it is.

Not only that, but any stat that criticizes a teammate of his gets the exact same treatment as the more scapegoats there are in his team, the less pressure he’s under.

The funny thing is that these stats’ sample sizes always manage to up themselves in their ridiculousness. Tell me again about Luis Suarez’s goal record in away games in the Champions League in the past 17 games or the ’field goal percentage’ in the top 5 leagues proving Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo are some of the worst finishers around... don’t think the previous 1000 times were enough.

Anyways, this will be a big season for both of them with perhaps their last international tournaments at the end of it. Will be interesting to see Ronaldo try to win his 6th Champions League title next to Dybala and Higuain this season while Messi will try to carry Argentina by himself to his first international trophy.

We already knew this kind of statistics about the conversion rate of Ronaldo per shot.
And as was already discussed this is probably mostly due to Ronaldo attempting more shots from far, from more attempts with the head (in average more prone to fail) and from the playstyle of the team (in tiki taka era generally the Barcelona players when they finished were already very close to goal).

When Ronaldo was at Real, his goal ratio per game was actually outstanding, above 1 per game. Even if he attempted more this absurd goal ratio, while not telling everything, shows how effective he ended up being.

I find it funny that Cristiano has twice as many goals in the knockout stages of the CL than all these "efficient" players. Do they mention who's efficient against who, at what stage of what competition, I'd be more interested in that stat. Get the hell out of here with useless stats,

Someone hasn't understood the logic behind the metric. This stat takes into account from here he takes the shot (and how likely he is to score from there) and also considers how he places the shot. So if he misses a chance from 10 meters it counts far, far more than one that he misses from 25. His conversion rate is still under-average.

That tape again. Damn, these Messi fanboys have infiltrated the whole world. They are like the Illuminati, Hydra or the League of Shadows (rewatched Batman Begins yesterday).

Also funny how stats were not as important as the "eye test" until they started favouring Messi.

Please note that as you said it counts goals more if they end up in the corners. So it has more to do with shooting technique than efficiency only.

Also notice what it says on headers:

"First up: There aren't many good header-ers out there! Among the top 15 players in xG from headers since 2014, a whooping zero have added any value to their attempts. If you think about it, that makes total sense.

For starters, it's a lot harder to control a ball out of the air with your head than it is to direct a ball on the ground with your foot. Headers are also pure opportunity. You don't get in better positions to head the ball; you meet the ball where it is. On top of that, think of how many headed attempts come from a player just shoving his noggin into a crowd of defenders and hoping to make contact with a cross. There's nothing wrong with that from a strategic perspective, but it's not the recipe for an efficient conversion profile."

So basically players with headers are negatively affected because they miss those holy corners placement. Score a lot of goals from headers in the middle of an area crowded with giants? Too bad should have made a foot tap in in that location to the top corner to really count,

Yes, tweeting is the activity of conspiracists. That's where the Iluminatti does all their business too I've heard. The horror!

I'll think more carefully next time I make such an outrageous claim as saying that people share information online.

Yeah, they are negatively affected because headers are no reliable way to score. That's just how it is and the reason top teams don't build their systems on crosses and headers anymore.

Anyway, even if your argument was actually valid, the difference between the two is so large that suggesting headers are the cause of that is utterly ridiculous. Look at Peyroteo, he knows this statistic is so clear and leabes only one conclusion that he doesn't even try arguing against it but prefers changing the topic to some conspiracy bullshit so that these facts don't get too much attention.

Messi gets a record breaking 6th golden shoe

Props to Ronaldo for the comments in regards to this award:

"I really love this award. It is the best award out there for me. The competition for the Golden Shoe also comes from other leagues. Others can pick you as the best player, but an attacker's job is to make goals"

it's his third in row as well, the first and only player to ever do that and obviously, his 50 goals record in 2011/12 season is still there. la liga has the most golden shoe winners btw, with Barca holding a record with 8 wins (Messi 6x) and then Madrid with 4 (Ronaldo 3x).

Don't know if already posted.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...ys-Lionel-Messi-easily-No-1-player-world.html

'Nobody comes close': Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy says Lionel Messi is easily the No 1 player in the world... and insists he is better than Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Mohamed Salah, Andres Iniesta and Sadio Mane put TOGETHER

Oh, Cristiano stans will get mad and start calling Ruud a fanboy. The majority of footballers, managers and fans consider Leo the best in the world. This is nothing new.

Didn't Ruud & CR7 not get on too well while together at United?

(Not that I disagree with him).

Yes they had a training ground bust up ultimately led to him being sold.

Well that might bias his opinion somewhat. I agree with him, though... Also, based on the last 12 months, this is probably the first time for more than a decade I'd say Ronaldo isn't guaranteed a spot in a full-strength World XI.

But according to Cristiano fans, he must be a Messi fanboy. Nevermind that Sir Alex, the Roo, Ferdy and Scholes all say the same thing. Are they jealous of Cristiano? Do they hate him?
I love Ronaldo, but he can't or should be compared with the Goat.

I honestly haven't heard many players or managers say that C. Ronaldo is the goat because it's kind of mental that if he wasn't competing with Messi he would probably have 9 or 10 ballon dors. One of the greatest definitely, but not the greatest imo. He's a far more technical player than someone like Gerd Muller though.

Since Ronaldo joined Juventus, he's managed to get the same number of free kicks past the wall (e.g. saved or gone out of play) as Messi has scored. Mental that he takes every single one when there are players with genuine quality from dead balls like Pjanic and Dybala there.

It's never really been that difficult to compare to be honest. It goes like this:

Career: Ronaldo >/= Messi (with a slight edge to Ronaldo for the Euros and CL).

Ability as a footballer: Messi >>>> Ronaldo. No contest anyone who has eyes and isn't biased can clearly see Messi is a much better player.

The problem with this thread is we have Ronaldo fans arguing about who had the better career and Messi fans arguing who is the better footballer. Remember better footballer doesn't mean better career.
