It's actually easy to understand why. These days goals pretty much decide how good you are for plenty of people. So any comparisons seem to come down to g+a.
Forget messi vs ronaldo. I just find this obsession with statistics alone completely ridiculous.
Not getting into this comparison, but being effective is more than simply scoring goals.
I know, that's why I rate Bendtner over Ronaldo because he is more effective for Denmark than Ronaldo is for Portugal.
Even without the goals, Messi would still be better than Ronaldo.

The smile Messi puts on my face when I watch him play is priceless for me. When he doesn't score I'm still in disbelief at what I'm watching and the way he goes about playing football.

The only reason that Messi can be compared to Ronaldo is because he does score lots of goals.
One thing that is indisputable is Messi has to work a lot harder for his goals. Ronaldo can play like shit, loiter around the area and eventually his team mates will do the work and he'll knock the ball over the line and he'll walk off happy. With the way Messi plays, deeper and far more involved in the overall game, he doesn't get that benefit.

It's not insulting at all. Ronaldo is one of the best players in the history of the game. Messi is better and has been better for the majority of their careers, but people in this thread somehow talk for Ronaldo like he was a bad version of Bebe.

If Messi would try and play like Ronaldo he wouldn't come close to being as effective. They have different strengths and they make the most of them.
I don't think it's an unfair comparison. Not at all. At the end of the day, football is about scoring more goals than your opponent and no one is better than Ronaldo at scoring them. It's not like he's a one trick pony either. Left foot, right foot, free kicks, penalties, headers, outside the box. Doesn't matter. He's a threat in every facet of football. By saying it's unfair to compare him with Messi is saying that Messi is godlike. Whilst he's in my, and many other people's, opinion the best there ever was that doesn't mean you shouldn't compare them.
I always see it as a great compliment to Ronaldo's game to be able to be so close to Messi's level. The guy is just a model athlete all around. Takes great care of himself, works extremely hard and is by all accounts a very nice person off the pitch. He's made football a lot more interesting for us. Before those two there were endless Maradona v Pele debates but the two didn't even play at the same time. Now we've got two players at the same time being talked about as the greatest ever. Hardly insulting.

The irony is that it's Ronaldo's goals that make the comparisons and debates even somewhat credible.
I don't think even Cal himself believes the crap he comes out with any more.
You're also entitled to yours, regardless how many people will laugh at you. It's always funny how you react when someone says something you don't like about Ronaldo, this need of yours to defend him is special and not in the good way.
I have no problem hearing people saying Messi is a better player, or vice versa. But fact is each has their own strength and both are equally productive, effective, successful and pretty much unrivaled for many years already. I will leave thoses "who is better" opinion to the fanboys and others.
