Messi in Miami

In the realm of football, Messi is a celestial force, a cosmic dancer weaving through the tapestry of the pitch with unparalleled grace. Each step he takes is akin to the delicate brushstrokes of a master painter, crafting a living, breathing masterpiece upon the canvas of the field. Much like a shooting star streaking across the night sky, Messi's talent illuminates the darkness, blinding those who dare to challenge him, yet captivating the hearts of those who bear witness to his ethereal magic.

His free kick was very good.

He is still quite comfortably in the top 2 or 3 players in the world in my opinion. It would have been epic to see him at Barca this season but it's brilliant how he has started in the US.

I hope he plays for at least another 3 years. We will never see his like again. There is no debate whatsoever. The greatest.

Jesus, leverkusen really does live rent free in your head, doesn't it?

@ForEverEleven

It's genuinely the only time I can remember something like that happening outside of friendlies or someone's farewell game and it was in a CL knockout tie no less. So I wonder why am I living so rent free inside your head that you had to make this post about Leverkusen living rent free inside my head and tag your friend?

Nah, don't pin that on me, I'm a regular in this thread. I didn't even remember that incident and if you can't remember any other it is probably because such things are so irrelevant that it barely survives a week in your short term memory when it's not about a club you are kind of obsessed with ;)

Okay, got it. Everyone, who has a better memory than you is obsessed.

If your memory is that good, why don't you remember Chiellini and Bonucci fighting over Messi's shirt in 2017? ;) That's not even ss long ago as the incident you quoted.

Maybe you should rather trust Google than your memory. There are lots of stories like that it seems.

It's hard to remember something I was never aware of.

Im surprised how bad the MLS is rather than Saudi from this. There was a time I really thought it was going to kick on but if anything it seems worse these days?

Worse compared to when?

I think their problem is too much expansion is causing too much parity. The top players are too spread out and it's harder for a team to be great. It would incentivize other teams to be great.

If they had 20 teams, the quality would increase.

The look of disbelief on some of the player's faces in these matches is funny to see. Messi looks like he's really enjoying himself too and laughing at said faces as if to say 'yes, I really am this good'.

Nah, its more like Peter Drury poetic commentary. Peter Drury is unequalled as a sportscaster. When I first heard him during the 2014 World Cup championship game between Germany and Argentina, I was nearly stunned by his impromptu eloquence. He makes statements on the spur of the moment that no script writer could prepare.

Assume sarcasm? He pre writes loads of stuff and is a bit of a melt while on mic. Lovely fella though.

Compared to maybe 5-6 years after Beckham went to Galaxy - I watched MLS a bit through those seasons and don't remember it being like this. Maybe it's just the same. At the same time I thought Saudi league would be much lower.

Drury couldn't lace Peter Brackley's boots!

I'd rather say it's hard to remember something irrelevant if it doesn't feed your confirmation bias and isn't useful to dish out a sidedig to a club you dislike ;)

Hi Peter, how are you?

It moves in cycles, it will probably stop expanding at 30 teams for now and then there will be a bigger focus on internal development pathways which will see slow long term gains.

The MLS:Next system along with the USL as a separate league in and of itself is giving loads of pathways now and the amount of investment means it will keep moving forward. There is loads of money behind football in the US and I think it will start becoming the prime landing spot in both North and South America over the next 10-20 years.

The 2026 World Cup will be another transformative moment for football in North America in the same way the 1994 World Cup was.

I wonder how far Messi can take the worst team in the league at his age even in the MLS. Gunning for the title would be quite ambitious but seeing him try is good fun.

He actually looks like he's having fun which is great to see.

That first goal is almost carbon copy to this one. Alba cut back to Messi. That near post finish. Just makes it look like it’s a tap in.

He's so far ahead of the League's quality it's like I'm watching one of those unbalanced FIFA 23 videos on Youtube  He's at his best with free kicks lately, again

enjoying this very much but somehow doubt its going to continue in this fashion once the league starts

If he had joined the best MlS team i could see it. But who knows old Alba, Biscuits and Messi might be enough.

Only 2 freekick goals away from matching becks. 6 to match Pelé.

At this point Messi is just a cheatcode. It's weird though. This kind of impact is actually what people expect to see when having one of the best players in football history playing for one of the worst teams in MLS. The fact that he truly delivers and actually carrying his team to a next level, makes him the true GOAT.

That's interesting to read - I'm not going to pretend I'm following it closely but if they can get their college system churning out talent a la NFL and NBA there's no reason the league won't eventually become a real powerhouse. I think the US really needs their team to have a bit of a run at the WC, that's when you start to see the momentum really ramp up.

A lot will depend on the two other U22 signings that are joining up with the squad in a week or so.

Facundo Farias, a talented 20 year old no.10 signed from Colon for 5m

And

Thomas Aviles, a very promising 19 year old CB signed from Racing Club for 6.3m

Those two, along with Diego Gomez, the other U22 midfield recruit, would make them a lot, lot better even without Messi, Alba and Busquets.

The problem right this present is that the defenders have zero passing ability to build up. They're hopelessly losing it in their own half.
