Messi at the World Cup - No Ronaldo comparisons!

That was my point.

People were looking for him (as they did Maradona in 86) and he wasn't anywhere close.

He's a fantastic player for sure but after years of being hailed as possibly the greatest ever - it was interesting to see how he stacked up to the 8os teams which which didn't really give Maradona much help.
Whats wrong with being below Maradonna anyway? People act like its a bad thing?
So if Argentina had won today by a Garay penalty he would be the GOAT?

messi won 4 mvp and scored four goals, he was very good tonight and against swizerland

i think he was the best player in a very shitty attacking team

Don't know what game you were watching but he was largely ineffectual tonight. Threatened early on, but went missing at times.

I couldn't care less what you think of Messi. He doesn't even know that I exist so why should i care what a man is typing behind his computer thinks about somebody he has never met?

I was replying to your childish comments if anything
You have 1.37k posts and you are still in the newbs?

i don't think he did either. One of the few awards which he has not deserved.

Yeah, I've usually defended the guy when people have said he's won too many awards and I think he's phenomenal, but he definitely wasn't the best player of this tournament.

hardly childish when they are accurate, I have met people in love who are less biased about someone.

I'm not bothered enough to read the 37 earlier pages of this thread.

Nevertheless, I just read something on another website, which I think is indeed worth to mention on this subject: Messi did not carry his team. He was a good part of his team, that's for sure. But they couldn't ride on him on a bad day. That's what's distinguishing him from the very best, even from the very best of his own country: Diego Maradona was the single and only reason why Argentina went on to two WC finals in 86 and 90, and he won one of those. And hadn't the Italians literally tried to kill him on the pitch in 82, he might have gone to a third.

Messi is a great player. But he needs his teammates to support him. Maradona was more like Michael Jordan: The kind of player who made his teammates work by his talent, will, and presence.

Sorry, if that was mentioned before.

we are not going to agree on this, so it's futile for me to explain why i think he played very well today

the fact is that he won the price and i think it's deserved

People actually say that...

Jealousy and hate comes with greatness, I remember Michael Jordan saying that. Messi and Ronaldo get this all the time.

That's rubbish.

Michael Jordan had great team mates for example. Nobody wins anything alone. I get being the star, or cut above the rest but since when was basketball and football a team game.

Jordan played with Scottie Pippen, one of the top 50 GOAT players and defenders. Dennis Rodman is an all time great and the GOAT rebounder ever. It's funny how MJ never won anything until Scottie Pippen came along. What happens is when players retire, we forget about all the bad and struggles and just make up positive stories to fit the narrative.
This will happen to Messi when he retires as well.

Yeah, we're not really going to go anywhere discussing this since most would agree he wasn't the best player of the tournament, he was fairly average tonight and he's capable of a lot more as a player.

Not major hate or anything, just some who don't feel he should've won all four of his WPOTY awards.

Don't start talking Basketball with me. You'll lose.

Im not disputing your point about him being the best at the tournament as I myself am still undecided on who was the best player but the man of the match awards are voted for by the fans so imo do not count for as much as they should. Even Ronaldo has one for the game vs Ghana. Imo fans will either vote for their favourite player or the player who scored the winning goal or who took part in a decisive moment. Performance over 90 mins is not really taken into consideration.

Oh i guess the 2010 one? I agree with that as well. Think Sneijder should have won but then again its an individual award, so i can see why he won it.

His team went to the final, he scored 4 goals, won man of the match 4 times, won the Golden Ball(even if he did not deserve it). By any standard he had a good tournament. Based on what he has done with his club he is already up there with the elite players all time. This tournament just added to his resume.

BTW, I was a member here already in the early 2000's, but now I have no idea what I have to do to become a full member. Is there any link with information on that? If not, that's fine. I'm a happy Newbee as well.
You only need two more 'likes' dude ;) I don't know who hands them out tbh! I believe if you build a rep for being a bit of an idiot, WUM, or bullshitter you will most likely remain in the newbs for a long time thus being my point to another newbie who was too clueless to figure that out.

If it was a fan vote, then it's just as worthless as All-Star-Votings in the NBA. Fan favorits no matter how good they are, are getting voted in. Pointless. Let's do it by Twitter then.

EDIT: Probably we ended up with a Kardashian or the Pope as the winner of the golden ball. How about that?

If you made it as a full member, the standard must be pretty low.

Childish insults and bullying seem to be the only thing you are good for.

Who would you have given it to.....Robben?
It really baffles me, why only strikers should get the Golden Ball? We have seen some absolutely fantastic defenders/defensive midfielders in this world cup, who constantly played great football without regularly taking their "20 minute breaks" in between....why on earth not one of them?

Yeah Sneijder had a great year but Messi was still the best player in the world and I felt he still deserved that one. It's only really this award I don't feel he should've gotten, which seems to have been given to him because of who he is.

I don't want to come across as critical of him since I think he's an incredible player and I do think he had a good tournament overall, but I just don't think he was overly special and he didn't play well in the sides two most important games. He's capable of so much more than what he produced, and I felt there were players more deserving of the accolade he got.

Fair enough....I can agree here:)

I don't want this to turn into this massive debate.

I just disagree with the notion of your post.
That's fine. But wouldn't you agree that Messi has no leader skills? For what ever reason? Maradona looks today like a total insane person, but in his day he was the total leader of his teams. That's the biggest part I'm missing from Messi. Talentwise they are in the same region, no doubt.

Messi didn't score in the knock out stages. Definitely the biggest disappointment of the World Cup. I was practically just waiting for him to light up the final with some brilliance but he was mostly quiet. Di Maria was Argentina's best player and he missed the last two games.

Really? I thought Di María was wank to be honest.

OK. Thanks for the info! Might it get me closer if I told you that I love Dublin? ;)

I don't know because everybody is different. I do agree that some people are better leaders than others and you can't really say without knowing the person and being around them.
Tim Duncan for example is one of the quietest most boring superstars in the history of sport and basketball but he is probably one of the best leaders ever so my point is looks and how you come across are not always accurate.
From what I have seen though Messi doesn't strike me as an vocal captain but then again if Argentina had won today, everything would be so different and he would be called a great leader. I think the media tend to favour those who are vocal like Keano rather than quiet players who don't show that much emotion

It depends what you call a 'leader'. What makes you think he has 'no leader skills?

I was also a little bit disappointed in Messi. I hoped to see some magic from him, too bad.
