Messi at the World Cup - No Ronaldo comparisons!

how the utter feck did he win the golden ball? was it decided by his dad or something? other than a few moments of magic Messi was pretty poor for Argentina all tournament, no way in hell is he the best player at it, not by a long long way.

Utter bollocks. History now being rewritten as it was the minute Germany defeated them in 2010.

It would have been he needs to take Stoke City to the Premier League title.

As said above, the goal posts keep changing when it comes to judging his greatness.

I agree. As you said, hypocrisy at it's best.

Sometimes it all comes down to people who like Messi and people who like Ronaldo which is ridiculous too.

That's not exactly true. Sure he wasnt the best in the tournament but he hasnt been poor.

other than the goals he scored he did very little, far too selfish as well, Argentina would have had so many more chances if he occasionally passed to his strike partner...

Four Man of The Match awards, four goals, four matches he pretty much carried Argentina through, and killed Belgium and Holland's game plans. Most chances created in the tournament and most dribbles too.

He may not have been as spectacular as he is for Barcelona, nor involved as much as say Robben or Muller, but he performed for Argentina and helped them through to the Final, something plenty of great Argentians have failed to do for 20 years.

Messi vs Pele and Maradona comparisons are pointless if you ask me. Different age, different kind of football, different opponents. What we can all agree on is all 3 were great players and Messi still is.

Even if Messi won the WC people who dont like him would find something else to point out to prove he's not as good as Maradona. They would say he was poor in the torunament or that he must win another WC.

I still think Messi has a chance of being in the top tier, but he needs to sort out these fitness issues.. me personally I'm satisfied by his campaign, truth be told, he surpassed my expectations. Football isn't all about the different ages etc, when you see a player, you see a player.. someone like Pele, incredible physical specimen... Diego, fantastic ability, vision and charisma.. these players would be brilliant even now.. if guys like Ozil, are main playmakers for a world cup winning side (no offence he was good today, but he's not Maradona).. or Klose as man up front, you think these guys would not take their chance to stamp their authority in the greatest games of the modern era.. of course they would.

Ability is timeless, so comparisons are not altogether futile.

bollocks, bollocks and more bollocks.

Most chances created in the tournament. But keep spinning.

I can't hear this 'Messi was not fit' crap anymore. Ffs, there's a WorldCup final at stake. If they let an unfit Messi play, it's their own fault.

Messi best player of this world cup? You got to be kidding, this must be one of the biggest jokes in sport history ever...... in his own team alone, there were at least 5-6 players (first and upmost Mascherano and Garay, but also Biglia, Zabaleta, Romero, Rojo. Demichelis), who would have deserved it more than him. Not even to mention the top-players of all the other teams.....Make no mistake, he's a great player, but when it comes to the national stage, he keeps on underperforming when it counts most and that must hurt like hell....

Well, not futile, but 100 people 100 opinions. :)

One more knee jerk post... So much wrong with it. Especially the bolded part.

Don't think anyone (as far as I can see) is using it as an excuse for Argentina, or for Messi.

Hopefully whatever it is that's stopping him from reaching his best will be fixed though.

Did anyone pick Argentina to win the tournament? Anyone? So now we are slamming Messi for not leading his team to the cup?

I'd respect their opinions, if they actually took time out to watch the greats of the past and not make lazy conclusions about how the modern game is king. If the current Brazillian side can get to the semis' you can't tell me.. that modern football is > the past. Football goes in waves, premiership is testament to that too.

His performance was always going to be poor in comparison to the expectation because the expectation was unrealistic. He shouldn't have won the golden ball but people stating he had a poor tournament in light of ridiculous expectations should perhaps speak a little more simply and critique his performance for his actual performance.

There's no need for people to speak more simply because I don't really think it's too difficult a concept to grasp. If someone said that Messi had a poor World Cup it's pretty clear that they're saying this relative to Messi's usual standard.

I don't think the standard expected was unrealistic at all. Messi has clearly played far better than this. Hoping the best player in the world will be the best player at the World Cup isn't unrealistic. No one was expecting him to play like Maradona in '86, but I think most did expect him to be better than the likes of Robben and James.

That's because the goal posts are arbitrary and the topic is subjective especially considering Messi has several years left in his career.

I think he had a decent tournament, but there were other players I enjoyed watching more. Personally I think he wasn't even the best performer in his team. Mascherano was consistently immense for them

Well, I didnt say modern game is a king, just that those comparisons are sometimes pointless.

I think he might have a similar career to Michael Owen (obviously much better) but in terms of peaking at a very young age. I hope not though because i love to watch amazing footballers play.

Also being below Maradonna is no insult:lol:
He will probably rank somewhere in the top 10 of GOAT footballers. How is that shameful or insult worthy?

as you can see he's already plotting his revenge for Russia 2018

Well, I've seen a lot of people using it as an excuse. Not necessarily on RedCafe, but on other forums for sure. (mainly Dutch)

As I said Messi had better club career. I brought it up cause you said Pele had a great club career too.

Pele did have a great club career, absolutely fantastic. Not playing in Europe is irrelevant as the Brazilian league was as good and his Santos team could beat the best Europe had to offer.

and Maradona?

Also wasn't one of the reasons he never played in Europe the fact that the Brazilian government declared him a national treasure? Pretty decent accolade that.

I'm sure some did - and it wouldn't have been an outrageous prediction either.

The fact is that Messi is the best player in the world. That's the standard - what would've been a very good tournament for most other players isn't quite that for him because he's a special, historically great player. It's not "slamming" as much as disappointment for most of us, I think.

For me messi is in the top three players ever to play the game with Maradona and Di Stefano with pele and cruyyf in the top 5. Winning today would not have made me think any more of him the same way losing has not made me think any less of him. He had a good tournament but I do not think he was as inspirational to the team as others have been at the world cup in the past. For me messi cemented himself among the best by his performances from 2008 to 2012 and he is still performing at an extremely high level, but just not as good as those years. There is no such thing as the best player of all time as it is too subjective. The best you can do is be considered among the best ever and he has done that.

We're going in circles. I said Messi had a better club career. I didnt say Pele didnt have a great one, or 'absolutely fantastic'.
Sure Brasilian game was maybe good but the fact Santos could beat European sides every once in a while doesnt mean Brasilian league was better than the best European ones.

They did get to the final after all!

Messi better than Garay in this world cup? Ha, ha, that's a good one, you surely don't like defenders, do you?
Go home, you're drunk. You numbered 6 or 7 Argentina players who were better than Messi. Biglia, Demichelis. Rojo, Romero.
As I said, go home you're drunk..
This WC thread has had its fare share of ridiculous posters and you're out there at the top.

Have you watched Di Stefano play, or Cruyff? Or Pele?

Argentina were very unlucky with Di Maria and Aguero as well because both struggled with injuries etc
