MERGED - The 2010/2011 ASHES tour thread...all Ashes related chat here please!

I've just never rated/liked Northy right from his WA days...that last century obviiously earned him a reprieve...but it's not one he deserves, imo.

This batting lineup is a mess, and the selectors need to show some balls.

That's the thing, though. This Australian team aren't as good as a #1 team, but they're still very good. They can't compare to the last team that blanked England 5-0, but no team will. That was a once in history team. You're going to be very disappointed if you watch cricket expecting Warne, McGrath, Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist and a Ponting in prime form to turn out every match. That's not even mentioning the other 5 players in the team who were also very good.

Both sides are rubbish compared to the last ashes, never mind the peak when the players you mentioned played. I have watched a bit and barring 2 very short periods, the hat-trick yesterday and the 4 wicket session today the standard of batting and bowling has been woeful.

I'd almost rather watch baseball.

Almost.

Selecting Doherty and Siddle wasn't showing balls?

No, in all seriousness I get what you mean. Hussey, although he's looking great today, has been a shambles for far too long and probably shouldn't have kept his spot for as long as he has. North is too hot and cold, and as I said above, Clarke is not fit and out of form. In hindsight he probably shouldn't have played this test. So those three I'd probably draw a question mark next to.

This is actually the best bit yet. Anderson bowling quite well in terms of beating the bat if being a bit wayward and (so far) an almost masterful Hussey innings.

Which probably means he will be out next over.

At least there should be loads of twists and turns I suppose.

Bad light...hehe.

That was the Hussey of old.

73 overs bowled today, Australia scored 195 runs. Really has been a war of attrition.

Class batting from Hussey, lucky to survive his first ball but since then not made a mistake, has pulled Swann to death at times probably the only time ive ever seen Swann struggle to that extent against a specific batsman especially a left hander who Swann loves to bowl at.

Pretty even day overall, England will be pleased to have taken 5 wickets on whats probably been the best day for batting so far and a pretty dead pitch to be honest, not the swing we saw yesterday and not the cloud cover either, well on top after the North wicket but the Hussey/Haddin partnership has bought the Aussies back into it, new ball now available crucial England make inroads.

Currently pissing down in Brisbane so probably end of play for the day.

Right im off to bed!

The teams have exactly 1 change each from the last Ashes. Finn's playing instead of Harmison/Flintoff(who missed a few tests due to injury and was a bit shit in the ones he played except at Lord's). Finn's definitely an improvement on Harmison.

Australia are playing with the same team barring Doherty over Hauritz, which again doesn't seem to be a bad thing.

None of the Aussie or English players have gone back. In fact, some of them have come on a lot -- Swann, Broad, Bell, Hilfenhaus, Watson, Katich.

Hussey was quite brilliant today. Great against Swann.

Good stuff from Hussey, really important that one of the middle order contributed with a big score.

With regards to Marcus North, didn't know he scored a century in his last test (was that in India?) but he has really been struggling the past year and he'll need to make a contribution in the second innings.

Anyone here rate Cameron White as a Test match player? I've seen a lot of him in T20's and ODI's, but does he have the right mentality to get big Test match scores? During the warm-up game where he got the century, the Aussie comentators spoke highly about him, so if North does not perform, could White replace him?

White had a chance with the test team and flopped badly. North should be dropped for a proper batsmen. As it is, we don't even use North's bowling, so we might as well bring in a superior batsmen. I'd put Phillip Hughes back in.

White's opportunity came as a specialist spinner, though. He did flop with the bat, but they picked him as a #7 for the first test on the India tour 2 years back.

The Aussie selectors aren't going to be looking to White as a batsman, I think, because he wasn't even in the squad of 17 announced earlier.

I imagine North will be replaced by Khawaja for the next match.

Key session tomorrow morning with the early start and the new ball, need wickets in that session to stop Australia from being able to build too useful a first innings lead

Best thing about this match is that every session's been balanced on a knife edge. Potentially just a few things could happen to turn the match in a side's favour.

They're two very even teams, think every game could be like this really

Don't suppose anyone has a decent stream? TMS is all well and good, but watching would be nice ...

I'll be able to watch some of this due to the 30 mins earlier start and it being the weekend...

I presume streams will be found in the usual places?

Edit: The usual places suggests a 1am start, surely it should be an 11.30pm start?

Yep, should be starting 11:30pm weather permitting.

Morning session will be important for England with the new ball and probable overcast conditions. Anderson bowled really well yesterday, I thought he might struggle in the Aussie conditions, but brilliant effort from him and hopefully he continues in the same form.

I wonder how he was explaining the rules to those Far Eastern gentlemen...

you have 2 sides; a team that's in and a team that's out.. two men in the team that's in go out and when one of the men who's in is out; the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out; the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in; the men who are out are trying to get him out; and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decided when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out; and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

That's the wonderful game of cricket

Yeh, Hussey got lucky with that one and there being two noises of both pads, as there certainly doesn't appear to have been an inside edge
