MERGED - The 2010/2011 ASHES tour thread...all Ashes related chat here please!

He's been using his feet against the spinners nearly all innings, you live by the sword..you die by the sword.

Stumped off a pie-chucker.

I think Norths actually a very underrated bowler, hes looked very threatening when hes bowled, especially compared to your front line spinner Doherty, if you didnt know which bowler was in the side specifically for that trait you'd have to say North looks the better, i thought he deserved his wicket tbh he had both batters in a bit of trouble on a few occasions, comes to something when a part timer looks your most likely wicket taker mind, Johnson still looks shite, honestly hes awful how is he in this ozzie team?

England got themselves back into the game, still very even though effectively 17-1 at the moment, need a solid last session and they should be in a pretty strong position by stumps.

Mitchlol was meant play the Brett Lee version 1.0 role in this side...Someone who bowls pretty quick, and would help to unsettle/soften up the batsmen, and the others would hit them with line and length(Lee, and McGrath etc etc)

But his complete lack of a cricketing brain, along with control has meant...he's been a liability instead(not just him mind you, not too many bowlers from either side will be coming out looking good at the end of this).

During the 2nd India v Australia test, they showed a ball tracking map of Johnson's deliveries. Literally, not a single ball he'd bowled was hitting the stumps. This was after he'd bowled like 15 overs.

Johnson just isn't good enough.

How is Stuart Clark theses days? And a fit Brett Lee would be welcome for the Aussies. He has retired from the 5 day game hasn't he?

Brett Lee can't string together 5 overs without getting injured these days, let alone 5 days..

It will take a huge cock up by one side or the other for this not to be a draw now.

Brilliant from Cook, batted the whole day pretty much a faultless effort, id say innings of the match given the circumstances ie being so far behind from ball 1 and knowing your team cant afford you to make a mistake and for the fact i dont remember a single chance hes offered throughout the innings, top batting from someone i think many had a few doubts over on this tour considering the way the ozzies had his number last time around although granted they had Mcgrath, Lee and co, this ozzie attack is pretty ordinary to be fair.

Looks like bad light will end the days play, unless an epic collapse only England could do this looks like a draw, unless Australia bring Warne and Magrath out of retirement for tomorrow.

I said before this series started i thought it would be a 1-1 draw, nothing ive seen so far has changed that view, i think both sides will find it hard to take 20 wickets on these pitches.

Last summer. I'm sure he'll come back as a guest at some point in time however. He'd be lucky to do an hour a day nowadays.

He's been commentating all bloody day every bloody day the ozzie tv (stream).

Today put the England first innings, and England bowling in perspective. The Ozzie attack is poor. Johnson needs to get back to club cricket for a year or two and just work on his basics. Their spinnner doesn't turn the ball. Ozzie may have a sronger batting line up then England, but England's bowling is stronger and it's the bowlers who win test matches. If England can come out tomorrow all guns blazing (they do have the batting to do that) and leave the Ozzies with 250+ from 50 overs, then I could see Swann still making things interesting.

Cook will enjoy batting in Oz. It's it England when the ball nips around on softer pitches where he struggles, but almost everwhere else the conditions suit him more.

Great batting from England.Has draw written all over it though barring a quick blaze of runs tommorow, pitch looks a bit too flat for a result I feel.Would prefer it if We hung in there and grinded down the aussie bowlers for most of the day considering it's back to back tests.

Well for me they need a cautious half an hour and then try and smash it all over the ground before lunch - anywhere around the 200 mark will be enough for me

Its all about how courageous you can be in top sport and although the easy draw is there for the taking if we get a bit brave and get the win they're fked imo for the whole series

As its the first test I'd try and hammer it the hour before lunch and get the 200 lead

We can definitely bowl them out for under 200 imo

Not on that docile pitch.

And Aussies, why doesn't Shaun Tate play test cricket? your bowling attack is a kin to Zimbabwe's. Awful.

Because he alternates between shit/injured/mentally unhinged. I am serious about the last point...He had a spell where he was exhausted, wanted to give the game up...etc etc.

Also he basically gave up playing 1st class cricket to make sure he was fit enough to play ODI + T20 matches.

Listened to a bit of TMS, up to lunch very early this morning on the way back from a night out, so I saw the early promise. As the pitch is so full of runs, we will need to bat to just before tea tomorrow I think.

I defer to BTV to do his magic thing...I'm sure this would be relatively simple to do, if only I knew how...:(

Yep, I agree with this.

Anywhere know where I can get highlights of yesterdays play?..Fell asleep rather early last night :(.

Would be much appreciated.

Shame that. On form, I think he's the best Aussie bowler around. But anyone who gives up 1st class cricket to make sure they're fit for T20 and what not...can't be right in the head.

When comparing the bowling attacks, I think Swann, Anderson and Broad would all get in the Aussie team. They seriously need to find some bowlers from somewhere.

Swann's fantastic and by far the best bowler in the England side. Whereas Anderson and Broad are okayish....they both need bowler friendly conditions. But yeah, still head and shoulders better than any Aussie bowler, although Johnson at his best is more devasting, but due to his action he's either brilliant or a pie chucker.

Great day for england, dont think cook had one dodgy moment, not that comes to mind anyway. Recorded the last 2 sessions and just watched them now. Think we'll bat on as long as poss.

Hopefully the Adelaide wicket is primed and this weather holds off...been a bit shite here last couple of days. All day today it's been cloudy, windy and threatening to rain.

What would a combined team look like? Something like this:

1. Strauss
2. Watson
3. Ponting
4. Clarke (if fit, otherwise Trott)
5. Pietersen
6. Bell/Hussey
7. Haddin
8. Broad
9. Swann
10. Siddle
11. Anderson

If we can leave them 250+ with 40-50 overs, then it might be worth a gamble. Even if it is unlikely we'd win, if we get some quick wickets it will knock some of the stuffing out of the ozzy. Kick them when their down.

I would not be leaving them 250 with 50 overs. They'd probably knock that off on this pitch.

Draw written all over from end of first session yesterday. Pitch too flat to force a result only if a team collapse.
