Memphis Depay (stays)

Memphis is exactly what we need, a cheap squad option who can do a job

(as striker, not on the wing)

He proved few years ago that he can't do the job here. Nothing has changed since then.

the manager? his position? he's experienced? he's one of Holland's all time top scorers?

look we're not going to get the perfect player with 5 days to go in the window

we were always going to be short in one or two positions after the summers business, this is one of them and he's a cheap option who can put the ball in the net

He was good for Holland even when he played for us and before that. He was also tried here as a striker in 352 from what I can remember and he was shite because he simply couldn't hold the ball up front in the Premierleague.

Regarding experience, he was nothing special for Barca, he actually had similar numbers for us in terms goals+assists and he was one of our worst players regulary.

I am all for signing more players, I agree we need numbers more than wait for quality at this point, but I think it would be another great disappoitment we won't be able to get rid off in a year or two, similar to Ronaldo.

He wasn't really good for Holland during his time here, and a few of his most promising matches came when he was played more central instead of wide.

He's a lot smaller than he was back then as well.

He seems like a bit of a tit but we won't get a better rotational option for that price and we're desperately short of numbers in attack. His versatility would be very valuable.

Much as I hate to say it but Depay is a massive improvement on any of the so called strikers we have at present.

We’re missing a physical top quality number 9 who can hold the ball up and run channels. Depay allows us to not play Elanga - he doesn’t solve the bigger issue which is that we need a top striker.
He can do that obviously.

Are you saying Depay can't hold up the ball or run the channels?

You are describing 2 of the main aspects of his game. Have you watched him since he left United?

what I meant by experience was he'll be joining us as an experienced pro as opposed to a youngster making his first move abroad

I know he wasn't pulling up trees for Barca

I'm not a massive Depay fan by any stretch

I just don't want our season derailed because we don't have a striker who can play ETH's preferred system

Yeah, I get you, I think the same, I would probably sign even someone like Vardy at this point, I think we are that desperate. But I don't think Depay is good enough to be a starter, and he probably won't perform anywhere near good enough if he is used as squad player, unlike someone like let's say Vardy.

In terms of other leagues I actually think he is good player, but IMO he is simply not made for the Premier league. I am not premier league fanboy, I just don't think he fits here for whatever the reason.

When has depay played as an out and out sole number 9 at a high level where he occupies centre backs? Not in a two where he roams deep with a free role. As the sole striker tasked with staying high. When?
When was the last time you watched him play? My guess is not recently.

I have watched him more than you have I'm sure, good addition.
He wasn't good enough and he won't be now, his international form is irrelevant and barca doesn't think he's up to it either.

I'm sure he'd be a decent bench option but nothing more if we have higher aspirations.

I’ve watched him for Holland. Answer the question. When has he played as a lone 9 that plays high up the pitch occupying centre backs?

That's the only place I have watched himpost United and I'm never really impressed but he did have a good goal scoring record for Lyon and apparently at Barca too. We do desperately need another central forward option if Martial is going to continue missing time. He's cheap, and he wants to come. I would still rather not give Barcelona anything but we gotta get some depth and this might be the cheapest available option.

I’m not against signing him. I like Memphis. We absolutely need a starting number 9 though and he isn’t it.

If he can be had for a low fee and will accept a 2+1 contract I think it's worth it.

It improves 2 positions when Martial is out, because you get Rashford off CF and on the wing, replacing Elanga.

He's not the long term solution but that kind of player is going to cost double this late into the window.

Surely has to be a better option than Rashford as a 9.
that’s what i’m saying

people talk like we’ve got solskjaer and sheringham on the bench ffs. we could sign numberous strikers able to offer more than rashford up top right now
