Memphis Depay | PSV confirm deal with Man Utd is agreed!

I guess he'll leave regardless of us signing Depay. He isn't anywhere near a van Gaal type of player.

Which is a shame. Nani scored 10 goals in 36 appearances this year. Having him on the right, Depay on the left and Rooney upfront would allow us to play a solid 4-3-3 system without denting our fire power. I'd say bring a tough DM in midfield, a right back and a leader in defense and we'll be back in business.

Darmian----Smalling---Hummels-----Blind

Nani---------------------------------Depay

Against tougher sides we may consider play Carrick or Fellaini instead of ADM and Valencia instead of Nani

I signed Depay in fifa 13, he later went on to become the best player in the game. Just saying

Yes it's true he's been in Manchester for talks. However, he's visiting all 3 clubs to talk. Manchester United, PSG and Liverpool are all willing to pay the transfer fee and his wages, so now he's visiting all 3 clubs to talk. He was in Paris wednesday, Manchester yesterday. I imagine Liverpool today then. At the moment no other clubs are concrete.

I thought PSG sent reps to him in Holland.

I'm sure all clubs send reps to Holland, all 3 clubs already showed their intentions as far as wages and transfer fee before he went to visit all clubs. VI, the same reliable source that first reported he visited us yesterday reported a day earlier that he visited PSG. And now today Rik Elfrink is reporting he's visiting all 3 clubs. I guess his sponsor Under Armour is providing the jet.

How about this one ;)

I'm biased (obviously) but I've watched his games ever since they've been broadcasted, so this includes youth matches. This must be around 4 years now.

Memphis Depay (call him Memphis) - 21 - right footed - 176CM - left winger (hasn't played anywhere else - no he's not suitable to play as a striker)

Memphis grew up having a tough youth. His father was never there for him (that's why he doesn't like 'Depay') and he was closer with his mother and grandfather, the latter has passed away. He grew up hanging out on the streets, doing petty crimes, skipping school and all that. When he got his first pro-contract at PSV he tattoo'd 'succesfull' on the inside of his lower lip. He seemed to care more about money and fame than football. He had personal problems.

He got over his mentality issues. This started back when van Gaal brought him to the national team when he was 19 and only just became a regular starter. This meant alot to him since van Gaal could've chosen many different wingers, after he was called up he seemed much more focussed. He didn't show off money anymore, cut connections with bad influences, he hired professionals for his personal life and had an enormous drive to become better. He got over all his problems in no time. He called van Gaal an important man in his life, but his overcoming of problems won't be all down to van Gaal mind - I'm sure he had a hand in it though.

Van Gaal likes to work with young players, he also has his 'totale mens principe'. He cares about his player and his office door is open 24/7 for a talk which doesn't have to be related to football. He wants his players to be happy, he thinks they'll perform better this way. Hugo Borst says van Gaal is like a father figure to him. I'm not sure if this is true because I don't rate Borst that highly, but it could be, especially since Memphis has no father in his life anymore since his grandfather passed away.

He's now got the perfect drive. He knows he has talent and wants to work to reach the top. He's the first to enter the club and the last to leave, he could've went to Tottenham last season but he didn't. He stayed for his own good (he never played a full season before the worldcup, this is his first) and because he wanted to become champion first - he's delivered. He has a very specific plan what he's still got to improve on and is very clearly doing so, he's a perfectionist.

At a very young age he already had the perfect body. He's very strong and rarely gets pushed off the ball. This is great for a 21 year old winger. He's an explosive player: he's got great acceleration but isn't a speedster like Bale over a long distance. Not slow by any margins though, his father was Ghanaian after all...

In the last 1,5 years he's improving his overal game at a stunning rate. In the beginning he always did a Robben - cut inside and shoot. He's got a fantastic shot with his right - his main asset. He can strike a ball very hard and can score from any distance, not joking. Has a great freekick too: he strikes the ball hard and can curve it. He does use his left foot more often (he was very 1 footed at first) but it isn't great yet.

He's becoming a real team player now, he's completely changed his style of play. He's very direct, whatever is needed to score a goal he will try to do. He can use tricks to get past a few defenders and shoot, he can cross/pass or go for a combination with his teammates. He tries to seek the best solution in every scenario and doesn't go for his own glory anymore. This is the thing he needs to work on the most (decision making) but at the same time it's the thing he's improved the most already in the last 2 years.

If he thinks he can beat what's in front of him he will try to do so. He usually goes for it with 1 defender in front of him, when there's more he usually seeks a better solution. I find his new direct style of play hard to compare with any other player, the one that comes closest is Ronaldo.

He learned to score headers this season, he never scored those before. His crosses with his left generally come in the right area but aren't great. He has an eye for a tap-in too and already has the nasty habit to score when he hasn't been playing well.

His weakest points are his decision making (and execution) and backtracking. They aren't subpar though. He doesn't need to defend as much at PSV so I can't really say much about it, he's done it very well vs Spain and Zenit though. His final ball (when he isn't going for goal himself) can be dissapointing, but he's spotting his teammates. He still needs to work on this, spotting them is 1, but making sure the ball reaches his teammates is 2. If he can improve this he will be an all-rounded winger who can do everything. This is the final step (and probably the biggest one) he needs to take. If his overall contribution keeps improving like it has in the last 2 years, in 4 years time he'll be worldclass (no bias).

If you followed him he is so blatantly obvious ironing out all the weak parts of his game. Therefore I think he really is a special talent. He's got everything you look for: great shot, physicality, mentality, flair, speed, hard working and a real team player.

I'm sure van Gaal is the right man to improve Memphis, he loves bringing trough young players. He probably won't be great from the start, he's only 21. But I really do believe he is a special talent, and he really is the biggest talent Holland has got at the moment (in attack). I think he will be perfect to take over Young's spot in time.

Where his peak lies? You never know, I personally believe (bias) that he can become the next Hazard/Ronaldo. At worst he'll be an Everton-level kind of player though, I can't see him dipping below that.

Thanks mate - this summary is much appreciated!

However some concerns remain:

-) Can only play left winger --> What about AdM? I would see him as well on this position in the long run. I hoped Depay could play as second choice striker as well.
-) Backtracking --> In the PL there is no place for players not willing to defend/track back as well.
-) The playing style in the PL is faster so that wingers should be able to make running crosses with their left foot if played on the left wing. Cutting inside is nice but he will have less time to execute his actions than he has in the Eredivisie.
-) Based on the WC and the snippets I have seen him playing for PSV he tries quite often to beat the defenders using some of his tricks and fails too often for my taste. However, I think LvG will tell him if he has the same opinion.

Only an idiot (like Lucas Moura for example) would choose PSG over Manchester United, especially when we're on the rise again and CL football is pretty much guaranteed.

It means the end for nobody. Any player can work there way back into the team if they perform.

Nani may want to leave himself, but by all accounts early in the season LVG wanted him back, so maybe he will give him a proper chance in the 4-3-3.

Lingard isn't good enough anyway, he will be a lower prem/champ level.

This will be concluded in the next couple of weeks I imagine. I don't understand why PSG want him though, they have Lavezzi and Moura, both expensive signings who play in the same position although I imagine they'll be looking to offload Lavezzi in the Summer which may be an explanation. Living in Paris would certainly be a big pull to Depay, however playing for a bigger club in a better league under a manager he knows well should be tempting too. He could be here for a decade if it works out and being a part of Man Utd history has a pulling power. That and van Gaal.

He's basically a United player now. Might as well close the thread. Gone are the days when we stumbled over signing the likes of Lucas, Sneijder, De Rossi. We can sign whoever we want after the summer we had (bear in mind we had no CL back then).

The only problem is that he's not very good.

Ozil's been the best player in the league since Xmas, if you're looking for 'paid way over the odds' I'd stop closer to home with Di Maria. Welbeck cost less than Falcao's loan fee, guess who did better out of those transactions?

Definitely the Ozil comment.

Suggesting that he's been the best player since Christmas is blind lunacy.

How many 90-min Arsenal games have you seen since Xmas?

'A handful' ie you're talking out of your arse!

How many 90-min PSV games have you watched since ever?

Well if anything this season confirms what's been said about van Gaal - he doesn't really care about the name, the fee or reputation, he only cares about what you can contribute to the team (aside from the odd moment when he inexplicably decides you're not worth it, like he did with Herrera for 3 months before he put him back into team). Ashley Young, possibly the most hated player on here last season, has kept £59m Di Maria out of the team.

I bet he hasn't seen Depay more than three times, mostly at the World Cup where he was basically a debutant in his national team. I cannot see how a player who's scored nearly 30 goals in a season playing on the wing can be compared with Chadli.

Which is great and how it should be realistically. Nani on top form is still a great option for any team IMO, but his head needs to be right.

Yes, living in Paris is the only thing PSG can offer than we can't, but surely for an ambitious footballer the choice between PSG and Manchester United should be a no-brainer. We aren't in the Moyes era anymore.

He's had a great season with Sporting from what I have heard, maybe he will be given opportunity during pre-season. His style makes him a bad fit for van Gaal's philosophy though.

I raise you:

What a fecking beauty

Then again footballers aren't doctors of architecture so I doubt they care that much. The difference is visible to everyone though, you can be completely immune to architecture and style and still notice how cities like Paris, London or to an extent Barcelona are a distance ahead of most other European cities.

Well you say that but I always thought Nani was really good in possession of the ball. I am sure with a bit of coaching he could learn to play that way properly. I guess we won't have long to find out!

Lavezzi has one year left on his contract, he's likely out. Lucas has mostly been playing on the right wing this season, with Cavani sometimes on the left wing. And then there's speculation of Zlatan leaving. But I think having Depay and Lucas on their wings makes sense. In my opinion having to play Cavani and Zlatan at the same time has been hurting them, at least against the big teams in the CL.

Ha more players chose other clubs over us from Chelsea to PSG when Fergie was in charge!

Well, Manchester also have areas around it where you can lead a good and comfortable life in a good environment. It's nowhere near as attractive as Paris but if you're a millionaire you'll have a good life anywhere.

And Manchester is a dump compared to Paris to anyone not actually from Manchester.

Never been in Manchester, but Paris isn't that great and the weather is shit. Barcelona on the other hand is awesome.

I never understood people talking about players wanting to choose better cities (London or Paris as stated a lot) over Manchester. I myself and not from Manchester and have only been there 5 times but I love the place, it has everything you want. Football is a job for players and when getting the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world I doubt they think twice about location.

Well it was confirmed in May and he never signed until around mid July. So maybe not that slow.

I was under the assumption that the deal in general was done by then though.
