Memphis Depay | Corinthians player

If you’re familiar with his upbringing you don’t need to be Sigmund Freud to work out why that is.
He's had a rough childhood and it's no wonder he has some quirks, but it doesn't justify everything. At least, not in my opinion.

Sure. Loads of footballers have had a similarly shitty upbringing without turning out the same way. I just think it’s interesting to see behaviour/attitudes in context. Even the way he changed his name shows badly he was affected by events in his childhood.

Pretty sure Mourinho gave an interview stating we do have a buy back clause on both Depay and Januzaj

Yep, and as far as upbringing goes, his was especially terrible, there was a docu about it on TV here a while ago. His dad's a proper piece of shite.

Wait, you lost me here. Isn't it 35 mil his release clause for Man Utd?

There is no release clause since it's illegal in France but there is an agreement around 35m according to Aulas.

He is only good for second tier teams . His ego and team spirit wont take him anywhere above.
He is player who scores goals, has flair, has technique, has solid pace and can dribble and can cross. Basically he is everything what our first choice right winger is not. But we sold him. Huge mistake from us

Dude, he only played a good game for us , against a lower league team. Huge sell by us.

Well there was the fact he is totally unable to do any of those things against the top teams

This is a completely new player compared with the United years. Top talent now.

I'm not so sure.
Depay was always fantastic against teams of low quality.
I remember we played Brugge and he was great. He was great against Midjyland (at OT).
The very next games, he would be up against EPL opposition and he'd be crap.
So, it doesn't surprise me that he is playing well against fodder.
Let him face an EPL side and my belief is that he will do absolutely nothing of note, during the match.
EPL defenders eat Depay for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which is why LVG and then Jose lost belief in him. ;)

PS. talking about fodder: he was great in the Dutch league, against fodder, too. So there is consistency - against fodder, he is great, against decent opposition he is crap. There doesn't seem to be any in-between with Depay.

He's not a right winger and would be garbage there. He is a pure forward that is benefiting from virtually no other responsibilities than trying to finish off attacking moves. I'd say Martial would easily bench him if he came.

At £35m we might as well roll the dice with him. We'd have to pay £35m to bring someone like Glenn Whelan in.

I wouldn't take him on a free transfer with free wages.
He is not good enough to play for MUFC.

I realise that we are in 8th place, but standards are really falling in this place.

Martial is several levels above Depay. I don't think anybody would claim otherwise.

Well we've seen that it's not Martial he would compete with if he returned but Lukaku rather. And there's no comparison between the two this season. He's holding up the ball much better than a centre forward who's played in that position his whole career.

Yes of course. Both players have high end product and low game involvement, both play from the left or middle, so I think getting Depay would be pointless since Martial is clearly better.

Completely different profile of player, Depay and Lukaku would never compete as a striker in the same system. Depay also has scored 6 from 17, thats barely better than Lukaku in the worst form of his life. If you take into account international football then Lukaku has a better record.

I spent a lot of time on here slating Depay but at £35m I think he'd be as good as you'd get in the transfer market to compete with Lukaku for the 9 position.

There's always a chance he's kicked on given his age.

That wouldn't be as good as you'd get, simply because you wouldn't know what you are buying. In the exact same role Nicolas Pépé has been a lot better and would probably be cheaper or around the same fee.

Who would you get for £35m guaranteed to do a great job?

I don't know but the issue with Memphis is that there is no guarantee that he would do an average job. Bear in mind that his numbers aren't based on regular performances they are inflated by two games against bad teams. At this point in time, he needs to keep developing and become consistent and reliable.

You seems like sleeping when he was playing against Manchester City, France, Germany etc recently ?

He wasn't exactly great against City, lots of sloppy touches and mis-controls (like he used to do here), and mid season glorified friendlies against France and Germany are hardly indicative.

He terrorized France and Germany in the Nation's league.

The game against France shouldn't be used to draw any conclusions. The attitude from french players was wrong from the first second, they were lethargic and avoided every single duels. Bergwijn and Babel were at the same level.

I'm just interested to see where he heads next,if he is eager for a move.
Cant see us showing any interest though.

Edit: I can see him in Serie A.AS Roma to be even more precise.

I agree France were shite, but he was much better than Bergwijn and Babel. Which still doesnt say much mind.

I didn't thought that he was much better, he was leading the attack but you could have done the same that night.:D

Funny thing is that he is being belittled here, while Eredivisie legends de Jong and de Ligt are being hyped up in the other threads.

I could see him having a career in Italy like Mertens at Napoli, if he doesn't feck up.

Some people don't like his flashy style. It comes across as arrogant for some reason but his coaches including Jose only said good things about his professionalism and hard work.

I don't even mind those that think he is arrogant or too flashy.
My problem is that the same people that talk him down because he is doing well in a not very great Ligue 1 having failed here, are the same people that big up two players that have done next to nothing outside the Eredivisie. The Dutch Eredivisie.
