Fantastic signing for Bayern, imo the best available defender in the market and not even for a big fee. David Luiz's fee was twice as much

thats the buy of the season. What in the feck were us and barca thinking?

EDIT: behind Lewi. Bayern for Champions league this season.

Unbelievable that price. I don't get why we don't go for these players.

He wanted CL, understandably so considering he's 27 and hasn't played in it yet. Doubt we'd have had a chance if we were in for him.

Bayern definitely needed to strengthen, the cnuts.

Should have called Bayerns offer and raised it by €5-10 million, and then doubled his wages. We need quality and experience at the back almost as much as we need legs in midfield.

Oh my god, €26m is what, £20-21m? What the hell is wrong with us? I'm delighted with the signing of Di Maria, but we really needed a top defender. There are none left that are good enough so clearly we aren't getting any more. Very worrying. I suppose it's good for Blackett and Jones as Van Gaal clearly believes in them, but it's a big risk to hope that all these defenders reach a high enough level in one season. Our last signings will most likely be dms or box to box mids with good tackling ability, which is equally important.

EDIT: Having heard that he wanted Champion's League games, that's fair enough. We probably did want him in that case and he refused. Can't do anything about that.

Bayern have a great chance at winning the league this year and are one of the favourites for the champions league. For all we know we tried but he opted for Bayern.

For everyone so aghast at why we aren't signing him instead, how are you so certain we weren't interested and that he was (in us)?

I am bitter about Thiago. And bastards because what they doing to Dortmund and their latest comments over Reus.

We should have bid and raised the price. Not watch them get another bargain.

They are doing nothing to Dortmund. If it was not Bayern it would be somewhere else where Götze or Lewy went to.

Bayern definitely needed to strengthen, the cnuts.

With Martinez' ACL we lost the defensive midfielder and the backup for Boateng as the right defender. At the same time Rafinha is injured and we do not really have a right fullback as Lahm is needed in midfield especially when Thiago and Schweinsteiger are injured... On the left there is Dante and Badstuber - and the later should get a slow start after his two ACLs (he will be back - what he already showed was great). Van Buyten was a surplus last season as he hardly got playing time.

So yes, Bayern really had a problem there.

This is someone we should have gotten, especially with vidic gone.
Congrats to bayern but once we get Vidal we'll forget about Benatia :)

To be honest, I don't get why you pay so much for the players you actually do buy. Not that the players you signed this summer aren't great, of course they are. But there's really no reason why United overpaid so much basically every single time. It's not like it's impossible to do great business.

I don't think that's entirely fair. I think in today's world, United get screwed over because teams know we are desperate. Historically we have done good deals; Kagawa for example at 16m. Ok he hasn't turned out that brilliant, but at the time many considered it a steal. Vidic, Evra, De Gea... all signed for great deals.

Unfortunately at this moment, clubs know we NEED players. Once we get back to where we should be and are competing, that factor goes down and I'm sure we'll pick up some better deals.

Ed Woodward says hi.

Teams know that United are desperate so they're able to get as much as they can without being 'silly'.

in the last couple if years we didn t have a proper strategy in place and changing the manager and chief executive at the same time didn't help. In other words bad management

Kagawa was on the last year of his deal and we had no competition so I am not sure it is a steal. About right maybe. He has been shit though.

Vidic and Evra were a long time ago.

DDG was a good buy. Excellent player.

As you say, we are buying from a position of weakness. Other clubs consistently bought from a position of strength. If you look at Real Madrid's transfer policy since 2009, its been very good. They have made mega money selling on players.

At £21m. How the feck do they keep doing good business but we get completely fleeced with every deal

 Yeah let's just double every players wages, that's definitely not the act of a desperate club.

Yeah Bayern seem to get good deals for almost all their players they buy. Even Robben was fairly cheap if I remember correctly. Martinez was about the only player they couldn't get a good deal for but 40M € was still a fair price I guess.

maybe its just not a good idea to to blazon out, that you have a shitload of cash, that you are willing to spend ASAP. Sometimes I get the feeling that Ed wants to talk the price up.

Me too, I believe Ed is trying to launder huge amounts of cash as quick as he can, I'm sure his real name is Eduardo Woodwardo and he really belongs to a South American drug cartel!

Think we were definitely interested in him, but benatia probably hinted early for a cl club. We then quickly got the Rojo deal done.

If benaita settles and badstuber stays fit / recovers his old form then they are going to have a pretty amazing defence and the rest of the team is not bad either

Our defense was always very good but Dante seems to be a bit over the hill and we have the Javi problem. I love the Bernat signing. A great talent, proven already. With him and Benatia we really pushed an already great defense to the levels of the other team parts.
Great deal by the board. Thanks Kalle and Michael.

What happens when Martinez etc come back from injury? They'll be stocked surely

All the signs are there for a Dante exit. Pep doesnt trust his built up play. We always knew that Dante wouldnt last for 5 years.

Btw; Lewandowski,Benatia,Reina,Rode and Bernat for 40 million euros. I take that.

Think Dante might be sold next season. Depending on how the season goes Javi might go back to midfield once he is fit as well.

Where's that offside twat that was arguing with me the other week?

Shame.

Probably didnt have a chance to get him once Bayern got serious though.

Who is left? Blind, obviously. I like Schar at Basel. Manolas? Not sure who else but I think we need a defender and midfielder still.

Blind isn't a centre-half. Manolas signed for Rome as Benatia's replacement, I think. Schär would be a good option. Musacchio maybe.

And we bought Rojo for £5 million less? Why doesn't that surprise me...

Then again, we don't have every god given right to sign every great player that becomes available, something we all know and have seen many times.

Benatia to Bayern and Rojo to Man Utd illustrates the difference in pulling power now. Sad.
