I may look really stupid if anyone reads this back in 2024 and De Ligt is captain of a Barcelona side who’ve just won the treble...

... But as of May 2019, I’ve got a feeling that De Ligt won’t make it.

Seriously, you think so? Have a feeling he'll become the best player in the world, probably even better, or atleast more crucial to his team than even Mbappe

It’s clear there’s nothing to see here. Our name just gets thrown into every transfer saga.

Oh wow, totally missed this, I thought he was nailed on for Barca from the beginning

that's because that's what Barca press wants you (and other clubs) to believe. I'm so sick of how they use their press to drive off competition.

Supporting his pal Ole no doubt. He doesn't know anything about who we are targeting.

De Ligt already has a massive ego and perception of his own qualities. Raiola is his agent and already would have informed him of what Pogba has been through. There is zero chance of him coming to United especially when we have no CL and he has his pick of clubs. Seems like too many are basing their hopes on the Telegraph article which was a totally shameless leak by Raiola using us to get to Barca.

All this "He hasn't decided/agreed with Barca" is very similar to Raiola's repeated statements of "Pogba hasn't made a deal with any club" during the time he signed for us.
How is this supporting his pal? If anything its the opposite. Publicly declaring we are after a player, if he rejects us then that reflects badly on the club and the manager. He may not know who we are targeting but he's more likely to know something than one of us.

And what exactly has Pogba been through? He earns more than he deserves, when he clashed with a manager who wanted him out, the club let the manager go and even now when there are rumors of him wanting to go, all respectable sources seem to agree that if he pushes for a move and Madrid pay up, we'll let him go. So how have we wronged him in any way?

If you are looking from Riaola's pov, it makes more sense for his 19 year old client to move to Utd, where he would earn big money and after a few years he could agitate for a move to another club, like the Pogba situation. On the other hand if he goes to Barca, that's where he will be for the majority of his career and hence less commission for Riaola. And btw Riaola isn't his agent, he's an advisor hired by De Ligt for this particular transfer. All the more reason Riaola would want to get De Ligt a financially beneficial deal which keeps the door open for further profit to him and his client.

You should be sick of English and other clubs believing everything their press writes or makes up in that case. They'll keep doing it until it stops being effective and probably rightfully so - just a smart business tactic if it works.

How can they drive off competition when all it takes is one phone call to player's agent or Ajax to confirm the news?

Have you ever watched and listened to De Ligt? He is one of the most egoless guys in football nowadays. Always humble and realistic, always makes sense what he says. Of course he knows he's a special talent, that's why every top 10 club wants to sign him, but he's aware he has work to do to raise his game

Feck that £100m fraud that Napoli are trying to convince the world. No different than Sergej Milinkovic-Savic last summer when he was randomly hyped up with a ridiculous fee out of nowhere.

...the stars are aligning. De Ligt it is

Seems like news designed to force Barcas hand a bit, also wouldn't be surprised if United went along with it to move their business forward also. If we're going to a CB then make sense to put pressure on others going for CBs also so their agents can't use them in negotiations.

If and I still see it as a ridiculously big if, this would be a truly superb bit of business if it happens. I don’t want to get suckered in yet though, bit soon.

We have to throw money at this one. That's all we can offer him at the moment but this is as risk free as in investment can be. Even if he flops here or wants to move in a few years we will be able to recoup most of what we pay him.

I don't think it's happening, but it would be a good signing. Would still need a right back and a good midfielder or two to fix our defence

This is a Keane, Ferdinand, Rooney type signing. We've wasted so much money in recent years but this is one you pay what it takes to get over the line. Could be a genuine game changer for us, on and off the field. He's exactly what we're lacking in so many ways.

He's the type of player that if we sign, others of the quality we need will follow.

Player who wants to go somewhere else coming here instead because we blow them out of the water financially?

Hasn't exactly worked out well for us lately.

If anyone wanted to go somewhere else, they would. Only one who signed whose heart wasn't in it was ADM. He went and joined the club he wanted to join anyway a year later once they were able to buy him.

Come on people, let's not do this to ourselves shall we?

The mention of larger economical powers coming in does not necessarily mean United. The most likely is City unfortunately.

They are in the market for a CB or two. Do you really think they will pass up the chance to sign De Ligt if he is available?

He's Barca or City bound for sure.

If I was de ligt I'd choose United. He's a young talent, whose work in progress and who will cost a bomb to buy. One false move at a big club who are fighting for honours and he'll end up like Rugani. At united he will be paid shit loads of money. We are in the EL which means he won't find serious competition for a year and since all our defence is shit he will play week in week out irrespective what he does.

I don't believe... but I am wondering why Barcelona has not signed him straight away...
