This isn't over, until we see a flood of stories about how "we were never even in for him" all sweep the UK press at the same time.

Think he’d get his pants pulled down far too often in his first couple seasons if we got him. I’d like him for the long term but don’t think he would solve our issues next season or possibly the year after.

He is young so it is to be expected, but he does seem a bit all or nothing at times.
Not the words you want to hear associated with a CB.

He is very young, playing in a position where you rarely find young players performing at elite levels.

But that's not what he said. He said we never had a realistic chance when pitched against Barcelona & company, because we have so many problems at the club at the moment. Even if this rebuild does work out, it will be multiple seasons before it starts seeing true dividend and De Ligt has better offers on the table.
Nobody knows if it will be several seasons, and the club may, or may not, have as many problems as it seems right now from down the doldrums.

Like him but not what we need. Be different if he was coming in playing next to a 35 year old Rio or Vidic but the PL has a way of exposing your vulnerabilities and I suspect whatever ones he has, he'll be getting no help from any of our current CB's....

So you're saying we need a flawless CB?

He beaks up the defensive line far too easy and often. Overcommits to random situations. Clear signs of inexperience.

Need a Rio-esque partner to cover for his ass.

Also not impressed by his tendency to always pick the easy pass while rarely driving the ball up the field. Dare I say, I'm starting to change my opinion of him a bit.

He's exactly what we need, not only is he one of the best CB's in the world, he's a leader as well and at 19 there's not a box he doesn't tick

He's clearly quality but I think he's not dissimilar to the Pogba signing, the level of expectation he's going to have to be.

More rubbish, Pogba was an attacking player De Ligt would have no where near the same level of scrutiny on him. Stop posting you don't have a clue what you're talking about

I think this was my point. I guess it's like signing Wayne Rooney, I fundamentally believe he wouldn't have succeeded in the way he did if he joined Utd this season. These type of players need the experience around them to cover up their inexperience especially in the PL....

Update the title please to not get fellow muppets hopes up. Maybe something like 'Barca/PSG favourites'.

Love forums, full of idiots that would rather post insults and their opinions like they are a fecking science. The idea that we would sign him and wouldn't have the same level of scrutiny as Pogba is in my opinion laughable. People would look at his game forensically and every mistake he made would be magnified. That said, it's just my opinion which I'm entitled to make without calling you a fecking idiot.....

Genuinely reminiscent of a young Phil Jones - his physical maturity relative to his age makes him stand out, and masks a lack of defensive intellect that he may or may not develop with experience.

He’s not a risk United can take at the minute - if Koulibaly isn’t available, then just get Alderweireld and Koscielny on a free to add to Smalling, Lindelof, Bailly and Jones; they’d improve the depth of quality and experience in the position, allowing resources to be used to strengthen other positions, and evaluate the market next summer.

See how Ben Godfrey develops in the Premier League, and also Kamara at Marseille - they’d be better value signings for next year, and could be signed and loaned back in January ahead of next year.

Nice try but if you were trying to sound serious you needed to omit Koscielny from your list

Totally agree regarding the young jones comparison and he is not what we need right now. He’s struggle like De Gea did. I’m all for Alderweireld + 1 other

Jones excelled during a CL campaign and was a leader of a team battling for a final?

That's news to me.

Hopefully he can announce his move to Barca or PSG and we can move on from being bystanders in this transfer saga.

At least we gave it a good go and asked some serious questions. I hope he doesn’t go Barca now, just for the lols of them getting financially outmuscled.

I do feel a bit uneasy with him, scores goals and is physically strong, but has a lot of defensive errors in most matches that I watch. He's a bit like a young Sergio Ramos. I'm not sure if that's what we need, a pure defender like VVD / Vidic / Pepe may be more useful for us to partner with Lindelof.

Koulibaly would be the obvious choice.

Indeed. He made lots of errors over these two games, got skinned a number of times, lost strength battles and lost headers.

And the nitpicking begins.

It’s not nitpicking really. There was an egregious error against England and many more smaller ones over the two games. It wasn’t that hard to win headers against them in their box either. Remember Sancho missed a sitter against Holland on Thursday with his head.

He’s young of course so should get better but he’s a step off elite for me at the moment.

I think the Ramos comparison is a good one because his threat at the other end and character makes people forget the errors.

If every CB lived up to the standard people set for them on here every match would end 0-0. And teenage CBs are rarely playing high profile matches like this.

I am one of the few here who still rate Phil Jones but, at De Ligt's age he was making random 60 yard runs up the pitch while playing as a CB. His first season with the club Jones/Evans were the starting CB pair at the start of the season and while the Football was entertaining we were conceding like 20 shots per match.

De Ligt spoke with Univision TV here in Porto. He said he's going on vacation now and he wants a cold-headed time to think about his future. No clue of which club to choose.

Yeah, all valid until Kos. A player who Arsenal thought is not good enough

Typical Raiola hype, could we see an Adidas campaign for whoever signs him?

Sunshine or Disneyland.
