A center back. He played left back because Bayern and Germany had no one to use there at the time.

Babstuber impressed me more than Hummels in this tournament.
Real Madrid dont pay that for defenders. Pepe was about their limit.

sorry but not sure you've been watching properly then. Badstuber hasnt been poor but Hummels has been everywhere.
Has been beat by some good runs behind him and the long ball but could be just that he doesnt see that type of quality run that often in the Bundesliga. As he face more top quality strikers he will adapt as he has all the tools (Pace, recovery, determination, positioning)
They bid 30 million Euros for Fabio Coentrao.
I'm sure they'll bid 10's of millions for any player, provided they are good enough.
95 million euros for CR7, a wide forward/winger, 75 million euros for Zidane in 2001, 65 million euros for Kaka etc.
If they want a top top defender, they'll pay.
Very good defender Hummels. New contract or not, I see him moving clubs in a season or 2. The likes of Real, Barca, Bayern etc likely destinations.

McClaren on 5live kept saying he had shades of Beckenbaur about him. because the "modern centre back" is a "ball playing centre back" and "can dribble forward" or something to that effect.
We could do with a few Germans or Spaniards...
They never do. Thats why they havent bought a top defender. They bought a potential top defender in Pepe.
Coentrao has been used more in midfield than defence.
We need to start poaching them bofore Bayern, Barca and Real do then.
Next summer we should break the bank to sign this lad as rios replacement IMO.

smalling / jones / evans / vidic clearly isnt enough.
I think rio will be forced to retire soon if the reports are true about his back.
We would only sign him if Ferguson sees him as someone too good to miss out on as he has many times before. We are stacked with quality at CB though and I can imagine Hummels being priced insanely highky

I think Rio is gonna be goners at the end of this season unfortunately. His back is too unpredictable at this stage, he's fine one minute then he opens a packet of crisps and he goosed for 2 months.

Hummels is a great defender especially because he can open the game with his great passes from the back.
It's also really amazing like he almost never fouls the opposition players.
The only negative points with him is that he sometimes gets a bit overconfident and makes easy mistakes because of it but I have a good feeling that he can work on that and then again there is almost no defender in the world that never commits a costly mistake.
That being said he will cost a fortune. At least 40 mio. € I reckon.

No it isnt sarcasm, even with rio in the team now we are struggling to field a fit pair of centre backs.
And you think two of Evans/Jones/Smalling will be happy to sit on the bench for 75% of the season? As if, they'd just up and leave if we bought Hummels. If you look around every club you'll see the majority of them have two experienced players (often one capable of filling in at fullback to get game time), and two young players who're gradually being phased in. 4 centre backs is completely normal yet we have 5.

And Richards is a right back, whereas all five of ours are genuine centre backs. So looking at that we already have too many...and yet you're demanding we spend £30m on another! There simply isn't enough game-time for all of them. The vast majority of teams prefer to play a midfielder at centre back (Van Bommel, Tymoschuk, Busquets, Mikel etc.) than bring in another centre back to do nothing for 90% of the season. You want a centre back just because you're fed up of having no centre backs but it only lasts for a tiny portion of the season and it simply isn't practical on any level.

Hummels has United written all over him, whether we can afford him or get him is a different story.
Like brwned said, we really don't need him. Obviously he'd be an improvement but we've got 3 promising center backs already. Maybe 2 or 3 years back before we signed Smalling and jones but no chance right now.
And of those, Hummels crushes each one in talent save Vidic. And for as many seasons as I can remember in recent times, we've favored a tough as nails CB paired with a smart one. Vidic and Rio.
Jones is a Vidic type defender who we've all said is very suspect at CB and could end up replacing Fletcher as our go to DM. Evans has been here long enough for us to know what he's capable of and I'm not overly convinced he'll ever become world class. Too many mental lapses even after the last few seasons. Smalling has the best chance, but Fergie seems to favor him as an O'Shea utility defender rather than a set in stone CB.
If Rio retires, I think we need a replacement and Hummels will only get better.

Hummels only really makes sense if theres plans to sell Vidic....which considering Vidic age and recent injuries, he's not going for £20m anymore.
Vidic is starting to become less of a certainty for me now. Plus with Ferdinand getting on and Rafael/Smalling/Jones so seemingly injury prone I don't think Vidic being here would be all that bad.
The Mirror claim we are after him and Lars Bender, I don't know anything about Lars as I've only seen Sven play but Hummels would be a great signing IMO.
