Mata | Mourinho says it's just a Mata of time

IMO having Rooney would improve Chelsea more than having Mata would improve us but Chelsea are going to get more out of Mata than we'll get out of Rooney if both stay. I'd love it if we swapped Rooney for Mata, we'd have a player that might actually want to play for us and a damn good one.

Mata is younger and will be quality well into his thirties imo. In the long term we'd benefit more.

I can't imagine Chelsea would sell him to us without Rooney going in the other direction..

However, this is Mourinho - he has a huge ego, and he likes to do things which could be considered a risk, as brave or whatever. Maybe he would be ok selling Mata to us, and saying that he doesn't worry, that he's happy with the squad without Mata, that he doesn't need to care about who he sells to and doesn't need to worry about rivals but concentrate on themselves.

It seems like Mourinho wanted rid all summer, its quite bizarre.

Bizarre to not play him tonight, especially whilst not playing a striker who can hold the ball up. If he wants his quick attackers played in behind Vidic and Rio surely Mata'd be the ideal player to make that happen.

Mata won't be able to do for Spurs what Bale did last season so they really wouldn't. I guess overall they would have given the players they've brought in this window though.
He can't do exactly what bale can but he can too many other things much better. The team would generally play better with mata than bale. They'd lose that player who can pull out a goal out of nothing though.

According to Stan Collymore/Talksport and his source within the Chelski hierarchy, they don't think he show up in big matches.

He has been consistently their best player against us to begin with.

I think it's safe to say that there's a rather good chance that he'll leave.

Aye that's strange, Oscar isn't exactly blessed with pace and Mata is twice the player.

I wonder how unfit Kagawa is? I would imagine he would be a natural starter in this tight midfield formation we are playing against.

Lack of pace is the only thing I can think of.

Which he doesnt have. Mata is quick, quicker than De Bruyne for a start and the only attackers Chelsea have that are definitely faster are Hazard and Schurrle.

Honestly the only part that makes sense is that Mourinho has said "Oscar is my man" and decided that he wants Oscar in those central areas where Mata has been playing teammates in for years.

But once again there's a problem. Mata was fantastic on the left for Valencia using his crossing ability and without stepping on Silva's toes in the middle for example. Maybe Mourinho doesnt know about this or has forgotten about it like plenty of posters on here who dont realise Mata was a top left winger before he was ever a Chelsea player.

Check out this lack of pace and lack of crossing ability

Mata, Torres and £30m is the "rival offer" for Bale.

Mata ain't joining Spurs. Should have started tonight and should have played tonight. Something is definitely up.

A line up with no strikers and mata is on the bench, shocking.

Bizarre that he's not starting. He would have given them much needed control further up the pitch.

Is he just too exciting for Mourinho? Would playing him have been too risky for Chelsea, getting 3 points instead of the 1 Mourinho wanted?

I'd happily have him at United. Class player, and cannot believe he didn't play any part today.

The pace reason isn't the real excuse surely? He's not Hazard but he's hardly Crouch or Heskey either, whenever I watch him he seems fairly quick.

Mata was the vital cog in Chelsea last year, absolute madness that he's not getting a chance.
