Gaming Mass Effect: Andromeda (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

I agree with Art Vandelay regards the witcher 3 side quests . I don't know what more you could ask for from simple side quests. There was nearly always a twist to every single one, where the monster you thought you were tracking was actually something else, or you were being set up by the contract giver etc and they always had unique dialogue lines and often moral decisions to make.

I'm just replaying ng+ at the moment and had the sidequest of helping blueboy logos face his fears in the cave of dreams, hilarious. Also just done the sidequest with the Jarl and the hym curse. Fantastic side quest. I have no idea what more you could expect from side quests than those in the Witcher 3 but I'm confident they are unrealistic.

The fetch quests in Witcher 3 are the treasure hunts, which are reasonable not to bother with. The difference between the treasure hunts and every actual side quest in the game is obvious and to loop them together as 'fetch quests' is clearly ludicrous to anyone who has experienced doing both.

I guess you could rather have single mission side quests done away with completely? And just have the longer side quest arcs like the bloody baron storyline. Not sure I completely agree with that either.

No way. Shoddy combat and fetch quests galore.

Beautiful to look at but boring as feck and too many long, boring scenes of Geralt talking to pointless women.
Combat was great.

And the side quests are one the reasons why this game is so highly regarded. Because unlike most games they were nearly as well done and written as the main stories of other games.

The Witcher 3 probably had the best side quests in an open world single player game of recent years. The baron quest line alone has been unmatched in anything I can think of.

The latest Deus Ex game approached it pretty solidly too, opting for less but much richer side quests.

No, I didn't miss on the best part of the game. That 'best part of the game' was boring me to death, and the options were either stop doing them, or stop playing the game. For me, it was close to a game-breaker (after I did the first million of them).

I didn't miss anything important in terms of story.
All the characters, including Leto were there. As I said before, I did the character quests and they were great, but go and kill the millionth monster after you have been doing it for the last 20 hours stops being fun after you do that 3 times.

And yep, Geralt is a witcher who kills monsters for money. He kills like a monster for book or so. He kills more in the first five hours of the game than in his life. And you actually stop getting XP for those 'brilliant quests' after a while.
Every quests isn't supposed to affect your story. That's the whole point of a game of this scale. If you want purely story oriented games then TLOU and Uncharted are your games.

I also don't get the criticism of The Witcher 3's side quests. I thought they were full of great little stories. Not every quest is a life changing experience but writing them off as fetch quests is ridiculous. There are just a shitload of them and they don't move the narrative forward, so I fully understand people growing tired of them. That's all right, they're there for those who want to take the time to do them. Those who want to move the game forward and skip them still have a ridiculously large game left to them. But they're interesting enough and I'd say they add something to the game, you can't say that about fetch quests.

I think I need to report a bug on the Caf, whenever I click on the link to the Mass Effect thread it takes me to the one for The Witcher 3.

Some people seem to just be critical of games for the sake of it. It's like they (you) want to find flaws in the game to ramble on about.

I don't know any game that's perfect but The Witcher 3 and The Last of Us come pretty damn close. Sure they have their faults but the overall experience of both overcomes them.

Also regarding the side quests of The Witcher 3:
They don't have anything to do with the main story - well they're not supposed to, that's why they're side quests, so people who don't want to do them don't miss anything from the main story.
They don't give good XP - Again, that's so as not to force people to do them to level up for the main story. They still give plenty of good armor & weapons.
They're "fetch" based & repetitive - Sure, sometimes, but it's a 100-150 hour OWG, not every one will have unique gameplay.

Been a while since any new videos ridiculing the facial animations have come out so everyone's just passing the time now.

My copy should finally arrive today - can't wait to find out if it's as bad as everyone is making out...

I really liked ME 2 and 3. I haven't followed this thread thoroughly, but it seems the game isn't actually as bad as everyone thought it would be? Might pick it up.

Opinions online actually seem to be mostly positive about it, acknowledging that it's not up there with the original trilogy but a good game despite the flaws and that the reviews aren't a fair reflection. Definitely more tempted to get it now.

I've swung round, I'm really excited to play it tonight. Feck the online reviews, I'll play it and enjoy it the best I can.

My first thoughts are not great. Can't even load the fecker up. Looks like I have a dodgy disc

I don't think anyone thought it would be terrible. The only prediction I remember with regards to metacritic score was low 80s.

The game is great if you are into mass effect. Im not seeing any drop in quality from 2 and 3 and infact this feels more like a spiritual successor to 1. Apart from a few glitches here and there its exactly what mass effect is all about.

Ok, I'm buying this!

I played it last night for 3/4 hours and really enjoyed it. Was hard getting myself to stop.

Oh , @Mr Pigeon , the story line about the pathfinder is actually pretty decent. Their dad has N7 armour, I don't think they have it when you start....

Really enjoying the multiplayer - anyone playing on PS4? Could do with some good teammates :)

I've seen the first five hours or so and I didn't like how quickly your character decides that he's worthy of being the Pathfinder and how you meet so many people who treat you like a god. I suppose I'll find out more tonight because I'm weak and picked it up on my way to work

This is completely based on how you decide to put yourself across in dialogue. In multiple play through absolutely no one believes in me before I set up the first outpost. Before that no one believes I can do it. Especially the council.

Yeah, first impression videos are difficult to figure out sometimes. I had every intention of getting this game anyway, just didn't think it would be so soon. I only went in the shops this morning for milk and found myself holding the game at the checkout.

Ok so I have been watching my brother playing this all morning.

All I can say is, erm, wow. It's laughably bad in places.

there's a novel approach. Bit controversial, though...why didn't you just go with the regurgitated, preconceived & myopic opinion?

Did you have it max settings or 4k etc?
Running it on high at 1440p with a GTX 970 and I never seem top drop below 60fps. I might try Ultra later, I have a G-Sync monitor so 40-50 FPS should still be really smooth.

sweet!

Are you looking forward to ATI's Vega release when they eventually do release it? I will wait for that because hopefully it will bring down the prices and give us an actual choice in the CPU market.

Bar the vast majority of them. Go there, use your witcher senses to track something, find something /kill something, get back and profit. The character quests were cracking in addition to awesome civil war quests but other than that the side quests were as boring as in any other game.

That's not a fetch quest though... you are going back to let them know you completed the quest not taking them anything. How do you get expect to complete quests otherwise?

Well I'll be sticking with Nvidia given I paid €600 for this monitor but yeah, be good to have proper competition again.

The animation really is terrible thankfully you notice it rarely. Enjoying the game so far.

I really dont know how they got the animation so bad though. Incredible for a big studio

Maybe its a texture streaming issuse, or maybe its frostbite, but the alien character models seem a step down.

When you get a close up on say, Drack the krogan, his face looks low res conpared to krogans from the previous games, which is mental. :3

The amount of times you've mentioned Vega now!

But yeah I'm also interested in it. Been rocking a 480rx and so far that's been more than capable, though I've yet to try it with VR.

My character has a batarian mother. Whenever she close her eyes to eyes appear just above.

I was listening to the Giant Bomb podcast and they seemed very disappointed with the game.

It hit me hard when one of them mentioned that the protagonist at one point jokes "The snark is strong with this one" as some out of place Star Wars reference. That's quite insane really.

Writing was the one thing they should have gotten right. I'll try to judge it myself, but expectations are really low right now.

Trying not to get this before any substantial discount, but might cave because of my own stupidity.

Yeah the character models are awful. I was thinking the same in the first Cutscene with the Kett.

Despite that the game is pretty good though. I am really enjoying it.
