Carl Anka on Mount here if anyone is interested on what managers value in him. (Posted as someone who is skeptical myself).
I never rated Mount - but after seeing why fans may not rate him but why managers do - it just makes me respect him as a player especially if someone like Ten Hag is going for him.
Fair play, we as fans know shit all about football because we only know it with our eyes.
It's all relative to our current budget so it's hard to call, but £60 million seems like a fair chunk of it whilst the takeover is still in progress. £60 million on a player with a year left should be reserved for world class potential talent, nobody else pays close to that on someone that's coming out of a season mixed with bad performances and injuries. If it's in the £30 million region then that means we can still afford a top midfielder potentially, but otherwise the value lies in waiting another year, and using that money to strengthen elsewhere in the squad. There's also the incentive of leaving Chelsea in a role rather than helping their books, to fund the likes of Ugarte or Caicedo.

This is my point. They’re in identical contract/FFP situations.
€80m for Mount guarantees Kane is worth €120m.
Mount should be going for €50-60m max. Kane should not be going for €100m.
We run the risk of setting an artificial market that only we are competing in.

When Bruno or Eriksen is out we have to revert to Mctominay and Fred and he's a damn sight better than both of those... We need quality in depth aswell as the first 11.
Excellent point. We should have backups in place and be prepared to walk away and come back in January. Ideal is to get them both on a free but they'll likely go to the club who was most recently interested in them
This type of circumstances only factor in if the selling club absolutely wants a deal to be made. Otherwise you could easily end up in a similar situation to Lewandowski at Dortmund, they didn't want to sell and didn't, only a ridiculous fee would have made them change their minds.
Is he any good? I haven't watched Chelsea at all this season, but from what I'm hearing we're just buying another McTominay.

If we are getting the Mason Mount from 2 years ago for £50-55m then great. Young, English and scores goals but we are bidding on a player who's had an awful season? How do we know his good period was not a fluke and the Mount from this season is the real deal? People saying he hasn't had much game time but he's been involved in 24 games with over 1600mins in the Prem alone. That's hardly minimal opportunity to perform.
Also, why isn't the same logic being applied to Youri Tielmans who we could get on a FREE transfer. Yes he's had a bad season, but 2 seasons ago a lot of top clubs were after him. Even if you were to argue Mount is a little better, is he really £55m better?

Would be pretty nuts for any club outside the state funded to buy a player for +50m (+200k wages..) and use him as a second string option. Wouldn’t make a world of sense for 24 yo Mount either to move to our bench

I simply can’t see a bidding war developing. He’s very good. But a player they want to sell, who will be free to sign in January, for €80m is fantasy.

He's always struck me as Chelsea's Lingard.
I don’t think Mount would be coming to be on the bench for what it’s worth, but it’s good to remember we compete directly with state funded clubs and they do exactly that.
City bought Kalvin Phillips, a full England international at the time for £50m and on £150k pw just to keep him as squad player. They bought Mahrez the year after they bought B.Silva, while having D.Silva in the squad who was still playing excellently back then (season 18/19).
That who we’re competing with. If you don’t want quality depth for fear it costs too much, it means you will likely not compete.
EDIT: We also bought Antony the year after getting Sancho while also having youngsters like Amad, Pellistri and Elanga on the RW. So there’s that

Yeah like I have already said there is reservations but not just gonna write him off. I am gonna remain positive that Erik can help him find that sparkling 20/21 season again
His 21/22 form was even better. Only this year he was poor, partly because the whole team was rubbish and partly because he was often played on the wing

Mount is not FDJ or Modric, fair enough. He might develop in that direction. His progressive carry stats are good but he doesn’t have the dynamism of FDJ. His passing is good but he doesn’t have the vision of Modric. He will improve us in terms of possession though and will help us get it from the back to the likes of Bruno and Rashford without giving it away (leave that bit to Bruno, haha).
The Scholes type who conducts the whole match from the centre of the pitch is, I’m sure you’ll agree, incredibly rare. If we can / could get someone like that, great, but I don’t see many out there.
Mount is 24 and has high resale value and Kane has close to zero resale value.
If Mount was locked into a long term contract at Chelsea, they wouldn't want to sell him. But if push came to shove and he forced a move, they'd easily demand £75m from a rival in today's market. So £50m is about right in the current circumstances.
Madrid bid £190m for Mbappe when he only had a year left on his deal. Clubs are prepared to pay hefty transfer fees with a year left on a contract because they would end up paying close enough to the same amount in higher wages/agent fees if they got the player on a free transfer.

Two players signed on a 3 or 4 year deal have the same resale value. Zero.
I hate the modern trend of fans getting in the balance sheet, but it’s somewhat valid here.
My point isn’t that the actual numbers are off. Only that we are setting the market. Nobody is paying €100m for Kane or €80m for Mount. We seem to be choosing to.

Didn’t EtH say something like there is no value in the premier league? I guess the only pros are Mount has substantial league and top club experience. He’s better than McFred for sure but we can use that money better elsewhere if he really wants Kane as well.

Its not that Mount doesn't conduct the match from the center of the pitch, its that he doesn't really play in the center of the pitch at all. You can see it in heat maps (https://www.sofascore.com/player/mason-mount/836694) and its not just this year's Chelsea team, even when he played exclusively as an 8 in the 19-20 season he basically was an attacking midfielder on one side of the pitch, playing high up and moving from the half space to the sideline. Compare those kind of heat maps to a real CM like FDJ (https://www.sofascore.com/player/frenkie-de-jong/795222), Gundogan (https://www.sofascore.com/player/ilkay-gundogan/45853), or Mac Allister (https://www.sofascore.com/player/alexis-mac-allister/895324) playing as an 8 in a 4-3-3 and its night and day.
