Mason Mount | Confirmed

Reports this morning were that they wanted £60m up front? That’s a big fecking climb down if true.

There is a bunch of games played in all the media outlets, it's all propaganda to put pressure on the other side. The fact that they walked away from 55mil but "wanted to sit down and talk" [to me] translates too, give us the 5 million that we want so we can "win" the deal for our fans, and we will reduce the year 1 payment so it's not a burden on your cash position.

United is a publically traded company so all of their finances are public information. This is another reason why its more difficult for United to buy/sell players.

I was MUCH more devastated when we sold you guys Mata or when Hazard left for Madrid.
That is interesting because I wasn't excited at all about Mata. He belonged to an outdated style of football, unlike Mount, who is the exact opposite.

Stop your whinging. You have a cheek calling anyone a moan. I don't think it's unreasonable to question £250-£300k a week wages for Mason Mount when we are supposed to be getting our wage structure under control after years of mismanagement.

Our wages as proportion of income is one of best in the league

Maybe he doesn't make that much? Unless a reporter has seen the contract (which he hasn't) anything reported is pure speculation. The fact people get upset about silly details like how much players make is silly too me.

Far more press resistant, can play as a 6 and an 8, more assured in possession.

This is an awful signing imo. It doesn't suit our tactical needs. We needed either a metronome or a player who can carry the ball.

What on earth? Literally one of Mount's best attributes is that he's press resistant and is elite at beating a press then carrying the ball.

Caicedo isn't in Mount's league in terms of playing with his back to the opposition or at ball progression. Very odd to say that you need a player whose strengths align perfectly with Mount then bemoan not signing someone who is worse at all the things you say you need.

City bought KdB for the same price or even less, I believe.
Around £70m, from Wolfsburg which a midtable German club. 8 years ago.
Nowadays any half decent player is at the very minimum £35m.
Enzo Fernandez went for 120m on the back of 3 good games at the WC.
Even Ugarte, who no one ever heard of save for those who watch the Portuguese league, is rumored to go for 65m to PSG.

You might have answered this, is Mount good as an 8?

I don't think some people quite understand how unvaluable players who get in the final season of their contract are. If someone offered 30m for Pogba when we knew he wanted to go or 20m for Herrera when he wanted to go we would rip their hands off, but apparently paying 55m for Mount(who let's say is similar quality to them) should be some kind of big positive news.

Money aside, which is big factor tbf, considering I really doubt we would spend much over 100-130m in total, this is another proof that Erik's style of football is pretty similar to one we played this season, which is another concern for me. He obviously doesn't care much about midfield control, otherwise I doubt he would buy Mount to play next to Casemiro, playing quick counter football and creating quick chances out of nothing is the style he will continue to prefer. All while we struggle to control for good parts of the game and probably won't play much good football over 90 minutes, but rather try to score from random individual quality, and defend in numbers for rest of the game.

It depends on how they will play, they might not need one. They are linked with Gabriel Veiga but City are supposedly also going for him.

So basically they were happy to let him go.

Yeah because obviously the only problem with these posts is that they aren't wanking Mount off.

Moan, moan, moan. And the time between the first and last ones I've quoted aren't even enough time to play a game of football.

Criticism is fine, hence why I haven't picked up on any of your comments. But the ones where folk are just looking for something to bitch about like always? feck me, mate. It's bloody tragic.
It's reverse jinxing and you're ruining it.

@dubplate warrior he’s the best progressive carrier of the ball in the PL from centre mid positions.

That was my reply just before the champions league final.Incredibly, Bernardo had the 'assist' before the Rodri goal.

I dont know why our fans rave on a player who has done nothing big in his own career yet in 2 years he will be 30 years old.
Imagine Bruno having a champions league final assist to a winning goal. Cafe would explode with adoration yet Bruno has never played in a champions league semi final in his career to date.
But miraculously, we want to win big titles with him being the talisman of the team.

If we need to move a level ahead in our pursuit for glory then many of these players need to leave.
Players who have won absolutely nothing in their careers, getting obscene salaries, while being treated like royalty.
The Bruno's, Maguire, Fred, Bissaka, Martial, Sancho of this world these are players who have never won any meaningful titles in their careers, never been involved in any crunch matches as a norm but are revered and get obscene amount of money yet they have failed to deliver to date. Not that they will turn out like Salah.

See the difference, someone young like Licha, Antony, say old Case players who have won league titles do to a team. It's completely visible the difference between a player who has won league titles + champions league and these other players.

Its one thing that killed Arsenal this season. Having players who know how to win. Us we have multiple players who just are okay being in auto-pilot mode of a top4. Harry-Kane style.
Drivel. Get rid of our assist machine because he hasn't been a champions leage semi. What about Rashford? He hasn't either, or Sancho.

Mount excelled under Tuchel playing the exact opposite of counter attack football.
It’s hard to argue against though when you’ve simply made up Ten Hag intentions in your head and stated it as fact.

Okay so which 80-100M number 9 will he feed? If Weghorst or Martial are still at the club by August, it shows our ambition is to finish 5/6.

Who do you think will replace Mount?

With Caicedo and Enzo in double pivot and Nkunku at 10, he is not really needing to be replaced. Moving Enzo more forward meant he and Mount were destined for the same place. Enzo played further back, but that was out of necessity due to Kante being injured all year.

You might have answered this, is Mount good as an 8?

There's no way to answer this definitively as he hasn't had an extended run in a functional side as an 8. But he absolutely views himself as an 8, and I also think it's telling that when Chelsea were at our best under Tuchel, he was regularly dropping deeper into midfield. I don't remember who we were playing exactly, but Tuchel tried an experiment at one point where Mount stayed higher and Pulisic was the one dropping deeper and our attack was completely dysfunctional - as a linker between midfield and attack, Mount is elite no matter where he is lining up on the teamsheet.

People keep pointing to the CL run as evidence that Mount played higher at his best, but out of possession he was routinely dropping deeper next to Jorginho whilst Kante pressed higher (the best example of this is the CL semi in 20/21 vs Real Madrid; Tuchel had Kante pressing Kroos high to slow Madrid's buildup with Mount making up the numbers in midfield. Personally I have very little doubt that he'll take to the role Eriksen was playing last year like a duck to water and be a colossal upgrade. I'm still gutted we're losing him and I think he'll genuinely be excellent for you.

We all enjoyed Tuchel's tika taka!

The bolded bit is my main concern with this transfer. I like Mount and think he's a much better player than many here are giving him credit for - but I can't help but worry that we're ultimately going to try to pigeonhole him into a role he's not a natural fit for, as we've done with many signings in the past.
Yeah, very difficult to see how both could play without us becoming massively unbalanced in the middle and I'd assume mount didn't come here to be a bench warmer for Bruno who as it stands is one of the first names on the team sheet.

It's fair to call out excessive moaning but one has to call it how he or she sees it .

I firmly back erik and have supported all of his transfer business prior to mount but there's a fine line between supporting the manager and just being a creepy cult like say Rawk tend to be and it's only logical to question how a mostly attack minded player who presumably is going to play in the same area as Bruno Fernandes and who even his most ardent lovers concede is not world class is going to fit into our team and whether he's worth the rather significant fee.

I hope he makes it work, and he probably already has plans of what he wants his midfield to look like but as it stands, it's a risky move.

I think the emphasis is team. Erik has a vision of how he wants his midfield 3 to operate and it has less to do with individual talents, much like the Liverpool midfield of a couple of years ago. I was initially not impressed with the idea of Mount and I admit I am nowhere near knowledgable enough to offer a serious opinion on him but it seems the area he really stands out in is his pressing stats. Erik seems to want to play Bruno and Mason as dual number 8's in front of Casemiro and he is looking for a ton of effort and hustle out of possession which is certainly something we have lacked in recent years. I am not convinced by everything Erik does, Antony so far is making Sancho look like a brilliant signing, but he does seem to know what he is doing most of the time.

I would sell Fred and McTominay because they are potentially saleable. Donny likely isn't. And we need to sell if we're to fill needs at other positions. Still with our record for sales I would be happy if we could sell either one honestly.

I would be happy to sell either too. But selling both would weaken us squad wise.

Don't agree, I think this puts even more weight on Casemiro in build up phase going forward. It is a huge money as well.

But hey, I hope my opinion will look like an absolute idiot and you will be correct.
That’s the thing isn’t it? Everyone who is massively underwhelmed by him would be delighted to have egg on their face come the end of the season.

We’re going to ruin Casemiro if this is our midfield solution, is my overwhelming thought.

We pay English players shitloads for doing nothing.
It's a shit deal as potentially I don't see Mount ever becoming a key player in a team likely to win premier league.
We do the same with non-English players. In fact, even more so.

My thoughts about this;
1) Caicedo /Rice - Case midfield duo would be too defensive and would struggle to dominate against most of teams. I am glad that we bought Mount instead any of those two.
2) Mount's price is ok. One year left or not, he is still under contract. So, for 55 mil we got 24 years old midfielder who was 2 times Chelsea player of the year, plays for NT, is home grown, is mobile, has silky touch and technique and scores goals. That is good business.
3) Creative midfielder was our 2nd priority after striker. Unbelievable how some of you, all of sudden, forgot that our only creative midfielder is Eriksen. Only one. And even he is not top class anymore.

I think that we should have spent money on classic mc (Kovacic) but still.....this is good signing. Lets buy Harry Kane now.:D

I see it the other way. Pressing high and condensing the space would help Casemiro a lot more than having Eriksen fading beside him after 60 minutes every week.
Surely having a player who covers and works harder than Eriksen can’t be worse on Casemiro

He played central midfielder under Tuchel?

Bolded part, you don't think Mount will play next to Casemiro?

I think the opportunity to play as a more flexible modern 8 is a big reason Mount wanted the move. Poch got a lot out of the players he had at the position at Spurs but they were traditional 8s iirc.

No, he played in a slow style with patient build up under Tuchel,
I just can’t see where you got Mount = counter attack relying on moments when the opposite would be true.

I don't. You don't spend 55 mil on a player to play him out of position. We will change system and play with no6 and two no8.

Btw; what is reaction of most of Chelsea fans? Happy? Unhappy? Meh?
