Mason Mount | Confirmed

Finally, just to get a new player in is so important. They wanted 70, we proposed 40 (which was never going to happen..) and we agreed on 60 so no real surprise. I want to see us keep moving with transfers. There are some v v good players around, and we should not always just look for 'young' players. You can use experienced players to compliment your squad, as we have done for many years (from Larsson to RVP).

Some excellent players around. Onana would bring some energy and 'legs' in there. But the forward line is what worries me. We need at least two.

Perhaps ETH’s obsession with Frenkie de Jong last summer was all about bringing home his real target this summer, Mason Mount.

Someone on Twitter said it and it's true; £250k/300k a week is the wage you might (a big might) consider if he arrived on a free. To give that on the back of a £55 million fee is astonishingly bad business.

I would say that Mount is the nicest guy out there. I doubt he even has to shave yet. The complete opposite of what you're saying.
You're completely missing the point I am making. I'm not saying he isn't "nice". I'm saying he has swagger. A lot of confidence. No cracking.Take this example against our very own as an example:

I think Mount’s success will depend largely on his chemistry with our existing players, particularly Casemiro and Bruno. He’s not the sort of star player who will stand out in any team you put him in, and who you know will instantly make an impact.

It may be that he turns out to be the perfect foil for Bruno, and in a year’s time we’ll be wondering how anyone could have doubted it. We should know within a few games of them playing together.

But even if he does prove a success, I think that objectively we’ve still overpaid for a guy with year left on his contract after his worst ever season. If he isn’t a success it will be yet another expensive mistake to add to the pile.

I've always rated Mount and the price is about in the current market. I think he'll be a success here.

Name one thing Mount does better than McTominay? Being w@nking fodder for Frank Lampard does not count by the way. I would put Mount on the same level as Donny and frankly I would rather we buy Garner back from Everton than pay actual money for this over rated show pony.

I have been behind this signing since it was first mentioned and I am delighted we have got our man and at such a reasonable price.

He's practically our player, so can we get behind him now, please?
This is Caf, you are asking too much, "getting behind the player" to many people here means "following manager decisions blindly" "being naive" etc.

We have too many people calling him a flop before he even kicked the ball, it is very sad.

Hopefully follow this up with resurgent pursuit of Lavia and I will genuinely be happier than if we had spunked the lot on Caicedo.

My fav thing about Mount is that he has some swagger, justified or not. I want good humans at this club but it also feels like we ve been a squad of too many nice guys. When you look at some of our most impactful players over the decades, they have all had a bit of that you can't touch me mentality. It that's part of the thinking with this transfer, then it makes more sense to me.
I can cut the delusion with a knife.

We've overpaid by a distance, saying we wouldn't meet directly and discuss and don't want to pay a 'United tax' which is exactly what we've done.
Yeah we should stick with the world beaters of Fred and Mctom. We haven’t overpaid at all. He’s 24, an England International and a bloody good player who will improve us and at half the price of Rice.

I'm using 'nice' in a negative sense - he has only been booked 36 times in 324 games. Suggesting he is a bit nasty isn't true.

Just ignore the pissy doubters, they should log off and find something else to do in their life. Just wasting everyone's time here.

Go get Edson Alvarez for cheap after his deal to Dortmund collapsed and this won't feel as such a bd transfer

He'll form a triangle with Shaw and Rashford.
When Rashford moves into the space between fullback and center back, mount can occupy the wide area and Shaw move central into midfield.
When Rashford hold the width either Shaw and or Mount can occupy the half space and the other deep.
We tend to progress the ball through the wide areas and having a midfielder like Mount who is comfortable deep, wide and in the advance half space creates dynamism.

If we can shift McFred and recoup 90% of that fee then I can stomach it a bit more.

ETH forced the club to massively overpay for Antony and now this.

I hope the club makes someone else responsible for selection of players and ETH only outlines the profile of the player required.

Oh I disagree with this assessment entirely. Also not sure why a player being booked infrequently despite elite defensive numbers for his position is bad?

Mount is absolutely a bit spiky and has no problem asserting himself or standing up to the opposition. He's by no means a shrinking violet.

He didn't force the club, club dilly dallied over the deal as per usual.

55 million is the going rate for someone of MM's skill level and age. Is what it is. Happy to have him. Still need a striker, another mid fielder and a keeper.

We ended up with Weghorst up front for half a season because we overpaid for Antony.

Mount looks good statistically, but he doesn't pass the eye test, like Van de Beek. It's hard not to get underwhelmed.
Back then, many were also shouting for a midfielder that can pass and control the midfield....
I dont understand this.. a lot of uncalled cynicism for Mount in this forum. Pool wanted this guy in their midfield before getting priced out. Arsenal got a lesser player for more money. Mason Mount is not underwhelming. The only issue with this signing is the priority for a midfielder is pretty low for us in this window in comparison to other positions. To go out and spend so much money in a position we don't have a dire need reeks of expected cluelessness from our board unless am mistaken and this is just a start of something big.

Hope to be proven wrong but I don't have any real expectation with this. We've signed Mount and funded Chelsea buying Caicedo. Feels like it should have been the other way around.

He played the exact same position as he will for us, for England during the WC and got dropped for Bellingham as fans were criticising his performances. He was garbage.

I don't understand posts like these. Is nobody allowed to question the transfer fee / wages or have concerns about what his role is going to be in the XI?
