Eriksen wasn't the midfielder he ideally wanted either. He wanted de Jong and when that didn't happen we changed tact and had to improvise by signing Casemiro. But I still believe he wants the connector in midfield who provides the craft and guile on the ball aswell as the ability to resist/evade pressure.
Do you think Rabiot is that connector in midfield? He's not like FDJ in term of passing but he has the ability to carry the ball.

It depends on Erik ten Hag and what his assessment of Kobbie Mainoo is. If he feels Mainoo isn't too far away from staking a claim for the role next to Casemiro then signing Rabiot on a free makes a lot of sense to bridge the gap in the short term until Mainoo is ready.

Alternatively you buy a player who will provide the craft, guile and press resistance next to Casemiro in a deeper role. I do want to see this midfielder turn up at United along with a goalkeeper.

The more I think about this the less I like it. He works hard and he can pass the ball a bit, but the figures mooted are just so much money for a guy who has played his best stuff as a #10.

It's certainly possible he becomes a better deep midfielder in his mid to late 20s, but this seems like a classic situation where a Prem player costs more than a better midfielder from elsewhere. I'd be way more excited if we spent 50M on Gravenberch.

Sorry but this one does not excite me for the price mentioned. Another midfielder in the vein of McTominay, Sabitzer, Donny or Eriksen where it is not exactly clear where to play and how to use him.
If the plan is to stick with Bruno at 10 and Casemiro as 6 we should go for a top class hard working and physical 8.
Someone like Fred, but who can actually pass.
Dropping our whole budget on Mount and Kane would be completely stupid and make us only marginally better.

On the plus side we could reuse the chant we have for Greenwood on this guy.

The problem with saying "He's like Park" is that when we had Park running around we mostly had Carrick, Scholes, Cristiano, Rooney and then another guy (Tevez, Giggs, Berba, Fletcher) so basically tons of quality but not a ton of graft and running (Rooney, Tevez and Fletcher from that group).

Right now, we have Bruno, Casemiro, Rashford, Antony and a new #9 penciled in as front 6 starters and then Eriksen and Garnacho presumably playing a ton too. You look at that group, and what's obviously lacking is composure on the ball (outside of Antony and Eriksen and Kane if we get him).

We don’t really need Parks in this team anyway. Not that Mount offers the same level of tenacity and engine as Park did. But you’re right - we had the class to go with his work rate (and quality too). Right now we don’t have the actual quality in the team which players like Mount will not solve.

Ffs please no

Massively overpriced and overrated. We are wasting big money on squad players.

I agree with that but what if actually there isn't one available. The availability of players depends on what we actually need. Do we need players that can be ready as starters or still in development stage like Pellistri?

It's so easy to say we should be able to find the hidden gems like Caicedo, Enzo, and etc. But are those type of players available, if they are available, are they ready to be our starter? When Brighton sign Caicedo, it took him a year and half until he gets a regular games time.
It's not easy because there are entire teams dedicated to this kinda work but I'll always maintain that it's a very doable job. Every year we see clubs ranging from small to big ones makes good deals, find good players at good prices.
If the people in charge of solving the equation involving the following parameters (price, wages, age, mentality etc etc..) aren't good at their jobs then it is a problem. Our football knowledge is limited, they're supposed to be pros with entire budgets dedicated for this.
If we're looking for a specific world class player and can't find him it's one thing but I still think there are other good deals to be made out there.

Regarding Mason Mount, we don't need a player of his profile IMHO, he's not savvy nor technically good enough to improve our team in terms of ball retention.

That's what Im saying, it's easy to just say it but in actual fact it's not easy to actually executing it. So in this scenario, may be there is no available deep-playmaker that fits the profile to play in starting XI.

I love that some people think this is the work of Brexit Jim

Well it can be interpreted that way TBH. Transfers cost a lot of money these days and there's FFP to take into account. Its not that outrageous to believe that any prospective owner would be involved into talks about major signings. On the flipside signings don't need to be signed now and transfers can be cancelled at the 11th hour

He's not as good as we need him to be. Maybe Ten Hag is going full-time inverted fullbacks. Sort of a 3241.

He's not. His best work has come on the left and right wing for us. When he's played deeper it generally hasn't worked out well.
Box to box is hard-working midfielder who have good all-round abilities, which makes them skilled to do both defending and attacking. I don't consider Box to box the same as defensive midfielder or deep-playmaker or those role that play in deep midfielder.

Everytime I watch Mount, I don't just consider where he plays but I consider what his talent is. His talent is an all round player that can defend and attack with good stamina. I see his talent in box to box role because he's an all round player that can do both defend and attack. He's not the kind of player that dictate the midfield or do playmaking role or dribbling like winger, he's in the team to provide support as all round player in defense and offense. To play box to box or getting the best out of Mount, 3 man midfield in 433 or 352 or 442 diamond will be the best system for him.

you can interpret it any way you want but it's clearly nonsensical to suggest SJR is dictating our transfer targets based on the fact they are English

christ alive so basically he offers nothing that we need, no dribbling, no play making just another pair of legs

Mainoo is probably like 4 years away from getting a proper shot at the first team I think, he’s only turned 18 a few weeks ago. I don’t think we will be giving much opportunities to youngsters in the upcoming years as we are trying to compete, Garnacho being an exception rather than norm.

The hysteria in this thread is really something. A lot of you are ready kick Ten Hag out if this rumour is true, eh? Wow.

If you look at it that way then pretty much. He's basically Thomas Muller, no playmaking and no dribbling. Offering good end of product, pair of legs, versatility, off ball movement, pressing, and link-up play. Mount and Muller are the player that we wish VDB will become but never become.

Playing Casemiro, Rabiot, and Bruno is fine to me but if we have Casemiro, Rabiot, and Mount then there is no playmaker in that midfield. However, I like our midfield options for next season if we end up with Casemiro, Rabiot, Eriksen, Bruno, and Mount. A defensive midfield, a ball carrier, two playmakers, and a box to box. There are different variety in those five as our midfield options next season. Pretty much Rabiot upgrades McFred while Mount upgrades Sabitzer and VDB. Those two additional in midfield is top quality upgrades from McFred, Sabitzer, and VDB
Improvements? Yes. Top quality? Not a chance imo. If we played a 433 and wanted Mount as the most attacking 8 or as a no.10 (if Bruno wasn't here) I could see the logic.

Our midfield would be better but at the end of next season I think we will still be questioning why we struggle to control games and how we need a deep playmaker/controlling midfielder next summer.

Its amazing he's made it as a pro footballer if he's that bad

Regardless who's our midfield, we will still struggle to control the game without ball playing keeper anyway.

Dictating is taking it very very far. That's not what I said

Really hope we don't sign Mount. We'll end up having to spend a fortune.
We have other more important priorities like a striker and a goalkeeper.

ETH still thinks he is at Ajax, we need much better if we want to challenge for the league title at some point.

This would be such a bizarre waste of money when we’re rumoured to have a limited transfer budget. He’s not even the right profile of midfielder we need either.

I always thought if he had a Spanish football education. He'll have been utilized as a Pedri/Iniesta sort of midfielder. He can dribble explosively in tight spaces to transition attack and very good with the little give an go alongside his immense work rate and goal scoring.
If we add him and Rabiot that will be an improvement to the likes of Donny/Sabitzer and Mcsause.
In big games I can see us playing a Rabiot, Casemiro pairing with Mount in front of them and Fernandes on the right. We'll be better against the top 8 that we struggle against away from home that way.

We've engaged on this topic in another thread, but it's easier to say "I don't know anyone, so there isn't anyone". I personally will wager we will sign 2 midfielders this summer and one will fit the mould of a deeper, ball progressing midfielder.

What the feck

I didn’t think this link was actually serious. With the amount of issues in our team spending 55m on Mason Mount would be a real clanger
Most teams will tell
Him to stay for 6 months and then he’s £25m which is currently what he’s worth, I would argue based on last season that McTominay value is higher. Don’t see it, it’s clear we need some homegrown talent, Jacob Ramsey and Maddison are far better right now.

Ok so Mount costs you £60m plus £12m per wages and Rabiot £14m per year wages so amortised at £36m per year on your accounts - wages for Mctominay £6m, Sabitzer £8m, DVB £6m so £20m wages and we sell Mctominay for £30m (Profit of £30m) and DVB for £15m (Canx Contract) Probably means we have +£14m benefit on yearly FSP accounts and solve HG now replace Rabiot for M Caciedo who you buy for £90m on 5+1 £15m amortised cost plus much lower wages of £7m per year so £22m cost per year against Rabiot Signing in fee which will be £20m over 5 years plus wages £14m equals £18m amortised, I’d take the 21 year old Caciedo all day long for the extra £4-5m per year.

I get your point. I just wanted to mention another side of the equation, the fact that fans are not all clued in the market of players doesn't mean anything

Is Ole still at the club? Talk about building from the back and this summer is going to be story after story on Rice, Kane and Mount joining United.

Building from the back starts with the keeper and back 4.
