Chelsea have picked a really “strange” i.e. wrong player to make whatever point they are trying to make. Kovacic is being gifted to City. For Havertz who they bought for a lot of money they have accepted the bid. But their own academy player who is making peanuts (wages) and who cost them zero transfer fee and has 1 year left, they are making everything unnecessarily difficult for him.
Unfortunately my targets end up going to other clubs after I start the hype well in advance. Caicedo, Guimaraes and Tchoumeni etc..

So we're £10m apart, with Chelsea open to further negotiations. Another £5m-ish probably gets this done. One of our primary targets over the line, in time for pre-season and yet everyone is demanding we walk away. I get some don't fancy the player (he wasn't top of my list either), but imagine this exact situation happened last year with FDJ and the board played chicken over these amounts.

The fact that Macalister & Kovacic went for around £35 mil and we’re sat here still negotiating for Mount with a year left on his contract at £55/60 mil shows how incompetent we are. £40 mil should have been our take it or leave it offer, not our starting point.

You are assuming we we valued him at £55m. This was our third offer, a rare occasion where I think we have been quick and generous with out bids. Chelsea signed Sterling last summer with a year left on his contract for much less than they are asking for Mount. An Sterling wasnt coming off a shocking season. He is worth no more than £50m, above £60m is madness. Especially when he isn't a crucial position for us this summer.
Salah wasn't their first choice, but at that juncture, United didn't have many other options. Not sure another left-footed winger/forward was available or identified with the coaching setup and scouting setup to really impact the team in a positive way. Antony was an overpay, totally, but feel like he can come good. Ajax also hurt themselves by dragging it out.
And I don't agree with the January window, as there just weren't any CFs of requisite quality available. Gakpo didn't play as a CF and was okay, nothing to write home about. United got 3rd place and a cup, and another cup final even with Wout, don't think much would have changed.

Shouldn't mean we caved. Chelsea have offered to meet in person to resolve the issue. So there is a clear indication from all 3 parties to get this done. As per few tweets, they didn't reject the bid, they have countered with new offer and also offered to meet in person to come to agreement. This one should be done quickly.

Caqueret is so lightweight and can be had if the club were truly interested, same for other clubs looking at better value players.
There should be more talent players, but how they all fit together and within a position based system across the PL and CL under EtH remains to be seen. I'd trust EtH, the coaches, and Murtough on understanding who their targets are and saying okay, we have access to these players and these are the fall back players. I think Mount fits well with what EtH is trying to do and it does help he's a very good English player, for a club that has been known to trust and play young, talented English players.
So the £55m transfer fee now goes to the player instead of to the club that owns him, is that what you're suggesting? Why amortize the transfer fee into his salary? I doubt he's on £200k/week even if we do sign him this window instead of next. He's not "proven" in the way that Casemiro was. I certainly hope we're not starting him at £200k/week, at least!
This. It's a blatant overpay. The fact we scored the market and came up with £60m for Mount being the best way to spend our money makes me shudder to think what else we have in store. We don't have an unlimited budget either unlike some other clubs.

It seems like ten Hag wants a central player who can go from the middle third to the final third and have the intelligence to press effectively in tandem with the rest of the team. And that is what Mount provides along with being quick and agile.
Mount isn't a alternative to a deeper lying midfielder.
And I do believe the club will sign a player to occupy a deeper role in midfield as well. And this player will be someone who will be comfortable operating in the defensive third in possession as well as having the game to advance into the middle third and connect with the advanced central and wide attackers.
And hopefully Onana or another capable keeper in possession will provide the free man option in the build up phase which will hopefully make our build up smoother from deeper areas and result in the game being played in the opponent's half with the press and counter press as another weapon to break the opponent down without the ball.

People should also note that what we do or do not do here sets a precedent for us for the remainder of the summer - get bent over for Mount and the price of every other player we go in for goes up heftily, too.
