Forgetting about Mount for a minute (we won't) which do you think Erik's system needs more out of

Mobile strong 8
Press resistant playmaker 8

Maybe you feel we need both which is also a valid answer as well
Both and it's of equal importance.

Fred and Eriksen occupy both of those roles currently and neither are good enough if we want to challenge for the title.

Go big on Caicedo and try and get Mount on a free next season.

Make use of Bruno in CM in some games if we have to and try and use Amad and Sancho more in the advanced role. Not ideal but it saves us getting ripped off.

This point probably deserves a new thread, but it’s without any doubt the case that we dropped points not because we conceded too many goals, but because we scored too few goals.

We conceded 43 goals (PL) which includes the 7-0 and 6-3 thrashings, which is the same number of goals Arsenal conceded and 10 more goals City conceded, but where the wheels fell of the bus was in attack: we scored only 58 goals, which compares poorly to Arsenal at 88 and City at 94.

Some say we need a striker above all else, others say an 8 to help Bruno create the good chances we arguably did a poor job of. Others say to improve our attack we really need a modern keeper, which is insane but the hysteria over De Gea is what it is, but whatever the right answer is we definitely need a 9 and/or 8 more than we need a backup 6. But if we can do them all (which is not likely) let’s go for it. But we did not drop points because of a lack of cover for Casemiro. We dropped points because our front line — Martial, Antony and Sancho — badly underperformed reasonably modest expectations, and I would add that Eriksen degraded as the season wore on.
Exactly this. We need to score more goals.

It’s pretty obvious this deal is going to happen no matter what. It makes zero sense for all parties to not go ahead with it.

The truth is any homegrown player who is actually good enough to improve your first eleven or squad is going to cost more than you would pay for a similar non homegrown player. We’ve all got our views on Mount, but the truth is there isn’t a large pot of home grown talented players to choose from. Mount is one of the better ones. We have to be conscious of the homegrown quota.

It isn't be the price itself I would have any issue with. If you'd asked me before the summer what Mount would go for I'd have guessed £50-55m, so paying slightly more than that doesn't mean anything.

It's the fact that (via Simon Stone and others) the club communicated that this was to be their final offer. And in the long run failing to stick to that sort of messaging in negotiations is a big problem.

Just leave it. There's no way we should be paying 65M for Mount. I don't care what Ten Hag thinks. Lay out the red carpet and get Kane and Mount signed up on a free for next season.

Walk away, please. Mount is a good player, but not the missing piece. Get him and Kane on a free next summer and we’re good to go for a title challenge the 2024/25 season.

Kane is worth paying for now

If Mount really want United, he can ran down his contract and join us on free. He can give him a sign on bonus since we save big on transfer. I wouldn't pay what Chelsea want. I believe if non English team put in a bid, Chelsea will probably accept as they don't want a rival to get Mount. Forget it, we should move to other target. Chelsea is buying players with crazy and they expect other teams to pay crazy money for their players. I pray miss top 4 again to punish their new owner for being an idiot.

I don’t think they would pay the sort of money we are offering. I think Liverpool were interested but probably at around £30m or so. Once they realised that Chelsea wanted much more, they moved in and signed MacAllister for £37m
Pretty sure it's 35m going up to 55m. So roughly what Mount could potentially cost.

And no way did Liverpool think Mount could be got for 30m.

Mount should walk into Poch's office and tell them to fuk right off....just sell me for a reasonable price and let us both move on

Not really fan of this view, if we move on, I'd rather we move on fully from them and not waste another year in hope we get them for free because anything could change between now and then. Also, Mount may well be good option for a free as he's still young, but Kane will be 31. He may still do a job, but not for long. We need better younger world class signings to take us to that level.

50M base + 6M in add ons. Leave it on the table for Chelsea to decide, while letting Mason know we'll get you on a free, same personal terms. If he's willing to transfer at any cost, then let it be known and we'll get you before the window closes even if it's not ideal timing.

But United cannot keep caving into stupid demands when they aren't bidding against anyone else. The Bayern rumor is total bullshit, just media shit stirring.

Okay, let’s see which one of us is right in the next few weeks, won’t pay an extra few mill for Mount but we’ll pay 80+ for Caicedo who is a different type of player. It seems more obvious we’re pushing the name because he’s Chelsea’s target. We’re not going for Mount because we have an unlimited pot of cash
Right about what? My point is Mount’s a poor signing. He’s just not a high quality player.

feck Chelsea and get Caicedo instead who’s ironically Chelsea’s number one target, bring in Rabiot on a free as well then continue talks with Mount’s agent to sign him in January or on a free next summer.

We should do the same with Kane, sign a striker this summer like Hojlund then get Kane on a free next summer therefore giving ourselves strength in depth but also showing we refuse to be pushed around anymore and save ourselves a fortune.

I hope ManUtd walk away like we should have and call their bluff. Chelsea should not be able to get away with this insanity. You anyway get the player for free next year. While one can question why arsenal wanted Havertz but with him it seems they paid so much and Arteta really wanted him so they got lucky and he had 2 yrs to go so they had some leverage. But this after the player said he would walk away for free this is just insanity.
They would be getting 120m-130m for these two.

(I am still angry Arsenal are paying so much for Havertz)
Spot on.

Might want to look at Rabiot thread for update, would be prepared to wait for Mount on free but should go big for Kane now

EtH also needs to understand that if United are to be better and more efficient with their budgets, he has to be prepared to stand firm on our offers as a club for transfers. If that means missing out on players because selling clubs are nickel and diming, so be it. Short term pain for long term gain.

And we risk pissing Ten Hag off?

Ten Hag doesn't always have to be right. As a club we should be targeting a wider range of players than just Erik's obsessions. Even Ten Hag didn't think Casemiro would be as good as he is for us, the guy isn't foolproof. Relying on managers for all of your targets is how you end up with Liverpools recent issues after they chased all of Klopps favorites.

We could stack 20m on the Mount money at this point and make a serious push for Caicedo.

It’s really not hard to figure out who watches football and who runs with fanciful narratives on this forum. Where to even begin with this post…

I've seen enough of Mount to form an opinion. So if you are claiming that I don't watch football, then that is actually the fanciful narrative.

He was outstanding at his best. Way above decent. He’s a player that opposition fans didn‘t really pay attention to because he didn’t have the flashy highlights that midfielders like Foden or Bellingham have had which the media slobber over.

A lot of people have this uninformed idea that Mount is just all energy and is a “try hard” who isn’t particularly great at anything. A “passion merchant” I’ve seen him called. But his touch, dribbling, and general technical ability are excellent.

I saw him at his best and Lingard at West Ham was a similar type of player. He operated well around the box, some good link up, some nice footwork/dribbling, moving advanced of the CF to score goals etc, but I never thought he was a genuinely a top level player. I don't think his technical ability is excellent at all, compare him with a truly excellent player like De Bruyne and there is a clear difference in quality.

I think a lot of that is because Mount isn't the sort of player who thrives in international settings - he's not really an individualistic player. He's someone who will help a tactically sophisticated team execute better - I'd argue he's a ceiling-raiser and not a floor-raiser (and thus his struggles this year in a dysfunctional team aren't shocking).

Where have I heard this before? Mkhitaryan, Kagawa, Van de Beek. I said the same thing about all of these players, who also looked equally good elsewhere.

If you’ve decided he’s been “poor for a while” based on watching a handful or so of his matches you might have a future in scouting

I've only watched a handful of matches? Look at his stats for last season. I saw enough of Chelsea/Mount playing ducal (and enough of him being sat on the bench) to see he wasn't playing well or having a good season.

They could sign him up on a free in 6months.
Never understand why people talk about pre-contracts like they're relevant to anything.

If we don't sign him now he won't play a game for us until August 2024. That's a lot more than 6 months.

Yeah this is why we need the new owners to bring in a better recruitment team with negotiators who won't be fecked around

Lingard's form at West Ham was a brief and obviously unsustainable purple patch. Comparing Mount to that is silly, he's generally a better player than Lingard by quite a massive amount.

We could but only need to read between the lines of those Mount tweets to see we aren't going anywhere even though we should

Basically nobody wants Utd to sign Mount for that price. There's no pressure on the club to sign him. If we really want him we can easily wait a year. If we want to overspend on a player with 1 year left on his contract ffs just go and spend the extra money on Kane, because he will genuinely make a major difference for us. Beyond the fee being ridiculous, setting an ultimatum and going back on it will completely feck us for the rest of the window.

Time to walk, like has been said before United need to stop over paying for every player.

£50 million was fair. Tell Mount they will come back for him in Jan or next season.

Plenty more holes in the team to fix in the meantime.

Switch the focus to a CF + GK.

Chelsea’s ownership really is as bad as us under Woodward. It’s like they are learning on the job.

Remember when we walked away from Perisic over 5£m and got Alexis in January instead.

My guess is that they think we are bluffing and don't have a plan B. Which could very well be true. And worrying in its own right.

They’ve just recouped over £100m for players that weren’t even in the new manager’s plans. Sounds like they’re pretty good at business even if they’ve made some super dumb mistakes at times.

Look at the impact of going all in for the number 1 target. Instead of walking away and getting someone else than Antony, we paid 85m for him. In January we were then too broke to get a forward then there we were with weghorst. It's been said a few times but Salah wasn't Liverpool's 1st choice.

The more we pay for Mount the less legroom we have for other signings. Chelsea know it and are playing hardball to restrict our capacity in the market.

Why do people so easily assume that Mount (or any free player) will join us next year, no matter what? That is not good planning.

What we should do is identify several alternatives to Mason Mount and approach them simultaneously to keep Chelsea on their toes. To name a few, there is Daichi Kamada, Gio Reyna, and James Maddison.

Most underwhelming signing since Matic and the price would be insane. Crazy we're literally we're paying Chelsea to go buy a much better player in Caicedo.
