Paying that sort of money for a mediocre player like Mount is absolute insanity clubs gone mental. What a joke, don't care how much ETH wants him walk the feck away.

I thought he'd go to Liverpool for around £35m this season, he'd suit their high energy midfield. Instead they get McAllister for 30m and we're going to pay £65m for him? Crazy stuff.
We didn't overpay for Sancho. We would have overpaid if we'd bought him the prior summer for what Dortmund were asking.

But 70odd million for a player who was double-digit goals and assists for three seasons in a top league and still eligible for Young Player Of The Season? Worth it.

His not working out so far does not mean the numbers he put up didn't warrant the outlay.

Maguire? Yeah by 20m. Antony? Around 20m overpay too. Should have been Havertz to Arsenal like figure.

It was an overpay for those who watched him. I watched him regularly and regularly he said he was not worth that much, there's a lot of outlying reasons for those stats (which I've mentioned before in other threads). It's a testament that no other well run club was in for Sancho at that price.

We definitely have a habit of vastly overpaying on good but not great players. Someone or a group of people in our scouting / team is doing a very poor job.

And we risk pissing Ten Hag off?

He’s not a mediocre player, he’s a definite upgrade on Eriksen, but the context surrounding this deal means we should walk the hell away and explain to Mount’s people that we’ll offer a pre-contract on Jan.

Add a bit more to Rabiot’s offer and then get Caicedo.

I’d rather shit in my hands and applaud City’s treble.

I knew it that Chelsea will reject the third bid and ask for more because of our club bidding for a third time!!! The 45+5 (2nd bid) should have been the final offer and United should have just waited for Chelsea to cave in first!! Mount made it clear that he no intentions of singing a new deal which should have given United a strong position, because of that third bid Chelsea knew that they could push the envelope and ask for more!!!

I hope this time United walk away and tell Chelsea it's 50+5 or nothing

Maybe he should be going after higher quality players that people wouldn’t mind overpaying for.
With what money? We’ll just pluck some out of thin air should we. Lets sign Caicedo, Kane, Costa, KMJ etc

He'll get pissed off regardless, you think our board will get in signings early? Not in a zillion years. I think he knows he's working for a club that is not ran well anyways

Rather sign any single one of them instead of an average player who doesn’t even improve the starting 11.

It’s pretty obvious this deal is going to happen no matter what. It makes zero sense for all parties to not go ahead with it.

The truth is any homegrown player who is actually good enough to improve your first eleven or squad is going to cost more than you would pay for a similar non homegrown player. We’ve all got our views on Mount, but the truth is there isn’t a large pot of home grown talented players to choose from. Mount is one of the better ones. We have to be conscious of the homegrown quota.

What does he want, for us to be treated like mugs on every transfer and get ripped off despite having a limited budget? Mount isn't even that good.

This bid being turned down + Rabiot staying at Juve is looking like disaster for our midfield plans.

Okay so we sign one of these and then what? What about the rest of our summer

Hopefully a lesson that we need to plan for transfer windows. It’s been 10 years of shit planning, we bring it on ourselves.

This is true. Mount is at his best picking up positions between the lines/final third and playing on the half turn making quick incisive passes. That doesn't mean he won't drop back to link play now and then, but he's not going to be setting the tempo or anything like an Eriksen might have done.

Right. Thats the point. Eriksen is deployed in a DM role alongside Casemiro with an AM ahead, 2 wingers and a striker.

Mount doesnt play there for Chelsea. But if he did its a role that emphasises keeping the ball, passing and making good choices of when to be more risky. Those are areas that are questionable vs other AMs such as Maddison, Bruno etc. let alone Eriksen who is certainly better at that stuff. So the idea that our starting lineup is a lot better because Mount is better than Eriksen doesnt make a lot of sense, unless we change formation to make it happen and he plays more of the role he plays at Chelsea. Playing the role Eriksen plays as our 2nd DM he is unlikely to be much better.

No club in the world will offer more than we have.

Tell Chelsea the offer remains on the table but there will be no increase.

Romano has literally said Caicedo is our alternative so if you’re lucky you can see your hypothetical play out in real life.

Lots and lots of drama queens in this thread. Expert negotiators too.

We’ve offered 55 incl addons, Chelsea want 65. Clearly we’ll settle at around 60. Probably 55 plus 5. Or thereabouts.

It’s a great deal for a 24 year old England international, PL proven, twice Chelsea player of the year, in a position we want to improve, and as the player ETH wants the most.

I am happy to be alone in my excitement over this transfer. Mount is a great player with a fantastic engine. He’ll improve us a lot in midfield. A Casemiro, Mount, Bruno midfield is aggressive, high energy, technical, and very forward thinking. I like this transfer a lot.

Must-have transfer might exist, but not every one can be one. If managers like Pep can suck up missing out on players like Kane, ETH will have to forego his favoured choices sometimes too.

That said, the other side of that coin is that if the second choice we move on to is an inferior version of that Mount style attacking #8 then the people who wanted us to move on for the sake of a few million can't really complain either. Moving on from your first choice will often mean getting a worse player, so you have to suck that up too.

Yeah dreadful night for us isn't it

Signing their main target instead would be the most incredible feck you to Chelsea. Mount joining for free next year as the cherry on top.

If we don't learn from our past mistakes and stop letting teams rinse us for bang average players we are doomed.

I fear they're going to make us look like fools over this.

Okay, let’s see which one of us is right in the next few weeks, won’t pay an extra few mill for Mount but we’ll pay 80+ for Caicedo who is a different type of player. It seems more obvious we’re pushing the name because he’s Chelsea’s target. We’re not going for Mount because we have an unlimited pot of cash

I hope ManUtd walk away like we should have and call their bluff. Chelsea should not be able to get away with this insanity. You anyway get the player for free next year. While one can question why arsenal wanted Havertz but with him it seems they paid so much and Arteta really wanted him so they got lucky and he had 2 yrs to go so they had some leverage. But this after the player said he would walk away for free this is just insanity.
They would be getting 120m-130m for these two.

(I am still angry Arsenal are paying so much for Havertz)

That midfield still lacks cover for Casa and that player who can progress the ball from deep

Just walk away...

Need to set a new precedent early in this window and Chelsea are having a right laugh expecting £60M+ for a wantaway, who was frozen out of their squad, with with a year left on his deal...

They wanted 70 and we made an opening bid of 40 and our third bid has taken us to middle ground when a deal is normally struck in transactions.
We did not take the piss with our first offer but they are taking it now when we should be pulling the reins in this deal.

I get the homegrown point but still, United made 3 offers, the third one is not small fee at all, Chelsea know that we will cave hence why they just rejected it and countered with a higher figure (+10m), United should walk away at this point, because Chelsea will not throw away a 50+5 on the table and keep an unhappy player that they will lose for free next summer

£65 million for Mount, a Chelsea squad player. Never change, United.

People still think we can sign 2 midfielders, 2 strikers and a goalie this window after blowing over half our transfer budget on Mount, and only gaining 1m in sales. Dreamland.
The 100 million that's our budget shouldn't necessarily be interpreted as a flat 100m.

Transfer market is just insane! Everyone seems able to command massive fees even for their cast-offs.

I mean you have Chelsea looking to get over £130m for Mount and Havertz! It’s a fecking joke!
