Apparently he’s not in the matchday squad according to the Mirror.
Think that midfield lacks a bit of creativity, especially when we're guaranteed 70-80% of the ball. Id move Alexis into the 10 with Fellaini and Fred as 2 8's. Don't rate Periera at all. Then a front 3 of Lingard, Lukaku and Greenwood. The front 3 can rotate between being a flat 3 with two wide players or a triangle with Lingard coming in behind Lukaku and Greenwood playing as a 2. Loads of flexibility thereI'd be amazed if any of them start. Fellaini, Fred and Pereira in midfield. Jesse, Lukaku, Sanchez in attack. They all need games.
I'd expect Gomes and Greenwood to get 20-25 minutes off the bench.
Fred / Pereira both intercept pretty well.Who is the Busquets or Fernandinho in our midfield 3 though? I'm happy to see Pereira and Fred there, but Gomes as well? You're asking for trouble.

We used to play a 442 with Anderson / Cleverley, i'm sure they'll manage.
Ole outApparently he’s not in the matchday squad according to the Mirror.
If true its abit of a shame but Greenwood will get his chance at some point, maybe not this season though.Apparently he’s not in the matchday squad according to the Mirror.

Until it's officially announced,I'm not believing The MirrorApparently he’s not in the matchday squad according to the Mirror.
They wouldntThey'd cut through that midfield like a hot knife to butter.

Or maybe see how they do first, to save against a massive overreaction sack him at halftime instead. If Ole tries to play that midfield he should be sacked on the spot.
There's not a single competent tackler in that midfield, you can't play a midfield without someone competent defensively, it's just fantasy. They wouldnt

Poor that he’s not in the squad. First poor decision by Ole, he was due one.
It isn't really. If it was the League Cup, sure but this is a serious chance at silverware which Ole will almost certainly go full out in order to win.
He has been offered a good chance to rotate here andagrt some players some much needed rest or minutes. Full scale throwing kids in ala Carabao Cup games was never on the cards for this one.
Gomes and Chong will probably be the two youngsters involved. Maybe Roshaun Williams if we want some CB cover.
Gomes isn’t even in the squad. Martial, Lukaku, Rashford, Sanchez isn’t needed against Reading. Rashford should have been rested completely for this.
It is for match sharpness. Like I said, Ole will want to win this and won't be taking any chances. As he shouldn't.
Rashford won't see the pitch if the rest of those who need the minutes perform as expected.
Just think it was the perfect chance to give Greenwood a tiny little taste of what he can get, won’t have another chance this season in all likelihood.
I know where you are coming from for sure, there were rumours he picked up a knock (for what it's worth).
If we have any dead rubbers towards the end of the season or we get another Championship side or lower, providing he is fit he may get a chance then. It certainly won't be the last opportunity this year.
Well the knock may well explain it. Will be nice to hopefully see Chong get a debut, I don’t see why we need Fellaini and McTominay though ahead of Gomes.
On the Giuseppe Rossi scale for unders, how good is Greenwood?
I dislike Jose as much as the next person but every half decent midfield in the world has a competent defensive player in there.,
Jose, is that you?
Dont agree atall with regards to tomorrows game, Theres more than enough to beat reading. We played Pereira, Fred and Pogba in midfield against Leicester at old trafford, we won, so which one of that trio was the competent one defensively? That was against a decent premier league team, Reading are a poor championship team so changing Pogba for Gomes should still give us plenty enough to win on saturday.
Theres no point talking bout giving lads a chance if we'r not goin to trust them in games like this, the team i said id like to see had two young lads, surrounded by hundreds of millions worth of talent, and people dont think they could beat Reading at home, unbelievable.

I think Rossi is the best player seen for us at that level in decades - he was just insanely good. Is Greenwood in that kind of class? He is certainly up there.
Glenn Roeder has a lot to answer for. Mind you, we should never have loaned him out in the 06/07 season. We had Rooney, Saha and Solskjaer coming off of a 2 year lay off to play upfront with Smith still a question mark as to if he could play at all, let alone be back that season.
Puzzling.
Reading have a poor season but they aren't a 6h Division side like Woking .....we don't need a replay.Gomes isn’t even in the squad. Martial, Lukaku, Rashford, Sanchez isn’t needed against Reading. Rashford should have been rested completely for this.

Players like De Gea, Pogba, Rashford, Matic, Lingard or Shaw should be rested........Sanchez and Lukaku are needing 60-70 minutes......Martial at least on the bench.
We would lose with players like Greenwood, Chong, Gomes or Garner in the starting XI.

It looks like good finishing from him in the clips amidst some atrocious defending. Really hard to get a read on the level of play from the clips.
Yeah, Rossi looked like a world class player in the making, and would have gone on to be one if his knees weren't made out of balsa wood. So unfortunate.Rossi took the piss at that level. I remember 2004-2006 and he had one season whereby you'd check the score knowing that he had probably bagged a couple.
Greenwood is like that now, albeit a level below where Rossi was doing it. He needs another 6-18 months before we can start saying anything definitively.
If we move the ball fast enough it won't matter if they're 6'5 giants.
Barca's midgets and City with Silva x2 seem to manage fine.

Just curious because that's like the platinum standard and if any young player even gets to gold, they're doing well.
I really want to see this kid in our first squad, hopefully getting a few games, but from the sounds of what you're saying, there's a ways to go before he'll be in serious contention?
the kid has it. You don’t need to watch him for another 12 months to tell that. The movement and level of finishing he shows won’t just go away. A hat trick against the best u18 team in the country shows he can do against better opposition.Rossi took the piss at that level. Not changing the goal posts...just giving you an example of a midfield containing two of the players i mentioned plus one whos biggest critisism is his defensive effort, winning a premier league game when you stated it was fantasy to be able to do so, apparently even against the likes reading...basically proving that its not fantasy for teams to be capable of winning a game of football without a defensive lynch pin in the midfield. And thats what we'r talking about here, one game against championship relegation fodder.I dislike Jose as much as the next person but every half decent midfield in the world has a competent defensive player in there.
We also played that midfield against Brighton and got slaughtered. You can give them a chance just not in a midfield that wouldn't work, I'd be all for playing Gomes if he was alongside two regulars, not two bench players. That's just a recipe for failure. Dunno what you're bringing Pogba up for, I said the midfield of Gomes - Fred - Pereira wouldn't work, you're just shifting the goalposts.
Totally agree there! If you went back to 2006/07, I used to be lurker on here. I remember the Rossi threads, I remember also watching MUTV. The hype was real. Rossi was outstanding! He was a certainty to male it here. Barring injuries, he had a decent career. But like Wilson and others he was the blue eyed hope of the time.I think Rossi is the best player seen for us at that level in decades - he was just insanely good. Is Greenwood in that kind of class?

Do you honestly think a midfield of fred, pereira and gomes couldnt handle reading?
We'v also played midfields full of apparent defensive nouse this season, too many times, and theyv been ripped apart time and time again aswel.
Dosnt look like we'l find out anyways, dosnt look like gomes is in the squad unfortunatly.
