Mason Greenwood

My plan for this season:

Sack Jose now and appoint Carrick/McKenna as caretaker managers until end of season

And play Rashford, Greenwood and Martial as our attacking three.

Why not.

Wouldn't be against this. He couldn't do any worse than Lukaku has this season anyways.

Alright, all you guys make great points about his technique and finishing. I feel though that a striker's position is the hardest position to graduate into from youth setup. Most big clubs will prefer to buy a ready-made striker than promote a 17 year old.

Does he actually have a dominant foot or is he truly ambidextrous? Either way, his finishing is superb with both.

Seems like he will intentionally score a goal or two with one leg for a match and then switch over to the other leg in the next match. Sky Bet out to have a bet on which is his preferred leg.

I'd love that to be the line up for the game against Cardiff (assuming Martial is fit to start).

Lukkaku has been pants this season and although he could be forgiven for being misused as a target man by Jose, his touch and movement were pathetic for a professional. Lingard and Mata have been used in a front 3 by various managers, but they have sevre limitations and are best when operating between midfield and attack

I'd start with Martial-Rashford-Greenwood (left to right), with the flank players operating as inside forwards and using full backs to provide the width when needed.

Rather than the traditional get jt out eife, beat a devender a d cross apprroach to attacks, we can use these 3 as fluid players with regular interchanging of positions, dribbling and the use of pace and movement to take on the defence. Bring on Chong and a returning Sanchez could alliviate our need for new signings up front under this approach.

Whatever happens, get Greenwood in the team for Sat, he has more than deserved it

He shouldn't go on a loan. Looks talented enough already to be slowly introduced to first-team football for us this season.

I can believe that. Especially with Macheda and Januzaj

I saw an interview with Macheda reasonably recently where he pretty much admitted he stopped trying. He'd made such a sudden impact he thought he'd get by, and coasted. When he went out on loan he didn't apply himself, and it cost him when he returned the club.

We should loan him out to the Bundesliga or Eredivisie if the former is too strong. Lad needs playing time at a good level week in week out.

Can certainly see the RVP comparisons. But it's like a fast forward version.

Would love to see him get a chance soon.

Rossi's goalscoring record was better than anyone we have had in last 20+ years.

He played two seasons in our juniors/reserves and scored over 30 goals in each season. Blake, Campbell, Keane and others come nowhere near that number.
If it's not too much trouble, are there actual stats for him?

I was wondering this too, but I couldn't find any for Rossi. Stats in general for youth games are very tricky to get hold of. I do have transfermarket stats for our youth team for the last few seasons though.

If he does it this season and then next season in the Reserves then he will be in the Rossi category in terms of output.

Rossi was elevated into the Reserves much quicker though.

Greenwood has all the capability to surpass Rossi's record...but going back in time, loads of young strikers were scoring 40+ goals a s season as the norm.

What’s your gut feeling on him? I’ll be honest, I’m a rubbish scout and get overexcited whenever a new prodigy pops up. I really thought Rossi and later on,Wilson, would find their feet in the first team so I’m tentative about believing the hype but he really does look a step up.

Away from the highlight reels, what’s the feeling about him?

I think he is more likely to get games under Ole considering he's both left and right footed, to play as inside forward instead of a winger on the right flank as Liverpool do with Mane and Salah. Ole will want inside forward player comfortable with shoot using both feet.

I think what excites me about Greenwood is just that he rarely does a mistake. It's very similar to Mbappe in that whatever he's trying to pull off, there is high quality attached to it. Think the Chelsea match (not fa youth cup) was the only match where I felt things weren't coming off for him.

Don't bring Mbappe to Greenwood level, Greenwood is in another league at the same age as Mbappe, even at 17 where Greenwood is taking the piss of Juve, City, Chelsea twice, etc in youth, scoring a lot of goals and assist, Mbappe don't have the same number stats as him, not comfortable with two foots as Greenwood. Mbappe is comfortably ahead of him but in the few years, Greenwoods can do it much better than him if it going well for him when he'll break through.

If Greenwood can transform his footballing into senior for United in PL and other competition, he'll be the real deal, thank god we have him.

I wish I had your optimism. I was burned by believing in Morrison and then Januzaj. I'll wait til I see it. I remember watching Morrison's game against Liverpool in the youth cup when he changed the game. People always went on about his technique but he was like a magnet for the ball, everything went through him.

Mbappe just does everything with quality. He has sneaky good technique, his crosses are great, etc....

Wow that is like Rooney level of goal scoring feat in academy. He should not be loaned.

Oh. There are 2 Mason Greenwood threads. I'll post this video here too. He got a hattrick vs Chelsea. He's a special talent.

I have no details on assists as those things weren't counted at the time. But the following is data about his two years in the club when he arrived in 2004.

2004/05

Apps 36 Goals 27

He only played 3 games in the U/18's and was deemed too good so was elevated into the Reserves immediately. He scored 4 goals in 3 games for the Juniors.

2005/06

Apps 28 Goals 30

I am not including his goals for the first team.

2006/07

Apps 2 Goals 4

He went on loan to Newcastle and then Parma for most of the season.

Totals

Apps 66 Goals 61

Quality across the board.

Is it possible to compare him with Ravel at the same stage?

To date Mason is the only one who has excited me as much

Different type of players in some ways but very similar in others.

Technically Morrison was the better player at that age and controlling things from deep or from the #10 role...gliding past people. Greenwood plays more up front and cuts in from wide positions.

Greenwood is more two footed and quicker but Morrison read the game better and was more mature...more of a team player.

Morrison could make the ball sit up and talk...Greenwoods eye for goal is outstanding.

Two brilliant youth prospects...let's hope Mason turns his potential into being a quality first team player.

Thanks, great assessment.

I always though Morrison was such a talented playmaker but Greeenwood's two footedness is something I haven't seen at this level in.... well ever
