People really want Greenwood to flop so bad that they are rewriting history. GW was wayyyyy ahead of hojlund even mentally. This idea that he wasnt progressing is another lie that is being repeated over and over again. He was young and growing into this RW role, its normal to have dips...but he was definitely our best attacker by the time he got suspended. In that whole season, except for ronaldo, he was the shining light.

GW isnt even really a RW...he was a CF and a very good one at that. He joined a first team where we really needed a RW and he could deliver from there better than our other options and so we shoe horned him there...and he delivered. Everything hojlund does now, GW did even better...hold up, dribbling, finishing etc. Hojlund has alot to do to even get into the comparison story with GW.

I get it, he messed up but lets not rewrite history and make him look average yet he was special. Football wise, he was that good. He wasnt a RW but is better than any RW we have had since Ferguson. He was a better striker than hojlund and I am sure if he had stayed this season...it wouldnt even be a debate by the end of the season. Both are good...GW was better
Only thing Hojlund has over him is raw pace and Greenwood isn't slow either. His overall game was getting so much better before the suspension and we were having arguably the worst season in a decade.

This is something I never understood. I recall he was our best attacker against Wolves in the 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves and the crowd booed that Rangnick took him off.

Also, you were correct about him mentally. He seemed to be very strong in that regard and I do not think you would see him have the dips that Rashford has endured during his career.

Lets not rewrite history all too much. Greenwood in Ole’s last season was as selfish as he was talented.

The worse we get, the better our injured/released/sold players get. If we lose 3 of the next 5, Greenwood will be the heir to Raul.

The only one rewriting history here is you. Greenwood was as selfish and self entitled as Rashford.

His hold up was poor, he never looked up and never got along with his team mates. Hoijland is a much better player for this team than GW will ever be.

Make no mistake, he’ll be a very good CF but we’ll end up playing him on the RW where we will become even more “individual fc”

Cristiano and Cavani hated played with him and GW was a spoiled brat with no respect for seniors or willingness to improve his game.

So yeah, lets not rewrite history.

I seen on Facebook he scored a sensational goal to them see it was a tap in to an empty net.

Still better than Antony

I'm one of those weirdos too. I've invested so much support for him from the academy upwards. I want him to fulfill his potential and preferably with us. I believe the real odd balls are the ones who wish him the worst and don't believe in redemption/rehabilitation.

No offense but who cares what CR7 or Cavani thought. They were both ancient and on their way out. And frankly Ronaldo had little cachet to complain about anything given his implosion at the end.

I disagree. He was deeply frustrating and outside of his goals he was a largely anonymous figure in far too many games. It was well known that he had maturity issues and was a poor trainer. He may well have moved past that with time but I think his absence from the team has created this myth that he would have been the answer to all our problems and nothing in his play supports that.

As a striker I never saw him hold the ball up and link play like Hoijlund despite his making 80+ appearances for the first team. He was very much like Rashford in that regard, capable of individual brilliance but struggled to integrate into a team role. Not to say he never could have done it but he was not showing the desire to do so at the point when his career here ended.

This is utter nonsense. Greenwood had a really good all-round game for his age.

He helped Greenwood during the 20/21 season. During the spring of that season, they struck up a good connection. There was an assist from Greenwood to Cavani in the away match at Tottenham after Greenwood came on. Then there was the match against 3-1 Burnley at Old Trafford. Another 2 matches in particular was the semi-final of the Europa League V Roma. They both scored again at Old Trafford and if they had not racked up a 6-2 win we would have gone out because we were awful defensively in Rome.

It was Solksjaer that convinced Cavani to stay another season and it was planned that it would be the three, plus Sancho as the main attackers. But then Ronaldo signed.

I believe the normal people are pretty apathetic now that he isn’t our player. But yeh you can hope someone who beats women has a great carrer as a footballer. Live your truth babes x

It's ok to be apathetic, but life is a learning curve. As long as he is looking to improve as a person and is doing the business on the pitch, then I want him back here.

It is step by step in his return to football. It is no mean feat to play professionally again and it is no mean feat to become a young father and relocate to another country at such a young age. His finish today was accomplished and his movement on the pitch is improving. I am sure he will get better in all aspects of life.

I know one thing he is a better finisher than you are a speller.

Oh wow really got me there, how I wish I could type on a phone as well as he could score. I’m glad your admiration for footballers supersedes your disdain for domestic violence. The real criminals here are poor spellers. Damn them to hell!

It’s also spelt feet mate.

This discussion is related to performances on the pitch and that is the way it should stay that way. If you want my input on the matter, visit the other discussion link where I have written about the other issue at length. So let's kick back, chill out, and listen to music.

Why? The kid fecked up and has had to deal with all the things that unravelled after that, I am one of those idiots who thinks people should get another chance. Hope he has learned his lesson and I truly hope he does well both within the game and life in general.

He’d start for us now he’s getting fit again.

Garnacho - Hojlund - Greenwood

Insane potential

I think you're probably remembering him too fondly as well. He's not a better striker than Hojlund, he's always performed at a RW role. He doesn't have the work rate, make as good runs off the ball, or hold the ball up as well. He was technically better and a better finisher. I'm not sure Greenwood has ever shown he'll be a modern CF at senior level, more your archetype winger-cum-forward like Salah.

This question has probably been asked before but are we sure Mason wants to play for us again?

The statement said mason greenwood won't play for man utd again. But yet some poster are saying that mason will be back at utd next season. He wont, utd would be hammered if they stated one thing and then backtrack because of a few goals. He's the past now,all about getting some value for him in summer.

Its better IMO if it's a clean break but the statement really didn't say that, it said:

"All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome."

Thats very clearly leaving the door open for him. It only talked about the restart of his career, nothing else.

Fair enough. Utds,Arnold's and greenwood's press releases that day convinced me that the door is closed. And I still am convinced. Greenwood said "a part of me will always be utd" sounds to me that he knows that it's not a case of going somewhere to get mins and sharp and return to old Trafford. He's been told there's no future there for him vibes.

Similiar cricisms were made about Cristiano as a young player.

This whole conversation is a bit silly as people are either downplaying him or overplaying him in equal measure.

Greenwood was a phenomenal prospect. He was far from the finished article, but despite needing to make massive improvements in his game he was still a valuable player for the first team from the age of 18, because he had immense ability to finish and shoot from medium-long distance with power and accuracy with both feet, with minimal back lift. He displayed the raw tools in other areas that made it clear he could be a generational talent with the right application. His all round game in the youth levels was levels above and showed he was capable of skills beyond shooting. He showed glimpses of these at first team level.

His progress was slower than hoped for but its entirely normal for young players still finding their way in the game. He was still way ahead of schedule and clearly still had the potential to be an incredible player. There were however also glimpses of selfishness, lack of in game intelligence, an inability to assert himself on the game as much as required, plus stories about late night parties, gaming sessions and the indiscretion when on England duty. Nothing out of the ordinary for a youngster. From various reports since though it appears there were more prevalent psychological and behavioural issues. But on talent alone he was up there amongst the best teenagers I've seen play for United. In terms of delivering a performance on the pitch he was well short of Rooney, Giggs or Ronaldo, but he was still top 10 teenagers for United, possibly top 5 (without checking dates etc but I recall Scholes/Becks broke through at 20+, Rashford I guess was 19 and made a more immediate impact on the pitch whilst looking less talented, not sure who else would be in the conversation, maybe Anderson/Rafael).

Cavani was helping him work on his game, so that statement doesn’t sound right.

If he can keep his heads down and perform well in his loan, we might be able to bring him back for next season.
Would like to see them as our forward line.
Garnacho - Hojlund - Greenwood

That was hardly a tap-pin. I could imagine quite a few of our players missing that. It was a well-struck goal.

This question has probably been asked before but are we sure Mason wants to play for us again?
That's a very genuine question. It's hard to tell imo.

On one hand I think he'd love to play for us again. We're still a big club and also his boyhood club. He is a lifelong fan since being a kid as well. But given how our fans would receive him, what the British media would say, the opponent fans would treat him etc. it'll put him under tremendous pressure and scrutiny both on and off the pitch if he'd ever come back.

So if there's no top club out side of England would want him I think he would. Else imo he might prefere to play in another country if given the chance.

Was a good finish from a tricky angle, wouldn't have trusted many in our present squad to put that in.

Does he want to play for us again, difficult question really. Depends if we feel we've treated him fairly this year.

On the right he's just nowhere near the right type of player, even looking at today's stats... 60 minutes, 13 touches, 5 passes. He's a pure goalscorer
Celta Vigo went down to ten men after 29 minutes and had 25%, I don't think those kind of numbers are typical of his time at United. I don't think it's fair to call him a pure goalscorer either, his link up play wasn't great but his dribbling was dangerous when he isolated a defender. He actually didn't score many tap ins at all from what I remember, which is something forwards do typically add to their game later on, and he didn't rely on physical attributes, which also should have naturally improved. Frightening to think how good he could have been (or still could be?)

It's ok to be apathetic, but life is a learning curve. As long as he is looking to improve as a person and is doing the business on the pitch, then I want him back here.
The severity of what we've all heard on that audio is too much, no way will I be able to support someone who does that.

It's exactly the same for me and many others, it would be a step too far to support a club that picks him to wear the shirt without any explanation as to what exactly that audio was, if it wasn't what we think.

The fact there hasn't been a plausible alternative explanation from Greenwood or the club suggests what we think happened is what happened but they just want to get on with things.
