If Mason would prefer to concentrate more on his United career for the time being, I don't see any problem here. Plus, who cares about England anyway?

In all seriousness, he has plenty of time to develop, mature further before start playing for England regularly. This doesn't mean that he is not talented for the England squad. I would prefer him to save his best for United anyway. I don't see what's the big deal. I thought International break/week is mostly frowned upon, is it not?

Tbf, it's very unusual for a young player like this to make himself unavailable for the senior team. Who knows, though. It might work out for the best.

Some posters are intensely overprotective when it comes to Greenwood although some posters are over critical. I think he's a world class talent and a very good player but is naturally inconsistent as a very young player, I've been accused of hating him for holding this view.

Agreed and I don't get it. Mason is absolutely world class if he can improve his decision making and become less selfish which he is doing now. People should be able to see that. Honestly think Ronaldo is the best thing that could have happened to his career because this weakness in his game was never being addressed by the manager (whose only coaching video online is instructing his players to "shoot" whenever possible btw).

If Ronaldo can make him more of a team player, Mason will be a Ballan do'r level player in a year or two.

Couldn’t disagree more. You’ve got it all wrong he’s not got an issue with “selfishness” he’s got an issue with the teams chance creation. In w decent team he gets at least one great chance per game and in that environment he would score a shed load. In this current Utd team he’s lucky if he gets one decent chance on goal in every 5 matches which is nowhere near good enough for his talent level. This selfishness nonsense is the same stuff that used to be thrown at Ronaldo by cluesless Utd fans. Clinical forwards earn the right to shoot bad Greenwood is one of them.,

If Greenwood was playing as a CF, he would earn that right somewhat on a few occasions but definitely not as a winger. You're just wrong on the selfishness part. If you have played the game at any level and you can justify this, then you're just lying to yourself.

He’s just not selfish. It’s become a massive agenda this season from fans of Ronaldo (who I love btw). He hasn’t had a shot this season that wasn’t fair or justified in my opinion. He has earnt the right to shoot with his worth class finishing ability but like all great players people have an issue with that unless he scores. His all round game has come on leaps and bounds and his overall play is fantastic for his team like in the last game.,

United fans...too many of them with some weird hate on Greenwood and Bruno....i don't get it. Even when they get credit it's back handed compliments when they along with Bruno have been our best players for ages and it's not even close.

Agreed!

Mistake to start him today. Poor on the counter, offered little support to Ronaldo and looked slow. Should've started Rashford.

Why should Rashford be anywhere near the starting lineup? Did you happen to see his performance against Atalanta? Neither should be in the starting lineup

Not that it would have helped seeing as we where outclassed in every department but Rashford more than likely would have started if he was fit enough.

I'm not going to bother critiquing any players performances anymore. At this stage the problem so clearly lays with the coaches that I don't expect any player to perform well until we have a change in management.

I say the same as in the Rashford thread. How can you criticise him when we clearly lacked a gameplan. The problem is not Greenwood, not Rashford, not Sancho, not Ronaldos workrate or whatever. It's Ole.

Starting him was a mistake

I don't know what the excuse is for his lack of work off the ball though

Good post but unfortunately so many are incapable of seeing that.,

He is not a winger.

Wasting and blunting his natural instincts playing him out wide.

Feels to me as though Mason isn't yet ready for matches against the likes of Liverpool and Man City. I may have forgotten a good performance from him against an elite team, there certainly haven't been many.

If he's not shooting at goal, he's pretty much useless isn't he? Really needs to work on his all-round game and cultivate his creative instincts.

I don't agree. I think he's an excellent allround footballer, contributes way more to the general play than Rashford, Ronaldo, Cavani etc.

No surprise our attackers were isolated when we approached the match more negatively than a Pulis side.

Also quite interesting that Bruno looked hapless defensively playing on the right. Almost like it’s a coaching issue.

Agreed. It's impossible to see what he needs to work on anyway because we're so pathetic. He's clearly instructed to shoot a lot. Same reason Rashford often doesn't track back. Ole is a-okay with it.

I know it doesn’t matter at the moment but he was much rounded player when he was in academy. Was involved in attack, created and scored a lot of goals. It seems like he is bit lost at the moment and his role in the team isnt defined.

Pretty grim stat on MOTD. He made 4 sprints in his 67 minutes on the pitch. The fewest sprints made by any City attacking player was 15. 36 year old Ronaldo made 14.

WTF is wrong with him? How can a young player get away with not pulling his weight like that?

Yeah, the next manager ideally will get him running and after Cristiano leaves in the summer of 2023, establish a front 3 of Sancho-Greenwood-Rashford where their pace and young legs can be used to press effectively like Liverpool or City's front 3.

He’s not progressing and developing as a player, it’s all on the coaching and management.
I would go further and say it's quite the opposite. His pace and power has got a lot better but he's lost that fire he had from 2 seasons ago, he hardly makes runs, constantly gets the ball too deep to be a threat to the opposition it's like the life has been sucked out of him.

I still think he's a generational talent tbf and it's not like anyone else is performing anyway.

Needs a kick in the arse to take that next leap a manager who is firm and expects what he can deliver at his best not whatever he's dishing out now

I think ole has brought him as far as he could

He made it, no need to run anymore. Ole plays him consistently, lack of workrate and selfishness go unpunished. I would do the bare minimum as well if i get picked on a weekly basis. Everyone is telling him how good he is etc., seems like Ole and the team are happy with his efforts.

I dont blame a young player when the club and coaching have low standards.

Crap management. No accountability whatsoever.

Needs a a stronger manager. Could be world class but he won’t get there under Ole.

People absolutely tore me to bits when I suggested he might be a little overhyped. Don't talk about world class or generational before someone has even shown any consistency to their game. He still has time to turn it around as there is no doubt he has talent but he is going to have to work harder from here on out.
I'd start Sancho over him any day of the week.

Needs to be playing as a striker.

We’re wasting this lad currently, he isn’t a winger. Trouble is, the Ronaldo signing sets him back a few years for that role.
