Martial | Loan Speculation

the problem is whether Martial can adapt his game. As Mourinho says himself, last season United had a passing game which was setup for Martial to score in. This year he needs to adapt that hes not the main striker and needs to develop his game more, after all he's only 21.

I get that he has to adapt to playing as a left winger (even though he's played there plenty), but shouldn't the playing style of the team suit him more, if anything (genuine question)? The way I see it, we're more direct when we recover the ball, and the attacking players have more freedom to interchange. Surely that should mean both more space and the manager's approval to take people on, which should be ideal for him.

To me it just looks like he lost confidence over the summer, and hasn't had either the luck or the sort of performances that would see him find it again. You can see he wants to go past defenders and either set someone up or have a shot, but he's hesitant in everything he does and allows the defenders to get back at him. He's not the tricky dribbler type, he's more about the explosion, so he really needs to be decisive.

It would be nonsensical

Who would play left winger if he'd leave ? Lingard, Rashford, Depay, Young ? We wouldn't improve like that at all.

Hoping he gets talked out of it. I think he will get a lot of games on the left wing from here on out, probably sharing the position with Rooney mostly though. If Martial doesn't start against Boro then I think there's some major smoke here.

yeah that's what I used to think too but Mou has been spouting the other stuff, perhaps to deflect from his poor form/lack of confidence

If he has been briefing his agent to come out with that statement then he needs to be thought a lesson. His performances this season have mostly been piss poor and his body language is a disgrace.

Even the wording of the statement looked a sly dig at us "Seville are a great club, a big club who play in the Champions League".

If he doesn't fancy fighting for his place here at this stage, then what chance do we have of keeping him here if he does start to develop?

He hasn't played well but don't have a go at his body language. He's always been this way at United, just seems a very reserved guy.

This would be a ridiculous move for United. Martial showed last year what he can do and he will only get better. Ideally he should be starting for us.

I would be very surprised if he left. He hasnt played much but still we need him.

When he's playing well his body language is irrelevant as you say. But when he's not, plus whispers of discontent, plus agent noise, people start making a point of it.

His agent thinks he's helping but he's not.
This. Each time his agent has spoken out Martial has immediately responded with some United related post on one of his social media platforms, think he could do with telling his agent to shut his mouth.

We already made his agent rich by making Tony the most expensive teenager of all time. He should learn to shut the feck up, otherwise, Woody should send Mendes towards Tony and tempt him away.

I'm making a point of it because he looks like he has the weight of the World on his shoulders and playing like he is not focused on his football here.

It was pointed out as a sign of his maturity that he was already married when we signed him. However he was very niave to get involved in an extramarital relationship with some reality show wannabe celebrity, of course she was going to sell her story and rip apart your relationship and all this with a child a few months old at home.

Whatever he did or whatever effect it's had on him he needs to get his head in the game on the pitch. He appears to have almost withdrawn into himself, and running off and hiding in Spain will do no good for him.

He was not married.

Martial has been mishandled here imo. We should of played him into form, but he never gets a run in the side.

He shown in his first season that the potential to be world class is there. He needs to play upfront when Zlatan goes eventually.

There's half the season to go. It's really not a bad thing to get players up to peak form at different stages of the season.

We've got a lot of games coming thick and fast soon and I put money on him stepping into gear while others show signs of fatigue.

Has been a big problem of ours for years, feck that, let players win their damn place in the team like Carrick, Miki and Herrera have done this season.

Carrick, Mkhi and Herrera should never of had to win their place in the team.

Clearly our best front three in a 433 is Martial, Zlatan and Mkhi.

We rotate it far too much. Barca always play MSN if fit, Real always play BBC if fit. Chelsea don't rotate either.

Mkhi won his place in the team by working hard when he wasn't getting game time and forcing his way into the side by producing once Mourinho gave him another chance. Herrera and Carrick weren't nailed on starters to start the year and did the same.

Martial plays like he did against Sunderland more frequently, be it off the bench or in a start, and starts banging in goals or creating chances for others he'll be a permanent fixture in the starting XI. Until then he needs to prove himself as it should be.

Sam Johnstone is the only United player going out on loan this window according to Jose. I'd say that was from the first team squad, I think some of the younger players might be loaned out to gain experience.

On the contrary, Mourinho gave him ample opportunities in the side at the beginning of the season - it was Martial himself who looked out of sorts, for one reason or another. Mourinho saw that he wasn't performing at the levels he had set the previous season and so phased him out.

Mourinho isn't daft, he knows what a talent he is. But at 21, unless he is performing consistently, Mourinho will always choose to use him a little more sparingly in the hope that he can nurture him, rather than risk fielding a player who may not carry out his instructions to the fullest.

I don't see any issues personally, just give it time.

Great for motivation that.

How did it work when we played Rooney back into form in the past?

Oh, thats it, we had a forward who couldnt trap a bag of cement for 6/7 even 8 games twice per season.

Not sure why you quoted my post here as that was exactly what I said.

Only Sam Johnstone will be loaned out in January. May as well close this thread.

There is literally zero chance of him going anywhere. This is like wasting space on the internet.

Probably why Jose was so emphatic that Johnstone would be the only player leaving on loan, put it to bed early for other clubs, agent, and player.

Really hope he gets his head down and starts playing to his ability.

I hope Madrid or another top side come in for him. Deserves to be starting for a top team.

Why are you so melodramatic and impatient? Martial will work his way back into the starting XI, and he'll be a huge player for us for many years.

Yet all it takes is a couple of months in and out of the starting line-up and you are wishing for him to leave.

Wishing for another club to come snap up one of the biggest talents from your own club, for what I presume would be a discounted fee as well.

Vintage Scholesy.

Fully agreed.
