Martín Zubimendi | £51m release clause

Surprising but good news to have a Partey replacement ready in advance and for a "sensible" price.
A striker, a LW and RW cover next please.

This would be a brilliant signing for them, but I'm dubious that Zubimendi would leave after turning down Liverpool in the summer.

I half joked at the time he knocked Liverpool back that Arteta will have been in his ear saying in 12 months we have Jorginho and Partey leaving and want you here.

I say half joked, because given he's been a long term target for 2 years +, that's exactly the tactic I would be using to try and convince him if I was Arteta.

Staying those 12 months keeps Sociedad happy they aren't losing 2 midfielders at the same time, eases Zubimendi's conscious about leaving them same time as Merino, but assures him there's a move 12 months down the line when it suits all parties better.

I have no evidence that's how it worked out, but would seem logical to me, and Ornstein said we've been in dialogue even when discussing the Merino deal.

I hadn't actually thought about Merino having left the same summer to be honest so that's a very good point, that's makes a lot of sense why he didn't leave now at the time.

I thought maybe it was just another case of Basque player staying super loyal to one of those Basque clubs which we've often seen over the years for Sociedad and to a greater extent Bilbao, but maybe it's a case that he would leave after all but just didn't want to leave them in the lurch like you say losing 2 key midfielders in the same window.

I'd love to see him at Arsenal, think he'd be an absolutely dream signing for you at the moment - especially considering the release clause makes it very good value in today's market.

A colossal blot on the record of whichever manager continued to play that unnamed footballer too.

Is anyone surprised that lego head still continued to play T Piddy even after last week's update on aforementioned issues? This is why no one wants them to win the league. He's got no scruples, no ethics and no morals when it comes to a player that is useful to his own footballing ambitions.

I think it was said at the time Sociedad loathed to lose both at the same time, Merino had only a year left on their deal so there wasn't much they could do about him, and part of the play to Zubimendi was exactly this.

My hypothesis about Arteta being in his ear at the time as well might be a bit of a jump, but does at least seem a logical one considering how we've heard nearly every window how much Arteta would love him.

Incidentally we seem to be hearing similar for another Basque player, Nico Williams for a year or so now. Still think he would be Barca bound if he left.

Nice that you were given a number of years to sort a replacement out. Playing alleged rapists worked out really well for your club.

A little surprised that Madrid didn’t take him. I think he could have fixed some of the deficiencies left by Tony Kroos leaving.

Stiller is a better version of Zubi. I hope we sign him

Should be neither him or their fans care much unfortunately
Not all of them, I have a friend who is an Arsenal season ticket holder, he initially wrote to the club to make his views known about it and has this season stopped attending completely and refuses to go until the unnamed footballer is no longer an Arsenal player.

A London based player*

We have a striker/LW in one player that you can buy - Rashford. Please take hjm
Very tempting but think we'll pass, thank you.

I'm not sure what you want me to say to that. It's terrible, the circumstances made that shitty call possible and they have chosen to do it. The second part don't make sense.

Solskjær would have done the same thing, ten Hag as well. With Amorim we hopefully won't find out.

We’re not allowed to talk about it yet but I hope Arsenal and Arteta get crucified by the media once we are. Laughable and immoral handing by them

We're really good at making ourselves look daft publicly when it comes to signing players. Usually pretty good at selling, and so far on the pitch things look pretty good but we're always doing another clubs scouting.

My theory on this is that he was going to sign for us in the summer. Arteta called him and asked him to wait a year. Liverpool in summer 2024 were a complete unknown quantity under Slot. A lot of people were expecting a post-Klopp hangover. Zubimendi decided to wait and saw us as a gamble, and here we are. We were never going to go back in for him after he turned us down in the summer. Arteta gets his guy.

What doesn't make sense? Playing Partey worked out well for your club. Gave you a decent player for a while, let you buy a good replacement for a good price. Did playing an alleged rapist not work out for you? It's all well that ends well right. You've got a Partey replacement at a decent price, partly because you didn't have to rush you buy one. Because you were allowed to, and continued to play, an alleged rapist.

Oh yes sorry, i thought you were using an ironic tone but i agree. As i said terrible situation, the club used loopholes to justify the unjustifiable.

To be fair even though you look very good right now, the situation hasn't changed much from Zubimendi's pov. That hangover could still happen next year, your 2 best players could still drop off/leave very soon.

Potentially but I believe Van Dijk & Salah are staying. I think Trent's off. We're looking more appealing now than we were in the summer though. We weren't even a certainty for top four back then.

Arsenal still have a lot of work to do to show everyone that they can get over the line in terms of big trophies.

That would be breaking the rules so believable in this case.

You took a very understandable scenario and added a needlessly overcomplicated twist to it that’s based on pretty much nothing… have you ever heard of the Occam’s razor?

You being a gamble probably played a part in his decision. As well as Sociedad potentially losing two of their key midfielders late in the window. The hypothetical Arteta call (“we’re certainly going to sign you next year, just wait. Why not now if we’re so sure? Never you mind”) doesn’t add anything to that situation, he just chose not to sign for you (knowing that Arsenal, City… and Liverpool are still likely going to come for him next summer).

Haven't followed this. Whats stopping anyone else from triggering the release clase and blowing Arsenal out of the water wage wise.

Hopefully he turns out as bad as Merino.

Yeah Merino was better for Sociedad and he hasnt managed to make a big impression yet. Zubimendi is at least in his best form so signing him now hes more likely to be a success than in previous seasons where he wasnt doing that well but I'd still take Mainoo over him.

In Hughes' world, he was the only player who could possibly improve us last summer.

So it's of course disappointing to see him go to arsenal, as that means we have no transfer targets left.

After Mendy it should be obvious why booting out players shouldn't be celebrated and everyone has the right to determine their guilt in a court. Mendy had his 3 years and his entire reputation ruined.

Now unless an unnamed footballer who's 30, has clear evidence eg Greenwood then I totally agree with you.

Zubimendi is class, but if I was an Arsenal fan I’d want to know with absolute certainty that my club has the money to sign a top-level striker given that they’ve gone and agreed this relatively expensive deal in an area of the pitch which has to be seen as a lower priority as of today.

It’s be like us signing another 6 ft 3 slow CB when we have two in the mix already and in desperate need of wing backs and a striker.
