Marquinhos

I've actually never seen him play, is he any good? I see he's 20, so if he has huge potential that's a great age to buy him.

I wouldn't mind a 20 year old rightback, but I think we need more of an experienced head if we're considering him as our new centreback.

I'm pleased to hear we were in for him. Could be one of the best in a few years imo.

This is the guy that we need to be going for IMO, and we probably have a chance of signing him too, unlike someone like Varane. The only thing that worries me is that at 20 years old, we could end up with a very inexperienced backline. Bring him in with someone more experienced (Hummels being the only obvious candidate that I can think of) and I would be delighted.

Would love to see it happen, Barcelona chased him last summer and didn't manage to convince PSG to sell, lets see if we can do it...

I thought he's a center back that's just playing at RB at the moment due to Luiz-Thiago?

I'd be very wary of buying him then. Young CBs often look great alongside experienced leaders, but shadows of themselves when they're asked to organise defences on their own. United already have 3 such examples at the club. Marquinhos may be different, but it's not a gamble I'd want LvG to take.

I want a CB with a few miles on the clock. Not necessarily old but, at the very least, battle hardened.

I suspect it might be both. I think Evans might have player himself out of the club and Smalling and Jones aren't exactly fixtures in the side at the moment.

My main concern with him is his lack of height at 6 foot. From what I've seen of him he has a good leap but he would need a jet pack to compete in the air with the likes of Crouch.

I think it's fair to speculate that we'll be looking to bring in two central defenders this summer. Hummels is a noted long-term target, and it wouldn't surprise me if the club was looking to build around him and another, younger defender in the long term.

Evans looks largely finished here and Smalling will probably be given a decision to make, too. Jones, I think, will get a new contract in the summer given his current status in the first team. Ultimately, we could well have room for another two players at centre half.

The size of our squad will depend upon European football, of course.

He looks quite short, and not particularity 'Premier League' ready to me. I'd be wary of spending big money on him.

Doesn't say much that hasn't already been said, but very interesting that him and his agent have confirmed our January interest.
PSG defender Marquinhos was repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United during the January transfer window. Manchester United needed to strengthen in defence and it was a surprise when the window closed and the only player signed by the club, for the first team squad at least, was goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer.

The Marquinhos rumours were at first dismissed as yet more gossip because so many defenders had been linked with Manchester United, but when the defender's agent confirmed the interest and approach it made things a little different.

Marquinhos has today spoken to L'Equipe and also confirmed Manchester United did make an approach and that makes him happy. The Brazilian defender said "I let my agent handle it. PSG has refused to start negotiations. They closed the door. I took it as a sign of confidence. PSG counting on me. But to be honest, it made me happy to know that Manchester was interested in me. It's rewarding."

The defender didn't rule out a summer move and it would be no surprise if Manchester United were to return then. PSG would rather Marquinhos stayed and are working on a renewal but the Brazilian wants to play at central defence and has found it hard to consistently push past both of Thiago Silva and David Luiz.

It's more the case of Marquinhos playing very well and Silva and Luiz looking very poor this season. At his breakout season for Roma I don't remember him needing an 'experienced leader', he was the leader, if anything.

We are not in a position to say no to a player of Marquinhos calibre. I would take him any day of the week as long as we bring in an experinced and excellent defender with him.

I think it's the completely wrong move if it's the one we're planning on. We're lacking authority back there...I'd guess he can't even speak English.

Marquinhos has now come out and said Barca were also asking after him in January. Sounds a lot like he's after a better deal from PSG to me, although I'm sure his head would be turned if anyone is prepared to beat their offer.

Wasn't Barca's transfer ban upheld before the January window even started?

Couldn't tell you. I just read it here:
http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/manchester-united-wanted-barcelona-too-january-offers-c
this weekend he's spoken to Telefoot in France and said similar things, but brought Spanish club Barcelona into the equation too "Yes, Manchester United wanted me. Barcelona too. They just talked but PSG didn't give them hope. It gives me confidence. The president is super happy with my work. The coach too."

Pulling the same s**t Matuidi pulled when he wanted a new contact at PSG.

Matuidi just wanting a contract was well known. In Marquinhos's case, he has been quite vocal about playing as a CB. Ditto his agent.

Barca wanted him in the summer. I remember there were strong rumours because PSG have just signed David Luiz and he was then just No.3 in the pecking order. Barca needed some CB's but they couldn't signed Marquinhos for PSG's asking price after the Suarez transfer.

Barcelona have been after Marquinos for two years now. I doubt this is fabricated.

The fact we seem to be looking for a RCB as well as Hummels is reassuring.

To me it seems we're after a right-footed AND for a left-footed CB. We only have Rojo in that position. So Laporte makes most sense to me. Laporte and Godin/Hummels/whoever.

I think Hummels will be seen as the LCB as he is two footed and has played on the left side of most of the CB partnerships he's been in over the last few years.

I

It's all about balance ... ;-)

I know but LvG has shown he'll play a two footed CB at LCB as Evans is more right footed and has started as the LCB. In truth Hummels has spent so much of his career playing as the LCB it might be awkward for him to start playing as the RCB at this stage.

He's class. If we can sign him and someone like Garay [who I rate highly] then that will be CB sorted.

I really do not think PSG is stupid enough to sell him. I also feel the same about Veratti and Lucas Moura.
