Fellaini had 3 MOTM performances in Europa League. Two of those were arguably the most important matches, against Celta in the semis and Ajax in the final. But, of course, let's forget all of this because of a half time substitution against St Etienne.

I didn't say forget about it but you're proving my point there is no perspective to anything you are saying just blinkered intent to over value his contribution.

Winning the europa is full of key moments. When he was having a horror show against st etienne others picked up the slack, it's very feasible we would have won the competition without him.

Yeah thats what happens in Fellaini's threads sadly, Valencia was great for 90 mins the other night and there was only 4-5 new posts in his performance thread. Fellaini comes on and has a decent half and there's 2-3 new pages of people praising him to the stars and of course the inevitable discussion about how people who don't rate him only do so because of xyz.

People see posts criticizing him and then feel the need to overrate him to compensate and vice versa with others underrating him because of half the nonsense that people spout about him. If someone had never seen Fellaini play and just went off the Caf's performance threads, they would have no idea how good Fellaini actually is. Going off posts alone he could be anywhere from as average as Lee Cattermole to as good as peak Zidane.
He is a pretty good player in my opinion. I like him, he is valuable to the team in terms of contribution and puts in a better shift than most on the squad.

Putting in a good shift ranks higher than anything else to me in footballing terms because it shows you want to be the best you can for the club and nobody deserves constant battering with a good attitude.

MOTM in one of the semifinal and the final is blinkered intent to over value his contribution indeed ;)

As is always, the expectations for Fellaini are considerably lower than they are for our other first team midfielders. Even somebody like Pereira would be roundly criticised for merely winning a few balls and passing it to Martial.

That isn't to deduct from Fellaini's admittedly good performance the other night, moreso highlighting the bizarre way in which some posters use very rudimentary performances to further their agenda against the perceived Fellaini negativity.

These people are just as futile as those that relentlessly pretend as if he is some talentless circus clown. We've got one poster claiming he should be in the midfield three ahead of Herrera at the top of this page. Objectively watching them play football is all you need to know that this is staggeringly misguided.

Fellaini is a good player to have in and around the squad. However, I'd also argue that at no point during his time at United has he played to the best of his ability. Which will attract criticism, although that really says more about my own expectations for Fellaini, and how good I know he can be (based largely against his Everton form).

Some of you lot, in your efforts to protect, essentially insult Fellaini's actual ability by pretending as if shite can be polished. He has shit games. I know it and he knows it. So don't over-egg them into something considered better.

Good post, especially the bolded part.

Like I said no perspective and you only underline my point by your selective memory.

 I will stop now because this is ridiculous. You mention 45 minutes against St Etienne and I mentioned the last two games in a cup competition and I have selective memory.

I mentioned that alongside all 11 appearances and 1 goal but guess what you picked out the bit you didn't like and focused on that.

Like I say you underline my point every time without even meaning to.

Utter shite. Pogba and Valencia were the best players on the pitch. I have looked at literally 4 different sites and they have all rated Pogba as the better player and also, I suppose being at the match and all, it was obvious Pogba was better. Fellaini was decent enough but still pretty clumsy with his challenges. Posts like this are just going to provoke people into further criticising him and they're equally as bad as the so called 'hate' posts.

I was honestly shocked at how poor Pogba was. I think you are simply a fanboy in need of help. Fellaini completely outclassed him on the night. I suggest you get over it. It's bad enough that likes of Luckhurst gave him an 8/10 for what was an abysmal display. Complete excrement flowing from your post. Pogba's PR team probably paid you a fiver.

The fecking state of this post

Fellaini was one of our best players in the final of the europa and scored one goal in the competition.

At least we agree on this part.

He was a part of winning it but that part also included poor performances and being hauled off at half time against st ettiene.

You mentioned "poor performance". Which ones were those apart from 45 minutes against St Etienne when all our team was playing like this was a Pogba testimonial?

Believe it or not he doesn't play well every game. I was just offering an alternative to the idea we wouldn't have won any of last three trophies without him you may not be able to accept that but as I say that just shows you lack perspective.

Fellaini was good in the final but he didn't score so without Pogba and mikh we don't win the final, what about all the other rounds as well, fellani'a one goal doesn't win all them, or every other motm.

So let's say without about a dozen players we wouldn't have won the europa, doesn't have same ring to it does it.

You may think it ridiculous but my point was simple and rational even without fellaini we may have won the europa, and before you respond I know he was motm and scored a goal.

I was talking specifically about Europa League in my original post. And I mentioned that he became a fundamental player towards the end of the season.

If you judge a midfielder's contribution by the goals scored, then we are seeing football differently and it's useless to go ahead.

Nothing to do with judging midfielders by goals, like I said I was just offering an alternative that maybe we win a few games without fellani and the narrative that he don't win the europa or league cup without him isn't gospel.

Agree with everything, especially the part in bold.

However, you will find people who strongly disagree with this as, "we have 10 other players on the pitch who would've stepped up"

Yeah... I'm not seeing that

What exactly are you not seeing?

You aren't seeing people massively overrating Fellaini and his contributions or you are not seeing people directly compare Fellaini to Zidane?

If it's the former which is what i was implying then you need to re-read his performance and transfer threads, if it's the latter then i haven't seen that either but considering how some overrate him to ridiculous levels i imagine a few of them might think he is at Zidane's level.

Working hard is great and i think we all expect that from United players. And the majority of United fans can recognize and respect when a player does work hard for the team, i don't remember reading anyone ever criticizing Fellaini's work rate.

But all our players put in a good shift, they have to in a Mourinho team or they would be out the door.

Yes they do, but my point being that if you put in a good shift, you try to improve in training as Fellaini has judging by his after match shuttle runs, then you have done the best you can possibly do. Then the blame is technically on the manager for selecting a player that may or may not be good enough for the team no matter how hard they try.

If hes so rubbish, why does the manager keep playing him? If he costs us games why would he risk so much last season on playing him?
If he wanted to win some fans over, just sell him but he didnt. Its not like its JT, jose has no history with him. Jose willing to risk his job for Felliani?

Now setting aside that i don't happen to be one of those people who thinks Fellaini is completely crap or a pub player and this line has often been directed at those who are highly critical of Fellaini's performances.

But that logic doesn't really add up for me, so the thinking behind it is if a player works hard but doesn't perform well they can't be criticized because because the manager picks them. Well ok great but following that line of reasoning the manager by failing to recognise a players detrimental bad form and continuing to pick the underperforming player is also underperforming in his job. But if he's trying his hardest then he can't be blamed either as he didn't appoint himself to the managers job.

So then the responsibility shifts to the chief executive for hiring the manager, if he doesn't see that the manager is making continued mistakes then he's not doing his job right either. But if he's working hard also who do we blame then the owners?

It's basically just an exercise in blame shifting. The truth is if a player is playing poorly he can be criticized for it no matter how hard he works, the manager can also be criticized for continuing to pick him and if it happens over a prolonged period then everyone running the club right up to the owners should shoulder some of the responsibility.

Personally I'm delighted he has stayed and I think all the geniuses that thought he was championship level could look very silly this year if he carries that form over. He may misplace a pass every now and then or give away a foul, but his general performances have been very effective and personally I think he is working hard enough to deserve the jersey

He plays him cause he's a fecking good player and anyone who can't see that is blind.

Like I said, other than that I'm not sure why he would continue to pick him. He's had windows where he could get rid; he's bought Matic so he could get rid; got enough going forward so could get rid; Lots of fans don't like him so he could get rid; wasn't his signing and no history so could get rid; easy player to sell at the right money, so could get rid; listen to people on here he costs the team games and we'll never progress with him in the side, so could get rid; fans reckon Pereira should start in front of him so we could get rid......Yet he's still here and not only that the manager plays him but also in big games. Jose then comes out and says there's more chance of him going than him selling him?

It's strange how one of the greatest managers already can be so shortsighted. Yep even the good managers make bad calls but they are good cause they rarely make them twice...he's still here 3 managers later.

Oh leave him alone ffs. He's a bloody useful squad player, Mourinho likes him, he will play in certain games or come on as a sub for his height, heading and aggression. He's here next season regardless. He's had so much hate I'm surprised he himself has wanted to stay. On top of that, he's apparently a really nice guy off the pitch......

Yeah we need to get off his back. He's clearly shown his worth and value. Mourinho likes him and probably knows him better now, including his biggest flaws. If he's used correctly there's no point in selling him for a crap fee. We need a squad, we should he aiming to win everything next year.

He's a grand squad player alright. That's what he's going to be and there was never any real point in selling him considering how much we would have to pay for a replacement in the current market. Still massively overrated and underrated in equal measures on here, though. I don't get peoples obsession with either defending or criticising him. It's weird.

I love a underdog and even more one that despite negativity, being boooed by his own fans at their home ground still wants to be here. He's not the greatest player but he uses 100% of what he does have and when some of the players that do have ability go missing he doesn't. Love the enforcer bit in him that's gives it out. Aside from that, never read anything negative about him off the pitch and he's a true professional. Honestly never understood why he's not a fan favourite as Utd teams have never been about 11 CR's.....

Maybe it's because he epitomises the mediocrity of a club that aims for 4th 5th or 6th.

Which clubs that then cause you don't create a billion pound business based on mediocrity? Spending 180m on 2 players in the last 2 windows mediocrity? Surely there's cheaper ways of getting mediocrity than that?
