Again, saying he has been useless for the past 3 seasons...

People not watching the games..

Hard to argue with those.

Please visit the performance thread from last season if you're in disbelief.

Anyway, who cares, he looks good now which is all that matters

yeah because performance threads are a good indicator to judge players.

Especially the ones who CAF seems to hate.

Just because he's started this season mint under Mourinho, doesn't mean he was good last year under Van Gaal, or the season before, and certainly not his season under Moyes.

Bonkers.

Relax and hope he continues like this.

Precisely.

I've been highly critical of him and perhaps he's had more effective games but tonight, possibly for the first time, he looked like he belonged and had a purpose in the team.

Good performance.

The main differences are his positional sense and not making silly challenges or charging upfield to leave gaps in central midfield. Although he played in the same position at times under van Gaal and Moyes, he wasn't playing like this before. This is clearly something that Mourinho has worked on with him.

Seriously. We are two games into the new season so lets not get carried away. He has been poor up to this, mainly because of how you would play him. I thought we were a bit open in midfield tonight, but that was as much Pogba's fault. Lets not get carried away just yet.

Funny. You guys made it look like I said he was a world class DM or something. I didn't.

I said he is a very decent player for the role. Make it what you will with that statement.

The point is that he has ability to play that role. Whether you rate him or not before does not matter. Because he has shown us that he can be a decent deep CM or DM too when we play him there properly which he just showed.

Not sure how people can't get it.

Sorry but you left yourself hostage to fortune with the previous three year remark, and were we not watching. We have been. He has been poor. At times very poor. My point was that he had Managers who were clueless on how to use him. Mou might do that, and if that happens brilliant. But up to this he has not looked up to it. So again, lets not get carried away.

He's dogged and disciplined in the task Jose has given him and I have to say he's shown much better positional play than I thought he was capable of, I think partly because he's not trying to go box to box and is fully focused on being the protector and water carrier. I thought in particular he did a good job in the channels of basically blocking off central routes and pushing the attacking player towards the fullback who would then dispossess them.

Gets credit when he plays well, it's not complicated.

You would think not, but the last couple of seasons have shown otherwise.

The '6' average rating considering he has played well in all the games so far (one main error - the backpass) suggests 'gets credit when he plays well' isnt as cut and dry as you suggest.

His stats would be interesting. I think he did a lot of work and in general was very good

Terminally under-rated on here but today was still one of his best performances for us, none of the elbows bollocks and no sloppy mistakes.

Another great performance in the holding role. Surprisingly he can tackle even without the use of elbows. :D

I dont think hes been great for us the last few seasons. In fact having him in the team has seen us resort to just boot it forward to him. Having better players in our team means we dont have to resort to that and hes not just trying to win long balls forward. Hes now showing he can do more of a job for us and ive been impressed (back pass against Leicester aside).

Some are gloating cos hes started this season really good (like it cancels out the last three seasons) which is bizarre, but overall I think we should judge him (as well as other players) based on what he does under Jose.

I thought Jose would like him and use him better but I also thought he would be a plan B. After the leicester match and last match, I was actually looking forward to see him and Pogba as a midfield. The bonus is hes not giving away needless fouls either.

He is surprisingly doing well in a deeper role. I wonder what changed.

I think the coaches have worked him very hard to make his positional play better and remove some of his bad habits such as ball watching and more importantly being too rash. In a forward role you can get away with it but in midfield that made him a liability at times. I think he does get unfairly called by referees due to his presence and reputation but he let it get to that point by not curbing his instincts. The fact is Mourinho and his coaches have seen raw quality in him that they can work with and it's had an effect.

Forget Marouane... this is clearly his evil twin Darouane Fellaini who's tearing shit up in the middle of the field. Long may it continue.

Looks like a completely different player, was adamant that he should never play #6 for us because of his rashness but he looks as if he's been playing in this role for years from his discipline and positioning. Very decent distribution from him too. The level of physicality he and Pogba can provide in a midfield should enable us to dominate aerially. Yeah, and I think that's the best performance I've seen for him in a United shirt.

This many complements on a Fellaini thread feels weird so I'll just say - shit haircut.

He is determined, you have to give him that. He's been written off plenty of times but he seems intent on proving himself to Mourinho - and doing a very good job at it so far.

All credit to Fellaini tonight I thought that in the game against Bournemouth he was positionally excellent without playing particularly amazing but he combined both tonight. He showed real desire to pass the ball forward and move and did it well. He actually looked like a half decent footballer and sprayed some very nice passes. He sat very deep for my liking but in hindsight he was impossible for Southampton to get around tonight.

I will be the first to admit I have never thought Fellaini was a good player and have been the first to complain when seeing his name on the teamsheet. We could never question his desire but when playing in the middle it was like passing a ball off the wall when giving it to Fellaini in that it was coming straight back the way it came. The last two games have shown that this guy could potentially be not only a physical beast but a bit more technically astute in the middle.

I never thought I would feel this way but am genuinely chuffed for the big man and I for one look forward to more performances like this to come. At the moment he is undroppable and another few games like this would see me jump from pulling the "Fellaini is shocking" bandwagon to the "Fellaini is a top class defensive mid" bandwagon.

Congrats Felli, I genuinely hope this form is not just a flash in the pan and that he makes a hypocrite out of this impressionable Irish man!

Bring in a manager who can see how to get the best out of him and hey presto, it's like another new signing!

He will make up for this horrible mistake throughout the season. I'm with him!
That's what I said after the mistake against Leicester. I'm glad that he didn't let that affect him and managed to put two good performances.

Fantastic first two games, did exactly what has been asked of him. Always hated seeing him do poor, as he seems a nice guy.

Some of the replies (from our own fans) when he posted the picture of his blonde hair were disgusting, regardless of how he performs.
