Mark-Andre Ter Stegen

Xavi is about 35 and on his last legs, they need a CM.

Yeah, I know. He's 33 but he's going to need replacing. Probably Gundogan :nervous:. Though I think that's Cesc's ideal role, isn't it?

You're thinner than us but we have needs to address like other clubs too

They mishandled the Thiago situation and while Robert is a great squad player, he's not the solution there. The club needs a deeper CM than Cesc and Samper is still a few years away so the club will need to address this gap in the squad and soon.

Not in midfield, not anytime soon anyway. Roberto, I'm still unsure of what his potential is but he'll be remaining with the club...even if that would mean a loan although I assume when Song is gone, he'll be in the regular rotation
I think Gundogan might be a good fit to replace Xavi, but it seems you might miss out on him through timing? Because it seems Xavi has a couple of years left at Barca before he calls it quits and Gundogan is probably on the move in the summer (let's hope we're in with a shout).

I suppose in a couple of years, there'd be 1 or 2 new names on the scene (Oliver Torres, Koke, etc.).

You guys need a CB though.

Yep, that's been the speculation for almost a year now that it'd be Mats & Reina with Pinto either retiring to join the coaching staff or moving on. That's the one issue with bringing a player of Reina's caliber in as a mentor - will he be satisfied with that role or unsettle the young German? I think it'll be his swan song as a keeper and coming back to Barcelona will bring his career into full circle. Plus, despite how greatly rated Mats is, there is sure to be a bit of a learning curve and bringing him along slowly would make sense. Look at the capital, they have Iker & Lopez. I think having two quality keepers is ideal, if you can afford it and the players know their roles in the squad, of course

Barca could just buy a new centreback and play busquets in that xavi role, unless he can only play the carrick type role? He's a great passer mind you, and having a centre back instead of mascherano can only be a good thing, besides he's an okay defensive midfielder.

Or they will just buy gundogan in a couple of years from us or someone else when they know his back is not a long term issue.

a good cb (hummles?) Plus ter stengen and that team is looking even better

I like how one of the things Barcelona apparently like in a keeper is one who is good with the ball yet they've moved from Valdes to Ter Stegen.

I think they will finally buy a CB and I too am among a minority of blaugrana fans that see Busquets as the natural heir to Xavi's role

Really? I really like Busquets as a player and think he's a very important player for both club and country, but I dont see him as Xavi's heir. For me, he doesnt have the attacking instinct to play that role. He also doesnt seem mobile enough to me.

Plus, why would you want to take one of the best DMs in the world, a player that suits how you play 100% and someone who would be impossible to replace and move him to a different position? Especially when you have Fabregas who, although he is a very direct player, has all the capabilities to be the next Xavi, he just needs to be a bit less adventurous and direct. Alternatively, Fabregas could play instead of Xavi but in a slightly tweaked system.

Because like Xavi, Busquets sees the entire pitch and we've really yet to see how effective he can be playing more forward. He serves his role for club & country like few others but I believe there is even more to get out of him

ridiculous, you guys could have bought thiago silva, and he WANTED to go to barca, but you guys cheaped out. absolutely absurd management and boardroom decisionmaking at barca. not to mention getting rid of one of your most dependable, and loyal defenders in abidal, one who could play centreback or left back, in a time where puyol is always injured.

What part is ridiculous of what I posted? They won't buy a CB this summer? You want an excuse to rant, rant away but it had little to do with the point being made

nothing of what you said, i was referring to barca's actions in the summer, and their decision making over thiago silva -> as being ridiculous. you've just misread what i've said, it's exactly about what you were talking about, getting a centreback. barca created their own problem, and shoved away the perfect solution, and world's best defender over wages, and a loyal, tried and true centreback/left back in abidal down to poor adjudgement. i find that ridiculous. thiago silva would have been absolutely perfect for you, and more valuable then 3 neymars as far as i'm concerned. abidal would've proved to be valuable as well. instead, nothing. and will barca get another chance at a centreback of thiago silva's quality this summer? no, that bridge is burnt, and who else is available even nearly as good or worth pursuing? you'll get nothing more then scraps now. i'm really dissapointed in what zubizarreta and rosell have done at barca's board. i think their transfer prioritizations have been ridiculous, and that's what i talked about.

I understand the ridicule towards ter Stegen. He certainly deserves it in this case but in general he's by far the 2nd best goalkeeper in Germany and the only other genuine world-class goalkeeping talent in the Bundesliga. He's only 21 years old and eclipses the likes of Weidenfeller, Benaglio and Adler in almost every aspect of the goalkeeping game. He's a brilliant shotstopper, his distribution is only 2nd to Manuel Neuer in the Bundesliga, he reads and anticipates the game very well, he's quick off the line, a reliable catcher of crosses and can handle himself very well in the air.

If a handful of blunders while receiving bouncy back passes is the only thing people can complain about, then Barcelona shouldn't worry. I have no doubt that Marc-André ter Stegen will work this minor issue out.

Isn't that just a carbon copy of the goal he conceded against the USA when the yanks beat Germany? I thought it was until I saw the scoreboard and saw it was for Mönchengladbach.

I was also reading that he attempts more passes more match than even our current wide players in Pedro or Alexis, not to mention Victor - double in fact. The difference will be that the club & fans will be less forgiving, especially in the early goings

Until this point I only ever heard huge praise for him. Yet when I watch him he looks fairly ordinary

The gif above is not really justice, DDG has made mistakes too this season, they are both YOUNG goal keepers, very young in-fact (goalkeeper terms).

Barca need a CB, possibly a RB (if alves is leaving) and a keeper, they have 50-60M to spend, a CM will come next year (2015) they'll probably raid Arsenal again as they seem to like Arsenal players if Wilshere performs well I can see they trying to make a sneaky bid for him, I think he fits with the Barca philosophy.

Doubt Barca would touch Wilshere with a barge pole, they run with a relatively small first team squad so surely can't afford to go for a player who spends 3 weeks of every month in the treatment room.

Spanish football he wouldn't take so many knocks, so I think he would have a good run there, just thinking about young players who would fit their philosophy one who Barcelona would likely go for, I don't think they can afford to go for Gundogan this summer as they need a goal-keeper and a CB, they shot themselves in the foot with Thiago really.

He still isn't as reliable as some of the praise might make you think. He is a promising keeper no doubt but still not quite as stable as some other keepers but tbf I hardly know a keeper who didn't go through a few shaky seasons before they turned 25.

I think it's good for people who are dating goalkeepers personally, when people ask them about their love life they can say "he's a keeper", they would assume he would be someone they want to spend their lives with, but the can continue on to say "no hes a goalkeeper, im dumping him next week"

Not being native at English I was actually a bit confused the first time I heard the american girlfriend of my best friend say about him that he is a keeper especially since I was sure he didn't even play football/soccer. Well I guess I should remember that being a keeper and being a goalkeeper are two different things to avoid confusions in the future.

He is on German TV, he said his goodbye today and has confirmed that he has signed with a new club. Still refusing to confirm which club it is and says it will be announced in the next weeks. The interviewer is asking him a lot of questions about Barcelona though which Ter Stegen is laughing off!
