Mario Hermoso - Free Agent

Have there really been any solids links with us? Some of recent mentions of him indicate that he's been offered to us rather than us pursuing him

I think he can be a very handy player especially with his versatility. We will also be able to get rid of Malacia next summer and gives Amass a run as he develops.

Would he be on reasonable wages? As I’m wary of us signing a 29 year old given how quickly some players decline after 30 or fail to adapt to the PLz

Seem a very good passer, but for a Leftback he doesn't carry the ball at all, that use to frustrate me with Telles.
Shaw doesn't either (anymore). Stylistically very similar. But think I'd prefer him as the backup of Martinez. Though he can play LB.

This transfer has the vibe of a player who we should have snapped up (because it seems so damn obvious) but will sign for one of our rivals and go and do well.

Of course if he signed for us he'd be dogshit and tear both ACLs 20 mins into his first game so it's kind of moot.

Not sure on the quality of the source but just read that apparently we've turned down the chance to sign him.

Same as Rabiot on a free, can see this one from both sides but understand why we wouldn't pursue.

That‘s the spirit lads.

Have never really rated him, plus he would get sent off a bit.

We still have Maguire and Lindelof on the book. No way in hell we’re getting another defender until they’re gone. With the Bayern signings, we’re stacked, numbers wise.

Numbers wise but still dont have a left back who can play football this season

We're a bit loaded at CB at the moment unless we sell so I understand why it may not have been as urgent as other needs

He played for Atletico more than 150 games and I hadn't heard of him before this transfer link.

It’s a no for me at least right now. Deal with higher priorities. If we have sold Magalof before August 31 and if we’re sorted in midfield then sniff around for Hermoso. It’s not as though he’s a once in a lifetime opportunity we can’t pass up on.

Yep expected once De Ligt and Mazraoui deals are done. We have decent enough cover even at LB at this point.

Focus all attention on a DM!

So if we bring him in we'd have:
  • Martinez
  • De Ligt
  • Yoro
  • Maguire
  • Lindelof
  • Evans
  • Hermoso
  • Shaw (as makeshift CB, particularly if playing 3 ATB)

Surely that would signal the intent to get rid of both Maguire & Lindelof?

I read somewhere at the start of the preseason, maybe it was the Athletic? There was a throwaway comment that United were looking to move on Maguire and Lindelof this window (along with others), and I don't think you just sign two new CB's for a laugh.

Maguire is going nowhere; outside of Saudi, absolutely nobody is picking him up on those wages.

Lindelof is highly likely to be moved on, I think.

Good. As shared I'd rather save the money for a top target. He'd be on too much as 5th choice (who we'll probably go homegrown due to squad rules) and I don't fancy him as a squad rotation player. I think the club will be looking to sign a younger pacey LCB/LB similar to van de Ven / Branthwaite considering our current squad building strategy.

Magurie might be more willing to lower his wage demands at another club if as the season progresses he spends a large part of it on the bench or out of the squad (once Yoro is back). He's already missed the Euros and unlike last season if we do have an injury at CB he may be pretty down the pecking order. So hopefully his desire to play for England which means he'd need to be playing more football might drive him to find another club.

Lindelof I think has to be looking to move on, as it stands he likely won't even be making the bench unless there are a lot of injuries.

The stronger in depth we get this squad, the easier it will be to move on some players I think as we would be able to leave Maguire and Lindelof out of the squad with no big difference to our bench which hopefully will make them more eager to look for a new club.
