Mario Hermoso - Free Agent

An experienced left footed defender on a free is not bad business. Better that than to just pray to the football gods that all our defenders stay fit throughout the season. Which has not happened since 1896

For the right money it's been a highly logical move all summer, in truth I'm surprised it has taken so long for us to be linked with him. Experienced, used to playing the type of defensive intensity ETH clearly wants, provides good cover for Martinez and can play left back to a good standard too - I don't think he's started there for a couple of years but he tends to drift out into the left back spaces as part of his natural game (that's mainly from the eye test, I'm hoping the heat maps would back it up).

Height is important mate. A CB might be able to play sexy football but ultimately someone needs to close down the typical 6ft4 giant in opposition during corners, set pieces or crosses. However in this case its not that much of an issue for three reasons

a- Its evident that INEOS is trying to add inches in the team. Ugarte/Berge, Yoro, Zirkzee, De Ligt and Mazroui are all 6ft+
b- Hermoso will be covering for Martinez whose 5ft10 and way weaker in aerial duels then Hermoso
People are acting like he's short though. He's fecking 6 foot

Based on what?

Stats mate.

Martinez won Aerial won stats are at a disappointing 0.5. Hermoso are at 1.4. Don't take me wrong, the average EPL CB hoover around the 1.9/2 while aerial beasts such as Maguire is 3.9. Still Hermoso is an upgrade in aerial duels to Martinez

He's a very good, ball-playing, left-footed CB with loads of experience. Not a bad option to have on a free transfer.

Is the source of the report reliable? He appears to be a Twitter no mark with barely more than a handful of followers.

Hermoso and Martinez according to the caf

He's certainly shorter to Stam, Rio, Vidic, Pally and Johnsen. He's as tall as Steve Bruce was but Brucey was basically the love child of Wolverine and she hulk. The guy was untouchable in corners and could split an express train in full speed in half.

However one has to take things into context. Hermoso will be covering two positions ie LB and LCB. In terms of LB he's better aerially then Malacia and Shaw. In terms of LCB he'll be covering for Martinez whose not weaker in aerial duels

Martinez/Hermoso and Yoro/maguire(de ligt) with Evans as a 5th option is enough for a top 4 push.

No idea....but anyone who plays in a Simeone defence must have something about him.........on the other hand, looking at Atleti fan comments, a lot of them reckon he's prone to defensive errors and distinctly average in that department, but a big asset in build up play. One even reckons he'd be great as a CDM......

If you're a good player being 6 foot or 6 foot 2 etc is absolutely irrelevant. Martinez himself proves it.

Singular stats are meaningless.

Would you rather have Martinez or Maguire in the team?

You're simplifying a complex issue.

Short answer to that is No. Maguire is not suited for a high line. However one need to acknowledge that a successful side have balance . That's why the last time we won the EPL we did so with Cleverley (the football equivalent of a lawn mower) in CM and with a cadillac ( Pogba) on the bench. Scholes and Carrick were better then Pogba but lacked legs, something Cleverley provided in bucket loads.

Therefore if we play Martinez then someone else must pick up the tab in terms of aerial duels. That can be achieved in two ways

a- bring the typical giant CB like Maguire or Tarkowski in. That's hardly ideal as they tend to lack the characteristics needed to play in a high line
b- add inches across the board. Which I think ETH had now learnt to do having fecked up loyally before with Malacia (5ft7) and Martinez (5ft10). Mazraoui is 6ft, Hermoso is 6ft, Ugarte is 6ft, De Ligt is 6ft2, Yoro is 6ft3, Zirkzee is 6ft4 and Berge is 6ft5. You see the pattern?

So are you

You're judging a player on a single metric.

Good player.

Mentioned him a while ago as someone who could be a decent pick up on a free.

I think if we can somehow get him to agree to a 2+1 instead of a 3 year deal, it’s a no brainer.

He’s 29, and we don’t want to get tied up with an aging player again.

He’s a decent player if he’s free, and we’re not getting a better player. He’s defensively quite solid, and given the option between de ligt for 50 mil and him, pick Hermoso.

Probably spend the money on an extra cm

I have no idea who he is so I'll prepare a statement for each scenario.

Utd sign him: "Wow we really must be broke. Surely there's a reason he didn't have a club? Injury prone too. Another dead season ahead."

Any other club sign him: "Smart pickup. Why don't we ever do deals like this? Instead we've spent the whole summer chasing De Ligt."
His dad is fat

Think I’m doing that right

So are you

You're judging a player on a single metric.

If I think that aerial duels is everything then I would say that we should immediately sell Martinez as he's utterly shit on that specific metric. That's not what I am saying. What I am saying is that football games are won when there's balance and aerial duels is one of the many metrics to take in consideration (in the EPL). In few words if we're playing Martinez as CB then he brings a set of strengths and weaknesses that can be exploited (if strengths) or need to be countered (if weaknesses). That's what the current transfer window is trying to do with De Ligt, Yoro, Berge and Zirkzee who are all huge lads that do well in air

Height is obviously an important factor for a centre back but ask yourself this question:

Would you rather have 5’9 Martinez starting for United or 6’4 Maguire?

So we are interested in free agents now in CB position. One of them was staring you in the face few weeks back and could have saved you from this hassle and bad planning Ineos. Younger and PL proven too.

I agree with the general premise. United do need to get taller and more athletic. Last season's team were regularly bullied physically and generally appeared slow and weak. That doesn't mean you dispense with technically gifted players in favour of a load of giants who can't trap a ball, but there is a balance to strike. De Ligt, Yoro, Berge and Zirkzee are all good technically, as well as being physically robust.

You are focusing on that too much and overblowing any potential issue.

Compare him to some very good PL CB's

Aerials won per 90

Ruben Dias - 1.79
Stones - 1.35
Akanji - 0.91
Saliba - 1.92
Varane - 1.69
Hermoso - 1.41
Konsa - 0.88
Pau Torres - 0.84

VVD - 4
Maguire - 3.9

His numbers are absolutely fine.

Do not want, 6m euros on a 3 year deal, do not make that sort of stupid mistake.

If he doesn't want a 2-3m euros deal on 2 years he can feck right off.

Wages are ALWAYS higher when the player is free, it's how it works.

Who?

Raises the floor of the squad, especially at LCB and LB which was our biggest weakness last season. A very sensible move if true.

Eh, median height of CBs in the PL, I gather, is 6ft1, making it all but irrelevant in the overall acquisitive assessment of a football player.

I want him because he seems like a right bastard. We need more of those types. He's good enough for Simeone then he's good enough for me.
