We have been linked with 29 year old former Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso who is currently a free agent and can play LCB or LB and is wage demands are apparently quite low, would he be a good signing as a backup option?

Thought he was off to Saudi? Not a horrendous salary to be honest, but I'd rather not.

Seems like too long a contract for someone of his age/ceiling. Maybe at 2 years plus an option of another....?

Injury prone isn't he?
Doesn't seem too bad, looking briefly on transfermarkt, which isn't the best source to be fair. Only missed 4 games a season through injury twice, the most bring 9 in 19/20.

Not sure I believe this link at all though, feels like his agent trying to stir up interest.

Unless Atletico had injuries like we did last season it seems he was first choice for them. Why wasn't he offered a new contract from them?

Salary and length of contract looks fine to me, makes sense. But the source of the rumor isn't exactly the best

I have no idea who he is so I'll prepare a statement for each scenario.

Utd sign him: "Wow we really must be broke. Surely there's a reason he didn't have a club? Injury prone too. Another dead season ahead."

Any other club sign him: "Smart pickup. Why don't we ever do deals like this? Instead we've spent the whole summer chasing De Ligt."

Thought we'd have been linked with him earlier, not a bad option for cover on a free.

Loans/short contract are basically a shot to nothing. A few signings like this wouldn’t be a bad thing with a view to a more long term approach / getting the right players in.

I don't know where he's from, but Mario Hermoso sounds like the name of a right cnut, along the lines of Ivan Cordoba, Paolo Montero, et al.

2 years plus the option of another if he hits certain targets? Should be fair for all parties.

Would be a smart signing along with De Ligt

He's just 29 but not sure about the wages. Seems decent for a good backup

He left Atletico because they wanted him to take a pay-cut to extend his deal. Maybe his salary and sign on bonus demands are scaring away clubs?

If we're skint then sensible move. We can't go into another season without LB cover.

Seems like we are missing out on De Ligt and Mazraoui, so are now trying to get this CB/FB hybrid player to cover both. And we're gonna keep AWB.

Depressing, but it is what it is, better than nothing ig

I couldn't have said it better

We were always looking for a LCB/LB irrespective of those targets.

100%

I think a cheaper CB makes more sense than De Ligt, if the purpose is for Yoro to actually play significant football this season when he's back from injury. Especially if gives us a chance to spend more on an actual midfielder and not rely on the guys we have in there beside Mainoo.

Only thing is if Hermoso is a left footed CB he doesn't really fit to play beside Martinez. He's also on the shorter side himself for a CB and doesn't win many aerial duels so I doubt we'd be playing them together much...

I've always wanted us to sign this lad since the first time I watched him play. Which was a YouTube compilation I just watched 40 seconds of.

He's 6 foot mate

why skint?

He's an Atletico Madrid first team regular who can play both as LB and as CB and his salary demands aren't stupid. His distribution of the ball is solid (85.8%) and in certain stats (ex progressive passes and progressive carries) he's better then De Ligt. I think he's a no brainer.

For a CB that's slightly on the shorter side. The average CB height in the PL is 6ft 2 in.

6ft is not great for a CB but we're talking of Martinez cover. That makes him an upgrade to the person he's covering for.

If he's good at jumping and timing those jumps it doesn't really matter if he's 184cm or 188cm...

Why is the Cat obsessed with height?

Height is important mate. A CB might be able to play sexy football but ultimately someone needs to close down the typical 6ft4 giant in opposition during corners, set pieces or crosses. However in this case its not that much of an issue for three reasons

a- Its evident that INEOS is trying to add inches in the team. Ugarte/Berge, Yoro, Zirkzee, De Ligt and Mazroui are all 6ft+
b- Hermoso will be covering for Martinez whose 5ft10 and way weaker in aerial duels then Hermoso
