No - what’s happened is - every single paper and journalist have all at once decided Rashford has been doing good at Villa to the point where even the England manager has started him - but they’re all wrong and the posters on RedCafe know better.

It's completely fair to point out that the standards are completely different at United & Villa though. He still hasn't registered a single goal for Villa. At United that would be deemed poor given his supposed high reputation. He's doing well at Villa in the sense that he resembles a professional footballer again, as apposed to a complete imposter wearing a United shirt for nearly 3 years. Nothing more.

Good for Marcus - he had a decent game especially in contrast to Phil Foden who had a shocker. I like Phil, have to as we`re related by shared Foden ancestry but have never met, however, I think it was his lack of performance that helped make Marcus look so good.

Marcus has certainly given more options to England even if he lacked something on the physical side - sadly it looks as if he`s become overly worried about getting injured. I didn`t see anything that will make Barcelona go for him and much as I wish things had gone differently for him at United, Amorim would be a fool to backtrack. New broom has swept clean and is still in the process, better for Marcus to move on and meet a new challenge.

There are plenty of other options he could have gone with. CHO, Rogers, Gordon, etc
Gordon is injured now. Rogers went and played, he's not exactly big competition. I couldn't think who CHO is.

He wasn’t injured when the lineup was selected  never mind
True but as I said, it's normal to test out players, especially against such weak opposition we cannot lose. He then criticized him after giving him a chance, very much like Amorim.

He was asked about the wide players and said he wanted more from them. Anyway, that’s not even the point being discussed.

I don't think he's pulling up any trees at Villa, but you can see why Tuchel believes that the in-form version of Rashford and Foden (who's also having a meh season) can work out in and England side with Kane and Bellingham. Although Saka will probably start when he comes back from injury and the other spot will be filled by either of them. It's not like England have great depth for that role, either.
This is probably true. Every ex United player gets their form overhyped when they leave. Sancho was being hyped immediately after leaving but that's quietly stopped.

If Tuchel is playing him he probably thinks he could be useful but we already know that he could be useful. The problem is that he rarely is.

I think the 3 match ban Gordon got didn’t help his case

You’d have thought that would mean that he would be well-rested and raring to go - he just had a two week break. Hardly like he was returning from a serious injury. I suspect it was just a nice easy excuse for Tuchel to let him down gently.

He's world class, it would take a lot of money to get him from you guys, teams should do what it takes! Especially Chelsea and Newcastle.

The noise around such an average footballer is crazy, it's genuinely staggering that he's starting in this England team. I thought Tuchel would have more sense tbh

He's so little threat now.

It's no surprise he's scored so few goals in the last couple of years.

He's been ok for England this week, looked lively but never looked like scoring.

I imagine he was hoping if he showed faith in Rashford and things went his way it could ignite his confidence and get him playing something like the player he once was. Long shot but I can see the temptation - he really was very good when he was good. Hopefully Tuchel decides after two starts against weak opposition failed to do the trick it's not worth going further down this road and someone else gets the next chance.

As someone not watching the game I've got no idea how he's performing

He was extremely lively, especially in the first half where he played on the left as opposed to the second where he switched sides and the team around him also kept changing. He was always in space on the left, so a ball that found him would suddenly make play more exciting as he had the chance to be direct. He ran at his man, showed quick feet, and sent players sliding the wrong way multiple times with a dummy shot/cross in/close to the box. Most of the English attacks came down the left through him this way in the first half - Bowen was anonymous on the other side. This is probably why some folks are praising him.

All that said, he never did anything after beating his man or getting into those good positions. He could not find the weight or placement for the final ball for an assist, one of attempts at goal was comically sliced wide, and he ended up hitting his man a couple of times from a standstill position. There was simply no end product to his game against not very impressive (albeit low-block) opposition. He had no defensive work to do all game, either. When Eze came on, he immediately got into a position that Rashford did and managed to score a (deflected) goal. This is probably why some folks are criticising him.

Why does he look so awkward running with the ball? He doesn't even have a quick change of direction or cut inside and have a shot anymore like he used to. Lack of combinations, doesn't give and go and run into space. He's seemingly regressed quite a bit and it's sad to see.

The way the media puts a positive spin in what he does reminds me of late-stage Rooney. Rooney however had built up far more good credit.

Will he ever score a goal again? Nothing for almost 4 months now.

“Silent domination” etc. Bit embarrassed to admit that I got sucked in by all that. With hindsight it was obvious he was a busted flush by then. Wishful thinking is a hell of a drug.

Created 6 chances against Latvia in 79 minutes.

Creating loads for Villa and currently has 4 assists in 9.

But yeah, he has no end product

Rogers is a baller, isn’t he? It’s unfortunate that Rashford’s gone on loan to a club with a bunch of other attackers who are better than him.

The fact our best paid attacker (one of the best paid in the league/Europe, I think?) is struggling to start games for Aston Villa says it all about where we’ve gone wrong since Fergie retired.

Isn't one of his assists just him not scoring a free-kick?

It’s sad that a ‘good performance’ from him nowadays is invariably one where he doesn’t actually achieve anything at all but is ‘lively’… his standards have dropped to those of a breakthrough youngster or a new signing with raw potential.
