One of the fallacies I saw on a Villa forum when they signed him was that he can play anywhere across the front three. Well... I suppose it's not really a fallacy, they can play him anywhere across the front three, in the same way they could play Emi Martinez anywhere across the front three.

Not a strange take, it's basic observation.

His people spent the whole of January courting Barcelona, Dortmund and Milan, and had to settle for Villa in the final minutes of the window because none of them were interested at even 0.5 of his wages.

Obviously if he performs well there he will have zero intention of staying. Will be holding out in the summer for another loan or bid from a bigger club. Surely you can see that?

As we’ve seen from Sancho at Chelsea, a change of scene and a point to prove than lead to a short term uptick in performances, but longer term the old mental issues return. And while I think that at times Rashford was a scapegoat for far too much, but the end of his time here he clearly wasn’t making the level of effort required. Lest we forget, he was left out for his performances in training. And if you can’t motivate yourself to put in 100% for your boyhood club and far and away the biggest club in the country, then you have some underlying issues that won’t just go away.

When he broke through he worked so hard, it was one of his calling cards. But somewhere along the way, when he was over rewarded for his promise, the motivation evaporated. I hope he succeeds there so we can get a big fee for him. His time here is undoubtedly done.

I do agree that people have a very negative perception of Rashford now and are looking to accentuate his weak points at Villa, and he was used as a scapegoat here.

I also agree Rashford was really dangerous in that Porto game for sure, and we’re desperate for a player like that right now. It is also the case he was a massive defensive liability that was exploited and that allowed them to turn the game around. It’s not irrational to think that. His own manager subbed him at half-time. You might disagree with the decision but there is an obvious rationale for it.

As is always the case, most people that bother discussing anything about footy only discuss the extremes. So invariably people start stretching the truth to argue against the opposing view.
