I am clean with my Rashford belief... Never waivered
Hah I was also certain that he was a great off the ball runner and finisher - never understood people questioning his workrate on defence when it was clear that he was being asked to stay up by multiple managers so he'd be a counter attacking threat.
So I'll try to be the devils advocate here since everyone decided that he was better than Mbappe around here.
In my book his strengths are
- Off the ball running
- Controlling that lofted aerial ball with his first touch and keeping possession / scoring as a result
- Finishing in general
- Nutmegs
There are a couple of areas where he used to be shit at and have been masked either through tactics or because he improved as a player.
- When he's back to goal or in the left half space and there's a ball pinged to his feet. The ball basically used to go back to the passer at the same velocity. On the odd occasion that he tried to control it and turn he'd lose it immediately to the CB / CM.
- Facing up to the fullback - he'd try to either nutmeg (never worked) or an occasional elastico (sometimes worked) but he's hardly a bag of tricks. Couldn't really use his pace to beat the fullback.
- When he was doubled up by the winger and the fullback, he used to attempt (and sometimes succeed with) ridiculous passes to an underlapping Shaw / Martial making a run. More often than not he'd just lose the ball.
- Generally erratic dribbling and passing when we were up against a set defence and he's off form. This still happens but he's on good form now. I think we'll see a return of this version of Rashford at some point and people will start flipping tables again.
