This.

I think we should all forgive player's rustiness and lack of sharpness for this game, they aren't 100% up to speed.

Though the only unforgiving thing was Maguire defending for the goal, that was unacceptable. Nothing to do with rust or anything, just made a poor decision to let Spurs player go inside rather than trying to cover it and push him outside.

Yeah, very poor. Maguire and De Gea should take complete blame for the goal, both very poor mistakes. Showing him to go inside when player is running at speed, no idea what Maguire was thinking.

Too busy fighting the government and ending child hunger.

He needs to decide where his priorities lie. It's all well and good little Timmy is fed but what good does that do me when we've lost ground on Chelsea?

Yes it is

You'd think Ole would have learnt from his mistakes of overpaying his players, Rashford especially as it was the reason he got injured in the first place.

Subs before 60 mins would probably be beneficial in two ways, firstly giving overworked players a rest (Rash) and changing things when they're clearly not working (Fred/McT for 60 mins).

Just screams of having no imagination.

Not to mention that goal put us under unnecessary pressure. Prior to that stupid goal we were controlling the game(albeit not creating much) while Spurs never looked like a threat at all. Somehow that goal shook everyone and Scot completely collapsed in midfield.

Sarcasm detectors are looking a little faulty

Yeah, we struggled after the goal and then played well in the second half. Story of our season too, stupid mistakes which changes the game completely.

Yep I've seen it happen one time too many this season. Start a game against a team where we look in cruise control(while barely creating or just the bare minimum) then a stupid mistake from our defense and DeGea and the game completely change. We panic and can't get a grip anymore.

I think the panic comes from the fact that we feel we can't create much, and if we're behind we lose our minds. Hopefully now with both Pogba and Bruno creative players in midfield, it'll ease the pressure off on the team and feel confident that we'll still create and score even if we're behind rather than completely losing the plot for a while.

Thought he was our most dangerous attacker in the first half, then faded in the second. Lets not ignore the last ditch defending from Spurs several times that prevented him from going clear through

He looked rusty. overall I think he was kinda poor with some sloppy touches and passes but excusable just due to rust I guess.

I was 'glad' he decided not to take pot shots really because most of the times, it would have been forced and in a bad position. The problem today apart from being rusty was the lack of centre forward play..

Rashford had no one to play off because Martial wasn't close enough. Ighalo came on, did simple things and laid off easy chances/passes to everyone.

I am not talking about pot shots, and he has stopped taking those types of shots some time ago. So bringing something that he has barely done this season is just stupid.

I was talking about when he was around close to the goal. Had a few chances where space opened up, and decided to pass it rather than pull the trigger.

Should never have lasted the full 90 considering he's been out for 5 months. Never looked in control of the ball today to be expected. Ole should have taken him off in place of Ighalo and moved Martial out wide.
Agree.

Besides the fact he was rusty and not playing very well, he was quite clearly knackered towards the end too.

I'm sure he'll improve with more matches, but he seemed very shy of shooting today. Earlier in the season he was unleashing so many dangerous shots from that inside left area.

Not to say he was bad, just not as dangerous as I thought he'd be.

Alright don't get overly defensive over it. It wasn't a criticism at Rashford.

I'm a fan of him being confident and being assertive, I'm not when it's to the detriment to our overall play. Good example is the few wild long shots from Bruno tonight.

Clearly today he wasn't 100% confident/sharp and the chances that did open up didn't seem like good instances hence my comment. It would have been forced.

Just looked rusty. As did Kane for Spurs. Makes Pogba's performance even more impressive. Nothing to worry about though it was his first game back.

Think Mourinho put a lot of focus of shutting down Martial and Rashford. Sissoko seemed glued to Rashford (and he's gigantic), while Dier was constantly chopping at Martial. But more sharpness from Rashford and he could've had a couple though. Even that ball from Pogba could've been a better touch and he would've been in. Anyway, great to have him back.

Looked rusty, but will come good.

I thought it was a good touch but as he was his heels a little and too far from goal, it would have been impossible to take it into stride, get ahead of the covering defender AND be in position to take a shot. I'm sure some will post replays of Messi's goal against Nigeria (?) but that was a different scenario.

Basically, it's easy to say in hightsight but perhaps he could taken a touch to kill the ball and then either drive towards goal (to get the defender to hesistate) or check his run and play it across; I think Bruno was on the edge of the penalty box.

Edit: Actuallllllly, yeah you're right haha. It was a slightly loose touch and wrong foot/angle to take it into stride:

His heads not in it anymore

He holds on to the ball far too long and then the moment is gone. This has been his one of his weakness always.

Too indecisive. When cutting in, he would be unsure as to whether shoot or carry on dribbling and in the end he made a mess of it. The Fernandes penalty claim was the best example of this, he was in the box attacking Aurier, dropped his shoulder and had to chance to shoot, or chop back on to his left foot and in the end, was unsure of what to do and ruined the chance. The touch from Pogba's ball needs to be locked into his body as well or taking away from the goal if taking a heavy touch.

I think the key thing for us is that one of Rashford or Martial needs to step up to the next level very soon.

We cannot have 2 "not quite but nearly there" players starting in a United front 3.

Shouldn't judge him too much off this one game though.

Think hes going to be scoring loads with Bruno's early passes and Pogbas vision as well. That one pass near the end that Bruno hit first time is a perfect example. Good off the ball run that wouldn't ever be seen before, now Bruno instantly plays a good ball which is cut out at the last second. It's going to be lovely to watch.

Got in good positions, but wasnt sharp enough to capitalize. Will be back to his best soon enough. Playing in front of Bruno and Pogba, he's gonna get loads of chances, and we need him to be clinical.

Yep, people will correctly say he is rusty but this has always been a weakness of his game

He gets a pass for the next couple of games, and let's be honest he was crap. His biggest development step for me is to iron out his peaks and troughs. In form he's borderline world class but he still lacks consistency, i hope this isn't the Rashford we're going to get for the next 8 games.

He's been getting more and more of these types of passes so it's obviously something being worked on. I think he needs to learn to time it a little better, he always gets into position too early (bringing the defender with him) and then has to slow down to let the ball drop. If he delayed his runs a little he could receive it at full pace and not give the defender time to catch up.
