Of course it was a mistake. There's no denial about that.

I'm just laughing at your hypothetical theory that Ibra or Rooney wouldn't have let it happened.

I wouldn't expect any United player to let it happen, you can laugh all you like but players learn from things like this and like Ibra, Rooney, Sanchez, Ozil... next time Martial will just bump him over.

So tell me his strengths?

I'm not judging it on 60 minutes. You making out he's never played on the wing in his life. That's where he played for the youth team ffs.

I imagine the reaction would be different if a foreign player was performing like this.

If you need me to tell you his strengths then I suggest you take up tiddlywinks instead.

As for his position, he's a striker. Like, it's unbelievably obvious. Just because he played some youth football out wide aged 14, when he was 5 ft 2 and playing against Daz from Blackburn who got released and now works in a Wetherspoon, does not mean to say he should be starting there regularly for the United first team.

Except Martial spent a lot of time at #9 with Depay on the wing. Sometimes it was Rooney at 9, Depay on the wings. Martial was only sent wide because of Rashford's emergence.

Rashford scored 12 goals in his first 25 apps, I'd take that kind of clumsy player all day.

Martial only played number 9 when he first arrived. He was sent wide long before Rashford.

Remember Depay humiliated the player in the Europa League, there are only so many players capable of that, he is a special talent

Thought he did well today. Can't blame him too much for their goal, though obviously you would expect your wide player to shut that down a bit more then what he did. But overall he was a big part in our play I thought. Looked dangerous throughout.

- Bad and lazy defending by Rashford

- He's still a potential world class player in the future

- The real problem here is that he really shouldn't be in that situation in the first place, why'd we sit back so soon with just a one goal lead?

Alright folks, I'm done here. Y'all have a good afternoon/night :)

He played out wide last season for the youth team for crying out loud. But do carry on trying to be funny.

He's suffering from the same problem that Herrera had last season.

Last season, LvG put the entire burden of creativity and tempo on the midfield. That led to Herrera over-playing and giving the ball away a lot. This season, he has Pogba alongside him and that calms him down because he doesn't feel like he needs to do it all on his own. It's added a bit of assurance to his passing.

This season, Mourinho has asked a lot of his front 3. Rashford tries to do it all himself, in contrast to the simple one-touch play he was showing last season. Another player in there to help him will make all the difference. Martial is too similar whilst Zlatan and Rooney are too slow. Mkhitaryan would be ideal if he could man up.

We often played a combo of Martial/Rooney/Depay in the front four during that time - Tony mostly #9. Remember LVG's 4231 experiment after the 433 worked so well for him in 14-15?

Bolded part is just... wow, lad. Just lie down for a bit, take a nap, enjoy some IRL friendships. That's just awful.

Well there's what you expect and then there's the reality of players making mistakes. Particularly when centre forwards are asked to perform like a fullback.

Agree with the first part but the bolded is nonsense when the lad is a much a wide forward as a striker and spent more of his youth career there.

Wide forwards often end up in those positions and should do better.

Simple pure fact and he wouldn't even deny it himself I'm sure.

Looked like he's lacking his usual energy when playing up front today, noticed the same when he came on for England against Spain. Might be time for Mourinho to give him a breather after the remarkable 9 months or so he has had. Ferguson probably would.

Long overdue being dropped now, I personally don't think he should have come into the XI off the back of that winner against Hull in the first place, use him as an impact sub or as Zlatan's replacement

I wouldn't blame a centre half for missing goalscoring chances because that's not their job. Players have positions for a reason.

Equally I don't blame a centre forward, even if it is a mistake, for not defending properly in the left back position.

Just because he made a big mistake today doesn't mean that he's not a big talent. Everything isn't black or white, he made a big mistake today which cost us 2 points but that doesn't mean he's not going to become a great player. Everyone makes mistakes, especially young football players, the important thing is how they react to those mistakes and hopefully Rashford will learn something from today and he can move on as a better player.

Saw all those nonsense blaming Rashford for the cross resilting in goal. He was playing brilliantly up front, creating problem after problem for them, interchanging well with the othe 2, why shift him to the left? Why expect him to defense like a left back when he is a proper forward?

He is a huge talent but he has been in hot form ever since he emerged. This has been broken ever since he played as a winger to shoehorn Ibrahimovic in. As Ian Wright said play the lad as a striker because he js a striker.

This is spot on and i think the root of our problems, our striker and "wingers" looks isolated way to often and we often become very predictable in attack. Unless our no 10 join is, we usually get outnumbered and shut down pretty easily. Either that or we get it out wide and we get a shite delivery from one of Shaw/Valenica/Rashford/Martial/Lingaard.

Regarding Rashford, i think hes been poor this season, but hes been played in positions that don't suit him (winger/wide AMF/lone striker).I really hope Jose could sacrifice a holding mid one of these days and play two strikers instead. Play Ibra as a SS and one of the rapid youngsters in front of him and i think we could cause a lot of trouble.

Ibra might be known for his goal scoring, but as we have seen this season, his hold up and link up play is where he really shines

Good player, huge talent with tonnes of potential but not ready to be United's leading striker week in week out yet.

As this point Ibra is still by far the better striker. Rashford could do very well in a 2 though.

A two striker system seems the best way to get the most out of Rashford but that would leave no room for Mata and he's been our best attacking player this season. We also lack quality wide players for such a system.

Why not? He hardly had a bad game for us when he continued to play as a striker & if he isn't ready to play as a striker why do we even let him play as mediocre winger - which he was in the reserves?

If he isn't good enough to the lead the line in his best position - he isn't good enough to be used in a position he is rubbish in.

Well there's the problem @TheSweeper, we're so poor on the wings that Marcus is often our best option. He's a back-up striker to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and he still gets plenty of games, it's all good for his progress.

41212 with Mata as the #10, Herrera and Pogba at CM and Carrick as DM.

We don't have any "wide players" at all really except maybe Young

We do not need to have wingers - in fact we have a lot of players who can play as wide Attacking midfielders - Mkitarayan-mata-lingard-and even Rooney has been utilized like this.

We are playing such wide football to try and dominate teams physically whilst we do not put emphasis on trying to play through the middle and utilize technique.

The wide areas we use also helps Jose with parking the bus that other formations can't do.

hope he is rested on thursday, we need to remember he is still a kid.

Something that a lot of fans seem to forgetting it seems. This is his first full season too, easy to forget because of good he was last season

He needs to start stretching the defence again like last season. He was very static today, and his strength is running at defenders. I wanted to see him make more runs in behind the defence.

What I would give for a Giggs, Sanchez, Robben or even Beckham.

IMHO he looks jaded mentally. Hardly surprising given how quickly it has all happened for him.

I didn't see the match but I wouldn't be surprised. There were some who thought we didn't need a striker as we have Rashford.. Problem is, he's still a kid. If he drops in form, its natural. We won't be able to fully rely on him for a number of seasons yet.

He was used as Ibra's replacement?

Lad had a good game, a tad isolated at time. But looked dangerous. Yep dropped a bollock for the equaliser. But young and learning. Great player and no idea why he's getting shit on here. Some people really need a reality check, turning on players if they make an error of judgement.

I don't personally think he had a bad game, guys last time he played as a lone striker sometime last year, and today he didn't finished the game as a striker. Ibra head worse games there. I think he was actually surprisingly good from the wing though, if he can switch places with Martial during the game I don't mind starting him as a striker, he showed how good movement he has when up front earlier in his senior"career"

He was beaten for the goal but how come he was defending it in a first place, where was Blind?

Overall he had a decent game imo.

Well...he has to learn defensive duties no doubt. If you can score as a full back, you can defend as an attacker....it was the same with England this week, his half arsed movement towards the guy with the ball facilitated the attack that lead to the goal. But....he's young...and no doubt Jose will be pissed off with him for his lack of aggression defensively because in those situations it's not about positions..but player against player and you have to have the same aggression to win the ball or at least prevent the other player using the ball.....

Anyone who thinks he should lead the line, or be permanently in the team is living in cloud cuckoo land...name me one 19 year old who is in the team every week for the teams in the top five?

(I'm sure I'll be put right :))

If he was THAT good he would be in the side every game (Rooney was), the problem is he isn't a top striker and it's something we need desperately.

His part in goal was shambolic, got left for dead by Ox and regardless of his age, should do a lot better in such a situation especially with what was at stake.
