Marcelo

Brehme

People are forgetting Maicon too, on the right. At his peak was just unplayable. RB, Winger, CM and shadow striker all rolled into one. Probably the best RB i've ever seen, better than Cafu and Dani Alves and Lahm

Alex Sandro reminds me a lot of him, but he's not nearly as good yet

Good shout on Maicon. If Dani Alves is so beloved, people forget that Maicon during 2005-2010 kept prime Alves out of the national team. I put him only next to Cafu in those 5 years.

Im willing to bet Mitchell is likely to be Shaw's long term competition under Mourinho if his loan spell at hearts goes well.
hopefully you're right mate, not sure if Mourinho counts with Mitchell, the chance he got under Mourinho at last game of the season he took, but never appeared again which is strange. So hopefully the hearts coach will teach him a little bit of defending too so mitchell will be taken seriously, he wasted a lot of time the first half of the season. WOuld absolutely liek the guy from Old Trafford to make it, finally an attacking leftback

Actually it should have been expected. United currently have Valencia, Darmian, Bailly, Rojo, Smalling, Jones, Lindeloff, Blind, Shaw and Young fighting for a starting spot in defence. Thats 9 established internationals, 4 of which can play left back as a first or second position. Like Fosu Mensah and Tuanzebe a good loan was his only option to impress till Jose culls numbers from like next summer.

Great going forward but very poor defensively.

Not among the absolute best LBs I've seen.

Let's remember that Mourinho bought Coentrão to bench Marcelo.
Holy ... yh. :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Yeah, lets not let the facts hit on the face.

2010-11:
CL - 11. starts
La Liga: 31 starts
4th most mins in the squad. Only Alonso, Ronaldo, Casillas played more

2011-12:
La Liga: 31 starts
CL: 5 starts
7th most mins in squad

2012-13:
CL: 4 starts (missed 6 because of injury)
La Liga: 13 starts, missed 15 games because of injury.

More to rotate them, and also he thought coentrao could do a job in midfield in games were he wanted to park the bus

Coentrao actually did take Marcelo's spot as the starter in 13/14. Marcelo got injured, Coentrao did well enough to keep him out even after he came back. Then Coentrao picked up a serious injury early following season

Mourinho also packaged De Bruyne and Salah out of Chelski..
Come on, lets just admit his talent evaluation has been a bit off since 2010 or so.

Coentrao played really well for Madrid. Very solid and surprisingly good at attack.

Mourinho wanted to have a more defensive option, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Coentrão gets underrated because he turned to shit after the injuries, he's actually been consistently playing well for us this season and he'll be going to the World Cup.

Transfermarkt stats so take a few assists off but these stats are ridiculous...

I think Ashley Cole in his prime (Arsenal years and early Chelsea years) was the greatest but Marcelo is better than R.Carlos and Cafu for me.

Yeah, Maicon was really a incredible one. I think the two matches against Bale in 2010 destroyed his confidence, was never the same after that, but had he been around in the 90's and early 2000's I reckon Cafu would be benched.

People overrate that Bale thing so much. It was group stage and he was alredy in that alcohol decline. Anywhere in tge world Maicon gets his dues, when you mention him in UK its “Zomg Bale grup StaGe”

Mourinho played Couentrao in top CL games so much, benching Marcelo. Also in some Clasicos. And Coentrao played very very good.

But but Salah is going to have a field day!!

Marcelo is just as likely to have a fecking field day with the whole right side of the Liverpool team. Then you've got Ronaldo to worry about.

I bloody hope so man!

Firstly, if us and Real get through...

Marcelo and Ronaldo are going to make our right side hell. Milner or Wijnaldum will really have to help TAA out. Then Ronaldo can busy his lungs to track back and stop Salah's runs when we play our trade mark long ball game. :)

Casemiro will help Marcelo out on the left. Definitely not Ronaldo. :)

Not sure why him having a killer first touch makes the suggestion that Salah will cause him trouble so worthy of ridicule?

Because left back like Marcelo will have your right hand side pinned down. Salah will be too busy defending in his own half.

Like Kimmich was tonight?

You're giving me one example. I can give you countless examples where Marcelo tore teams to shreds far better, and more dangerous than Liverpool.

If TAA isn't being helped for the full 90 mins then Real are going to have a fecking field day with Liverpool's right hand side. And even if TAA is being helped, Real will still probably dominate them. Real Madrid are head and Shoulders above Liverpool.

Vintage Marcelo tonight. At fault for first goal by sauntering back up the park, then scores a beauty at the other end.

One example was all that was needed.

Marcelo is far more important to Madrid offensively than he is defensively. Do you think Zidane gave him a bollocking tonight? This is Marcelo for you. He plays his own game, and plays it extremely well, against better opposition than Liverpool. So I don't understand the whole thing with him struggling with Salah. Yeah he will give space to run into but Ramos and Casemiro will fill in while he's wandering around the field. Usually, that's what happens with attacking full-backs.

I've just said in my earlier post that I didn't understand why people go on about Salah taking Marcelo to the cleaners, when -- its just as likely that Marcelo will take whole Liverpool's right hand side to the cleaners.

Couldn't believe Casemiro playing musical statues while Kimmich ran through. If he's Marcelo's protection then Real will be better with Ronaldo tracking* back.

*Lightly jogging while checking the big screen in case he's in camera shot again so his hair is as immaculate as it should be.

You're right that Marcelo will of course cause Liverpool problems too. It just seemed like you were ridiculing the idea that Salah will do it to him.

Do people expect Marcelo to be in two places at the same time? Ronaldo is always in the box, you need a winger style LB.

It’s funny, when he bombs forward and isn’t back in time he’s slated, but Ronaldo not helping his flank, not creating through the wing etc is never pointed out. When Marcelo is in the formed back line he’s actually decent as a defender.

Put it like this : RM loses much more if Marcelo is not bombing forward than if they gain 15% more solidity in the back playing a defensive type player.

I think Madrid will try to have a lot of possession. They'll try to control the midfield through Modric and Kroos. Marcelo will be playing as left midfielder more or less and either, the three of; Ramos, Varane and Carvajal will shift to the left, when Madrid are attacking, to give Marcelo more freedom to go forward, or Ramos and Varane will both cover each flank and let Casemiro drop deep when needed. Either way, I expect Madrid to play high up the pitch with high defensive line, even though Liverpool have lot's of pace up front and if Modric and Kroos can control that midfield then it will be a perfectly reasonable tactic. If you seen the game on Tuesday, it doesn't suit Liverpool to be on the back foot, and that they're much better when the impetuous is on them to attack. For first 20 minutes Roma did very well and could have hurt Liverpool but instead they fell away. I really don't expect Real Madrid to tail off like that so I think it will be a very tough night for Liverpool.

This is exactly the point. It can be applied to "ball playing" defenders as well. Fans fixate on the goals they cost because they are obvious mistakes. They are the type of mistakes that are generally hard to take especially for people who grew up on traditional defenders and full backs. Managers however are not idiots, they understand that for every silly goal the style of those players cost, the gain on the other end more than makes up for it, even if it is in a less obvious way.

Some of it is because he plays far up the field but a lot of it isn't. Douglas Costa played with him a few weeks ago and it had nothing to do with Marcelo playing far up the pitch for example. He's usually pretty lazy when getting back, he'd be the perfect fullback if that wasn't the case.
