Marcel Sabitzer | Signs for United

I can not see a point in signing him. Eriksen will be back in 3-4 months anyway, and then what? The only way this make any sense is if United already know they want to sell Fred, Donny or McT. But even here it seems like a panic buy. Is this really the midfielder we want to bet on for more than 3-4 months?
You make it sound like 3-4months is no time, especially at the business end of the season. Fact is we're losing a key player at the most crucial time of the season, and his injury risks derailing our season and all the progress we've made.

Sabitzer is a loan signing. Its a zero risk move, and if it doesn't work he'll be back in Munich in the summer.

Its deadline day and we're broke. We're not bringing in a De Jong or Fernandez, this is the best kind of signing for us, especially if we don't want to be starting McTominay.

The point is in your sentence. Eriksen is basically out for the season. Sabitzer is on loan til the end of the season.

Yes it is a panic loan. Because our starter got injured so now we need to replace him urgently. Fred is good, but when someone is out for the season it does feck you over so a loan is normal to cover.

Has Merson ever had a correct take on United? Most blinkered, bitter ABU going. Bet he hasn't uttered a word of criticism over Chelsea's spending.

Please actually read and learn what’s going on before posting

Is it crazy to think he might even be a slight upgrade on Eriksen? Of course Eriksen has done a good job for us and has very good passing, but he also has some very notable flaws defensively and in terms of energy. Sabitzer seems more well rounded.

Against bigger teams that's fair if he slots in and adjusts quickly to the league but against lesser teams Eriksen is much better at unlocking defenses and creating chances.

BBC reporting now. What a fantastic signing this would be IMO - this guy is class!

you do realize that Donny is out for the season with a knee injury AND it's a loan move not a purchase? Can't make it thru the rest of the season with just 4 CM's. It just isn't feasible

we’ve lost two midfield players DVB who was finally starting to show something and Ericssen who is our main playmaker. The squad is threadbare and we are desperate this is about as good as we could hope for.

At this point, I just know you're taking the piss

An Austrian playing for United would make me all giddy. Would be a decent option for the squad too. Was impressed by him at Leipzig and lately for Austria. Shame it never worked out at Bayern but he's simply not good enough to break into that midfield.
Would he be the first Austrian playing for United? Can't think of any since the 90s at least, but that doesn't necessarily mean much. :)
Absolutely nothing wrong with this move.

The fact we've known Eriksen can't walk since Saturday now we're scrambling around desperately on the last day is typical United though.
Given how quickly this is coming together today, quite a bit of work must have happened before today already, first to identify possible targets, and then to have initial discussions to prioritize them, find out who's actually available, and identify Sabitzer as the one to bring in. (Most likely others have been approached as well but weren't available.)

I might be wrong, but my impression is that transfer gossip in the media while the window is open tends to give a fairly poor image of what clubs are actually doing - both in terms of flagging interest that isn't there and missing out on a lot of the work and discussions that actually happen.

Hard to say. The benefit Eriksen has is he's proven a good fit for our team, and dare I say it - he's been rather crucial to our progress as a team. Sabitzer is an unknown quantity - never played English football for starters.

Ideally we'd probably look to upgrade on both this summer if we want to compete for the title though.

Eriksen seems vulnerable to the press at times, Sabitzer is at least a natural in that position.

Don't think so. Hopefully his superior work rate will compensate for inferior passing and will be able replacement for Eriksen. And then become part of midfield rotation after we bid goodbye to McT in summer.

Neither had Casemiro. And he's been easily better than Eriksen.

I think he's a great fit, the only panic here is rushing to get the deal done. He's a good presser and can run for ages, definitely not a guy that needs to be subbed off after 60mins due to fatigue. I like this move and I'm really hoping it goes through. Probably a loan deal but I would love to see a reasonable buy clause included. If ETH can get the Leipzig version out of him again that would be a good deal.

He's not better than Eriksen. He's roughly on a similar level to Fred. Similar style to guys like Gallagher and Mount. Better than Gallagher. Worse than Mount. Good presser, good shooter, will score some goals for us, decent technique, not much of a playmaker but can link up fine. Attacking box to box mid.

He's got some qualities Eriksen lacks, but lacks qualities Eriksen offers. He's definitely a better option than Fred/McTominay but we'll still lack creativity from midfield until Eriksen returns. But as far as a deadline day signings go given our situation this would be nothing short of brilliant.

Would assume Bayern want guaranteed money and we don’t want to commit to buying an injury replacement. Stick an obligation on him and if he’s shit we still have to shell out in the summer.
What I meant was for targeted players that we want to bring in and not short term loans. We have no money to spend so rather than doing loan deals for Weghorst and possibly Sabitzer we get in or attempt to get in summer targets early, maybe we have tried already and failed.
I just see a few other teams doing this same model and bringing in players on loan intially to make permanent in the summer, spurs with Pedro Porro
