He was superb today. I wouldn’t have took him off either.
Ruben mentioned in one of his press conferences that he is one of the players who takes longer to recover after a game. I rather have him start the next three than have him tired in order to find a win yesterday.

He's so good. We need two more like him and then our midfield group will finally be fit for purpose.

Caught the eye yesterday, seemed to be winning the ball back every few minutes. Plenty of tidy touches and was shifting the ball well etc. Not sure if that's backed up by stats or not, but looked excellent.

You forget he's only 23 so he should grow with this team
.
Yeah can’t believe the amount of criticism he had on here the first 2-3 games. He will be here for a few years yet and so much to grow. I’m sure the manager has so much influence on what he’s producing now. Long may it continue

We need more like him and for the first time post Fergie I trust the club to find them. We are going to be fine in that regard. I couldn’t give a shit about the result last night. More learning for the manager. Let’s hope we regroup and grab 3 points at the weekend and start climbing the table a bit. Currently Ugarte is essential to everything we want to achieve.

I don’t really understand this sort of faint praise. He’s been an absolute monster. Why can’t everyone see this? The media are the same. Barely getting any acknowledgment for crazy good performances.
Agreed.

He's been outstanding recently.

Did we finally buy a midfielder of the right quality, the right age, and at a reasonable price?
Looks like it. He's really tenacious, very quick (looked slow at first, but he's quick), an amazing engine, great tackler, good awareness, and even his downplayed footballing abilities seem to be rather darn good. He's not an expansive passer like Scholes, but he does all the right things, plays it simple, but can dribble when called upon and also has a decent long range pass in him when required. He's really growing on me - great player

From me anyway, it is because I have seen too often now at United when a player comes in and looks the business for the first months, even first season, only for it to fall apart thereafter. I'm sick of the boom/bust cycle, so I am trying to taper my views a bit on players before seeing how they are in the long term.

I like what I have seen from Ugarte so far, and hope he can build on it and be a mainstay in the midfield for years.

Like how quietly he goes with his business. Usually a player that is so agressive in his ball winning ability is also acting a bit nuts. On the other hand, Ugarte is pretty calm and composed while he does his bit all over the pitch. Which actually makes him even more intimidating.

Great buying so far

I agree with this and I have been super critical with his early performances but he's been absolutely immense since Amorim joined.

It's a bit strange on here at the moment. Even in the Amorim thread some seem incapable of seeing the huge progress we are making which I can't for the life of me understand

I was sure of it despite all the Nunes progressive passing and heavy feet expensive backup malarkey.

Rather than argue I just sat back and let him do the talking. Loving it.

There was a post in that thread pointing out all the issues under Amorim and how we have not made any progress. The same poster was banging on about giving Eth more time. You cannot make this up

Ugarte had a tough start, which is not really surprising considering he joined very late and was new to the league. Coming in to a dysfunctional team compounded it further. Eth’s horrendous tactics made it worse as it somehow got the worst out of everyone.

Now that he is getting the rhythm and pace of the league, along with having a manager who knows how to set us up properly and difficult to play through, with players now actually fighting for each other on the pitch, he is naturally showing his true potential.

He has been a monster in mopping up opponent attacks. However what really has come to the fore is his ability in tight areas and also his quick sharp passing.

Love him already, seems like one of those type of players who gives you consistent 7/10 performances.

Missed the game as it was very late here.

But watching the clip here, he is a menace, a hound that just attacks the ball, and his ability on the ball is nothing to sneeze at, matter of fact, it's very good, he is comfortable and happy here.

Hope he keeps growing from strength to strength.

I think the main plus of him (outside the abundantly obvious in being best in class when it comes to tackles and interceptions) is that he’s pretty good at taking players on in midfield. At times he transforms from simple endless energy destroyer to quite an assured dribbler in tight spaces.

Could be a little bit more progressive on the ball (and I think he is starting to) but we know it’s not his main remit.

I'm glad he's kicked on and is having a run of games where he's showing his quality from his Sporting days, and also whenever in an Uruguayan shirt. The irony is that he just needs someone like Joao Neves as a midfield partner now.

He'd be a world class DM if he can improve his passing and positivity on the ball but this is competent enough considering the dross we've had to tolerate for years.

I don’t think every game needs an Ugarte. I definitely believe a winning squad needs a player like him. Good value signing. Great profile and room to improve.

Mainoo and him together will work great, given time, I reckon.

makes sense that ten hag didn’t fancy him.

Didn't he say it would take him a few months to get going?...seems pretty accurate to me.

It's been a few months and now he's comfortable and settled we are seeing what he is capable of.

i read in a few places that ten hag didn’t fancy signing him in the first place. and as that fits my agenda in him, i’m inclined to believe it.

He didn't say, we didn't make any progress . He just said we were bit fortunate to win against City. Huge difference!

Still untrue. Don't see how it was fortunate. If anything we have been rather unlucky under Amorim. Our stats are better than the results show. The opposite of how many games under EtH went.

I know. I got a warning for pointing his delusion out. Anyway I don't want to further derail this thread. Ugarte has been massive for us since Amorim joined. Absolute baller

The Ugarte faint praise is so strange. Loads of “starting to look good…” or “would be world class if…” and “just needs to…”

His performances have been ridiculously good in basically every single game apart from a settling in period of maybe two or three games (at most) And not just good compared to the shitty standards of many of his team mates. Objectively excellent compared to every other player in his position at every other club. His stats are amazing. You’d have to go back to Bruno for a player who’s looked this good this early in his United career. Yet you’d swear the jury is still out reading loads of the comments about him.

Brilliant - he's finding his feet and will be a fixture in our team for years to come. I love him.
We need a god back up for him.He will pick up yellow cards and also can't play all the time. Casemiro is not the answer. Maybe someone from the youth team

Monster

What is encouraging is that, whatever you might think about INEOS currently and how they have handled certain 'issues', their first summer window has proven to be the best window since....about 2005.

Ugarte looks top class and is only 23. De Ligt and Mazraoui were absolute steals for a combined £50m. Yoro looks to have elite-level potential and, whilst the jury is still out on Zirkzee, he's shown he has some useful attributes and given his age, profile and reputation in Italy, we wouldn't struggle for a buyer if it doesn't work out.

Amazing how, you know, putting recruitment in the hands of people who know about football, watch football and work in football is a better strategy than, say, letting an investment banker choose signings based on their commercial appeal.

Bodes well for future windows. Even if we can bring in one or two players who improve the XI each Summer, we should be a genuinely good side by about 2027 - especially given the age profile of our starting XI now...many of them should be peaking or at their peak then.

Considering our success rate with signings for the past decade I'd imagine that it's pretty sensible to be a bit cautious before anointing someone the new Roy Keane.

Previous signings have no bearing on what Ugarte has produced so far this season. Plus could never have a good game again and it wouldn’t make his performances to date any less excellent.
