Was a monster today, nice to see some of our players actually stepping up and digging in for a derby game. Loved his aggression.

fantastic today. Weird what happens with a proper DM in the team. Will only get better as he adjusts to England.

Probably his best performance in a United shirt. Thought he was solid. Seemed to always be in the right place at the right time. A firing Mainoo next to him and we could see a really good partnership formed.

With Casemiro potentially departing in the summer, it’s crucial to secure a reliable backup for him to maintain balance in the midfield. Ederson has been linked as a versatile option who can not only cover for Ugarte but also partner alongside him when needed, offering flexibility and defensive solidity. Additionally, bringing in a player like Gomes to replace Eriksen could inject creativity and energy into the midfield.

Should start as often as possible. Ugarte +1.
Every combination with him there should work.

Back in 2020, before he even moved to Europe, I recommend him on here after seeing him play for Uruguays youth team. I don't think anyone mentioned him before. Happy to see him coming good here.

Thing is, he's actually turned into a different style of midfielder. In the youth team, I likened him to de jong on here as he was more of a controller who could resist pressing opposition. Since he moved to Sporting, he became more of an all action type that covers every blade of grass. I'm still surprised by this.
I think he's showing glimpses of that technical quality. Still only 23 as well, plenty of room for further development.

He's turning out to be everything I hoped he would be when we were first linked with him. I love how front-footed and tenacious he is. Sometimes he'll intercept a pass that he has no right to win.

Absolutely. The signings brought in this summer have given us some semblance of a first eleven but a) we need depth to challenge meaningfully anyways, and b) we're very vulnerable in a few positions to injury.

I don't know a thing about Ederson beyond the name, but the profile sounds right. I honestly think we're 3 CMs away from where we need to be with this system. Assuming you mean Angel Gomes, I'd be open to that but I do want to avoid becoming a side with an overall height deficiency.

Signing Gomes on a free is just way too obvious a move for us to make.

Brilliant display today. He's looking like a player who has to start every game, glad the captain thought so to. Good to see.

In fairness, they got a better fit for the money we paid so it worked out for everyone
I'm not complaining but it just seems odd. He's one of the best ball winners in Europe, all the best teams have great ball winners.

Not sure they did get a better fit. In many of their CL games I’ve seen this season they have really missed someone with a bit of grit in the middle of the park

Very good today. Another player Ten Hag didn't have a scooby about

They saw from the Champions League games last season Ugarte wasn't very good for them. Maybe a bit of scapegoating but he definitely didn't do well and lost the trust of the club

He’s only 23, wtf? One year older than Amad. Wild

A hard working, press resistant 3 lunged box to box midfielder to partner him would instantly lift our midfield. No idea where we find such a hybrid though.

I think Amorim has maybe 2 or 3 nailed on starters at the moment, and he's one of them.

Loved that bit where a high ball was dropping down on top of him in a crowded area of the pitch. With all the talk before he arrived of him being some sort of one dimensional clogger (looking at you, Carl Anka) you would fully expect him to Brexit the ball back up in the air. But oh no, kills it dead and instantly backheels it to a player in space. Sort of thing Berbatov would do. The dude has hidden depths.

Very impressed with him today. Certainly better in possession in recent weeks than I had thought from his early appearances. Hope he keeps up the trajectory. Gives us some needed legs in midfield. Another one that needed a proper coach and functioning environment to play in?

I do remember that. You tagged me, but I hadn't been following that youth team (not as good a vintage as the one before).

There's been a lot of talk about his ball winning and stamina but what stands out to me is how intelligent he is. I don't know how to explain it but it's just apparent in the way he moves around midfield. Get him the right partner and we can finally have something decent in the middle.
I know what you mean. The best way I could explain it on here, when people kept doubting him, was that he quite simply stopped rivals making anything happen through the middle.

A few times I felt he wasn't having a remarkable game for the NT, then he would be subbed off and suddenly a lot of things that hadn't been happening did, the oppo became dominant and camped on our half. Lot of focus on tackles, duels, etc but it's what he does but isn't so clearly visible that makes him really special.

The right player for the right manager and the right manager for the right player. I bet Ugarte was delighted when he heard Rubin was coming to United.

Agree completely. He’s far better on the ball than given credit for but it’s in his own way. He’s never going to be the player to set the tempo of a match and looks like he gets a nose bleed when shooting, but his overall passing and press resistance is actually top tier. He’s very good at getting out of tight situations. Obviously the main reason he is here is his ball winning and reading of the game and from what I’ve seen he already excels in those areas.

I think betting everything on Enrique's dogmatic possession football will be a mistake for them.

I like that opposition players don't expect him to play an incisive ball so they don't close him down as much in the attacking third. He's probably played our two most incisive passes against set defenses in the past two games (the one to Garnacho against Forest and the one to Amad today although Amad was off).

I think he’s now our most important midfielder

Not at the same level just yet, but he really reminds me of Darren Fletcher circa 08-11

Quality today again. Funny that some people wrote him off in his first few appearances for ETH.
